TRACK & FIELD ROUNDUP: Strong showings at season opening meets
Western track and field athletes are prepped for a new competitive season, and this weekend the Mustangs showed why they are reigning CIS medalists.
The Western Mustangs track and field team opened its season yesterday with the 38th Annual Season’s Opener meet at Thompson Arena. Over 30 Western athletes raced in competitive heats, which included athletes from Saugeen Track and Field Club, Western Espoirs, London Western Track, and Michigan Accelerator club teams. Four meet records were set amongst 38 events – three scores posted by Mustang athletes.
Fourth-year kinesiology student Sarah Clancy dashed to the 200m finish in 25.80 seconds, outdoing her teammate Brenna Thomson’s prior arena record. Clancy also gained nearly a half-second lead over fifth-year veteran Cassandra McCaig.
Last year’s CIS silver medalist Caroline Ehrhardt continued her triple jump prowess yesterday, beating her own previous record at the Season’s Opener Meet by 45 centimetres. The fourth-year health sciences student jumped 12.37 metres this time, nearly two metres more than second place Emily Goad from Western Espoirs.
On the men’s side, Mustang Taylor Stewart captured the third Mustang meet record in the long jump event (previously set in 2009) with a 7.32 metre leap. Tim Hendry of London-Western Track and student of the University of Guelph rounded out the record setters and threw 17.32 metres in the 16lb shotput event – over a metre more than teammate Brent Roubus in second place.
The Western women’s sprint group displayed some impressive early season performances. Thomson posted a respectable 39.98 time in the 300 metre dash, while Rachael Muma, Jennifer Pitman, Janessa Olson and Lauren Thomas teamed up for a 1:46.72 time in the 4x200m relay. Thomson, McCaig, Clancy, and Lauren Clancy also followed up in the 4x400m relay with a 3:58.12 time, strong enough for a first place finish.
North Carolina transfer student Cassandra Pascal made her debut as a Mustang in the 60m sprint and posted a 7.93 second time, edging former Mustang and CIS champion Alicia Smith who now represents London Western Track. On the field, another first year Robin Bone took the pole vault crown with 3.65 metre effort. Fifth-year veteran Mila Similuk followed up on the field with a 5.40 metre long jump leap.
Rajiv Naidoo held Western’s top spot in the men’s 200 metre dash with a 23.30 time, while David Uren competed an exhibition triple jump and posted a 12.70 metre distance. Western record holder Josh Archer also competed in a solo 35 pound weight throw event with a 15.04 metre result.
The Mustangs also dominated the hurdle events, as Shalyn Kowalchuk and Sam Gordon went one and two in the women’s 60 metre event, finishing in 9.14 and 9.21 seconds respectively. Fourth year veteran Brent Bates also had an impressive showing in the men’s 60m high hurdles, finishing in 8.49 seconds – in front of first year rookie Michael Paisley with a 8.94 time, which improved substantially from the preliminary round.
