It appears as if the Nipissing Lakers men's soccer team is heating up at the perfect time of the season.
It appears as if the Nipissing Lakers men's soccer team is heating up at the perfect time of the season.
The Lakers made it two wins in a row and four games undefeated with their second win over their northern rivals, the Laurentian Voyageurs, after a 3-1 dominating win Wednesday night in North Bay.
From start to finish, the Lakers controlled the game, setting the pace, out-chancing, out-hustling and out-playing the Voyageurs.
A smothering defence, opportunistic offence and an overall strong team effort led to the win and the Riley Gallo Cup.
Nipissing grabbed a 1-0 lead thanks to captain Jean-Michel Paulin who scored this third goal against Laurentian this season. He finished off a nice run by chipping the ball past the keeper just before the half-time whistle.
The Lakers padded the lead just four minutes into the second half when Andy Bago found the back of the net for his second tally of the season.
It was another quick strike that put the game away as Brandon TeBrake scored for the second game in a row and made it 3-0.
The Voyageurs answered back thanks to a penalty kick goal late in the game, but that was as close as they would get as the Lakers were full marks for their key and deserving win.
Nipissing, after claiming the Riley Cup, will now focus their attention to Homecoming Weekend when they host the Queens Gaels and RMC Paladins on home field.
First up the Lakers will host the Gaels Saturday at 1 p.m.
