Waterloo, Ont. – Ontario University Athletics announced Wednesday that the University of Waterloo Warriors men's volleyball team has forfeited the results of five regular season games from the Fall 2015 semester - including four wins - due to the participation of an ineligible player.
As a result of dropping a course in early November, the ineligible player did not have the minimum number of courses required to compete within the regulations of the CIS and OUA. The player took part in five conference matches between Nov. 13 and Nov. 28, inclusively, all of which now stand as a loss with a score of 3-0 (25-0, 25-0, 25-0) for the opposing team.
- November 13 at Ryerson (Waterloo won 3-1)
- November 15 at Toronto (Waterloo won 3-1)
- November 20 vs. Windsor (Waterloo won 3-1)
- November 21 vs. Western (Waterloo won 3-0)
- November 28 at Queen's (Queen's won 3-2)
The Warriors also played against RMC on November 27 but that 3-1 victory remains as the individual did not compete in that match.
"We are profoundly disappointed that this error happened and we'll take the steps required to ensure this doesn't happen again," said Roly Webster, director of athletics and recreation at Waterloo. "The Warrior community is fully committed to supporting this team moving forward."
Webster has already initiated a review of the department's eligibility compliance processes.
As a result of the forfeited games, Waterloo's conference record drops to 3-8. All team and player statistics from the five forfeited contests remain unchanged with the exception of the ineligible player's statistics. This student-athlete will be allowed to compete again in the Winter 2016 semester provided he meets the CIS and OUA eligibility criteria.
"We are obviously very disappointed about this situation but as a team we have decided it is only going to make us stronger," said head coach Chris Lawson. "Every team faces adversity throughout the season and although this is a different kind, we are confident we can come together with a goal of qualifying for the post-season."
