Another big three points for streaking Lakers
It has been almost a month since the Nipissing Lakers men's soccer team last lost a game and Saturday against UOIT showed why.
In an intense, physical battle, the Lakers controlled the game almost for the full 90 minutes, scored on their opportunities and played solid defence on their way to a 3-1 victory and another three points in the standings.
Since they came up short against Ryerson on Sept. 12, the Lakers have gone 3-0-4 and have only surrendered five goals in those seven games – less than one per 90 minutes.
Their offence has shown up as well, scoring 11 times in that stretch.
Grainger Munro, who only allowed one goal Saturday was very good, making only three saves, but one of those stops included a penalty kick late in the game.
He is 3-2-4 on the season with a pair of shutouts.
The win was big to keep their unbeaten streak going, but more importantly, it now separates the Lakers and Ridgebacks by four points for fifth place in the East Division.
Currently Nipissing sits seven points up on Laurentian, who is chasing UOIT for the final post-season berth.
While the win doesn't mathematically secure Nipissing a spot in the playoffs, it gives them a solid cushion with just five games remaining on the schedule.
Andy Bago got things rolling for the Lakers in the seventh minute as he potted the opening goal of the game.
UOIT would respond eight minutes later, however, tying the game.
Controlling the play, Nipissing scored twice more, however, due to a foul on one and an offside – both questionable calls – the Lakers were denied the tallies and the half ended with the teams tied at one.
Brandon TeBrake scored what would eventually be the winning goal, a minute into the second half to give the Lakers the lead.
Jean-Michel Paulin notched a goal six minutes late to put the game on ice and secure the triumph for Nipissing.
The Lakers (4-2-5) will play their final home game of the 2015 season Sunday when they host the Trent Excalibur (1-9-1).
Game time is 2:30 p.m. at the Education Centre Field.

Cicchillo's header beats Warriors 2-1
Adding another win to their record and climbing up to the top of the OUA West standings, the York University men's soccer team came away with a 2-1 defeat against the Waterloo Warriors Saturday (Oct. 10) at York Stadium.
The Lions started the game strong tallying 19 shots in the first 45 minutes alone. However, Waterloo's Jae Jin Loe was able to execute off of his team's second chance of the half in the 10th minute. Running towards the Lions net off of a counterattack, Loe squeezed the ball past the fingers of Colm Vance (Bradford, Ont.) and the Lions were down 1-0.
The Warriors lead didn't last long however thanks to Michael Cox's (Calgary, Alta.) brilliant finish in the 43rd minute. Meeting the ball from a pass over the top of Warriors backline, Cox maintained his composure and struck the ball past Waterloo's keeper which put the Lions back in the contest.
Leveled at the half, the Lions came out hungry to gain the lead, putting overwhelming pressure on the Waterloo's defensive line. Eventually their efforts paid off in the 66th minute when Joey Cicchillo (North York, Ont.) finished off Jonathan Lao's (Unionville, Ont.) delivery into the technical area and convincingly headed the ball between the bars.
Next up for the men's side is another Warriors match-up that will be played on Friday (Oct. 16) in Waterloo. The game is set for 8:15 pm.

AXhuti bags four goals as Mac beats Algoma 8-1
Gersi Xhuti led the offensive barrage on Saturday, racking up four goals, as McMaster pumped eight past Algoma en route to an 8-1 victory.
Midfielder Yunus Mollayev added a brace of his own, while Stefan Scholz scored from the penalty spot in the dominant win which pushed McMaster's record to 9-3 and further solidified their place among the top three of the OUA West.
The match had just reset from Xhuti's first goal when the Marauder winger streaked through the Thunderbirds defensive line to pot a second, barely a minute on from the last. He would complete the hat-trick before the onset of the halftime break, striking again in the 34th minute.
On the final play of the half, Scholz took to the penalty spot after a Marauder break was illegally brought to a stop in the Thunderbirds box, and calmly slotted past the goalkeeper to give his team a 4-0 lead at the break.
The onslaught continued in the second, as Mollayev grabbed his first goal of the afternoon just two minutes after the restart, and an own goal followed in the 58th minute to make it a 6-0 game. Xhuti completed his rampant day five minutes later, with Mollayev capping off the Marauders offensive outburst with a cool finish in the 70th minute.
Small consolation came for Algoma three minutes from the final whistle, when Jubi Joseph Iferi scored from the penalty spot to deny Kieran Doyle-Davis the clean sheet.
The two teams return to Ron Joyce Stadium on Sunday, where they reconvene for the second half of their weekend doubleheader at 2:15 p.m.

Visiting Excalibur defeat Voyageurs 1-0
The Voyageurs men's soccer team looked to continue their recent hot streak today but were stymied by the visiting Trent Excalibur, losing a close 1-0 battle.
The Voyageurs came out of the gate on the offensive and put the pressure on Trent goalkeeper Jason Ronaldi early. Both teams traded offensive chances throughout the first half but it was Trent who struck first on a goal by Carl Deabreu in the 35th minute. The first half ended with the Voyageurs down 1-0.
The second half began with the Voyageurs on the offensive and would remain as such throughout the half. The squad created several scoring opportunities in the last 25 minutes but were denied by Ronaldi who made eight saves on the day for the Excalibur. Trent would create some chances of their own but Voyageurs goalkeeper, Connor Vande Weghe, rejected all incoming Excalibur shots to keep his team in the game throughout the half, finishing with six saves. Unfortunately, time ran out for the Voyageurs offense today as they drop to seventh place in the OUA East standings with a 3-7-1 record.
The Voyageurs are back in action tomorrow when they take on the UOIT Ridgebacks at the LU soccer field, game time set for 2:15pm.

No. 3 Lancers split weekend games at home
The No. 3 Lancer men's soccer team split their weekend home series against the Guelph Gryphons and Brock Badgers.
On Friday, Windsor broke their seven game win streak with a 5-2 loss to Guelph before rebounding on Saturday with a strong 4-0 win over Brock at Alumni Field.
Heading into Thanksgiving, Windsor is 10-2-1 on the season and remains in first place in the OUA west division, two points ahead of the York Lions.
Guelph was able to find the weaknesses in the Lancer defense early on Friday and built an early 2-0 lead just 18 minutes into the contest.
In the second half, the Gryphons built a three goal lead in the 65th minute before Jack Sargent knocked a cross into the middle of the 18-yard box behind Gryphon goalie Braden Taylor to get the Lancers on the board two minutes later.
Guelph retaliated with a pair of goals from brothers Tomasz and Jace Skublack before Mike Pio closed out the scoring for Windsor.
On Saturday against the Badgers, Windsor looked like an entirely different team dominating Brock from start to finish.
Jamar Redhead opened the scoring in the 31st minute. Rookie Noah Pio beat the Badger defenders to bring the ball into the 18-yard box and send a pass over to Redhead who was left open by the Brock defense.
Windsor built a two goal lead just two minutes later when Leighton Speechley-Price scored his CIS leading 11th goal of the year with some fancy footwork down the field and through the visiting defense.
The second half was all Iyowuna Jumbo as he scored both goals for the Blue & Gold to secure the 4-0 victory. Kyle Vizirakis earned the win in net, registering his ninth shut-out of the season.
Windsor will now travel to Waterloo to face the Waterloo Warriors and Laurier Golden Hawks next weekend on the road.

Bryan scores twice to power Ravens to victory
(OTTAWA, ON) — Following a disappointing mid-week draw on October 7th, the Carleton Ravens showed their resiliency by coming up with a hard-fought 2-0 result over the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday afternoon.
With the visiting Varsity Blues in town, Carleton was in tough against one of the CIS's top ranked teams. However, the Ravens never appeared phased by the encounter with Toronto, as Carleton came out of the gate playing with a chip on their shoulder.
Just as he has done all season, Carleton forward Andrew Bryan (Montreal, QC) gave the Ravens the early lead in the 11th minute when he smashed home a tasty dish served up from the boot of his forward running-mate, Mekonen Lovemore-White (Ottawa, ON).
Carleton sustained their pressure through the first 45 minutes, also managing to overcome any of Toronto's threatening attempts to lead 1-0 at the half.
Carleton started well in the second, as they had several chances to put away Toronto. The first opportunity came in the 68th minute when Mekonen Lovemore-White moved in on goal on a partial breakaway, but his heavy first touch sent the ball too far ahead and into the hands of a diving Toronto goalie, Rab Bruce-Lockhart.
Not to be denied, the Ravens' Andrew Bryan once again delivered a final knockout blow as he corralled the soccer ball up front and in a one-on-one move with the Toronto centre-back, he quickly turned past his marker before firing a high shot into the top corner past Bruce-Lockhart.
Carleton goalie Felix Daigle (Gatineau, QC) made two sensational saves in the 85th minute. His diving block on a free-kick attempt followed by another athletic leap on an inswinging corner helped his team sustain the two-goal cushion.
"First half was probably the best we played all year," said Ravens head coach Sandy Mackie. "We had a better performance today."
Carleton moves into 3rd place in the OUA East by earning full points against Toronto. They will play the OUA East's top team, the Ryerson Rams, in a massive division showdown tomorrow afternoon.
"[Ryerson] are top of the league, so we have to re-group. If we play like we played today, we'll compete with them," said Mackie.
Tomorrow is the final regular season home game of 2015.
