Lions salvage draw thanks to Whiteman's 90th minute goal
The York University Lions men's soccer team held in against the Windsor Lancers and tied 2-2 on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 6) at York Stadium thanks to a goal in the 90th minute by striker Jarek Whiteman.
The fifth-year striker from Brampton, Ont., found the back of the net just moments before the final whistle after converting a corner that was kicked into the box by Joey Cicchillo (North York, Ont.). The late goal preserved an unbeaten streak against OUA opponents that has now stretched 30 games.
The first half had a balanced diet of ball movement, solid goalkeeping and well-executed defensive strategy. Both sides played an aggressive style which led to multiple stoppages, ultimately leading to a slower pace of a game. That being said, both Windsor and York managed to get on the score board with two team-executed goals.
The Lions opened the scoring in the 35th minute when Matt Stinson (Toronto) was given a beautiful touch pass from Michael Cox (Calgary) just outside the box that Stinson capitalized on and fired it past Windsor goalkeeper Kyle Vizirakis. Stinson's tally was his second of the season.
A few clicks later in the 42nd minute the Lancers attacked the Lions midfield and launched a deep shot that was initially saved by goalkeeper Colm Vance (Bradford, Ont.), but a juicy rebound was produced which the Lancers pounced on and Leighton Speechly-Price (Lymington, England) tapped it past the goal line.
Just before the final whistle of the first half, Cox redirected a cross in the box with a brilliant header into the net but the goal was waved off because he was offside.
In the 70th minute, a great individual effort by Michael Pio (Windsor, Ont.) gave the Lancers the lead. Pio utilized his fancy footwork and beat multiple Lion defenders to put the Lancers up 2-1.
Vizirakis stood on his head on Sunday, making big save after big save during the latter parts of the match, but he ultimately couldn't withstand the immense pressure produced by the Lions' offence and allowed the late goal by Whiteman.
The Lions will look to stay unbeaten on the season on Thursday (Sept. 10) at 7:15pm when they host the rival McMaster Marauders at home. York Stadium will be filled with first-year students as part of the Frosh Frenzy game and the atmosphere will no doubt be electric by the first whistle.

Five-goal first half powers Mustangs to second consecutive win
SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. - A hat trick for Taso Bujouves helped the Mustangs to defeat the Algoma Thunderbirds 6-0 on Sunday afternoon at Superior Heights Field.
The win is Western's second of the season and puts the team in third place in the OUA West Division with a record of 2-1-1. With the loss, the Thunderbirds hold ninth place in OUA West with a 0-3-1 record.
Bujouves' three goals topped the scoresheet, while also securing a purple and white win within the first ten minutes of the game.
Nine minutes after the first whistle, he put the ball behind Algoma goalie Nicholas Palazzi to record the game-winning goal. That proved to not be enough for the native of Toronto, as he proceeded to score another goal at the 45-minute mark and the final goal of the game 65 minutes in.
Following Bujouves' initial goal, the Mustangs continued to play a strong first half. It was an aggressive 45 minutes of play, with two yellow cards going to the home team and one to the visitors, but nothing could tear Western's focus away from adding points to the scoreboard.
The Mustangs turned up the pressure on Algoma's goalies, sending eight shots their way in the first half. With two goals each from El-Houni and Parker Seymour, along with a goal from Jacob Peplinski, the teams headed to halftime with a score of 5-0 on the board.
Returning to the field for the final 45 minutes, the Mustangs had a more difficult time putting the ball into the Thunderbird net. Western kept keeper Nicholas Burnie busy with 13 shots, but only El-Houni was able to make the ball meet mesh to secure the 6-0 win.
On the other end of the field, Western goalie Ben Cowman received only two shots total, stopping both to earn himself a shutout.
The Mustangs return to the field and will attempt to add to their two-game winning streak when they take on the Laurier Golden Hawks in Western territory. Kickoff is set for 3:15 p.m. on Saturday, September 12 at Mustang Field.

Marauders score late to beat Badgers
The McMaster Marauders scored two late second-half goals to defeat the Brock Badgers 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Ron Joyce Stadium.
Both teams had to deal with oppressive heat, with temperatures on the field in the high 30's.
McMaster controlled play in the opening half and spent the majority of play in the Brock end of the pitch. In the 18th minute it looked like Marauder Chris Luxton had finished off a nice three-way passing play to grab the lead, but the offside flag went up and the goal was nullified.
Brock was content to remain in a defensive posture, and wait for chances on the counter-attack, but McMaster keeper Angelo Cavalluzzo did not face any quality chances and the half ended with the teams scoreless.
McMaster coach Dino Perri shuffled the line-up at halftime with immediate results as the Mac attack took on new momentum. The Marauders had several quality scoring chances but were stymied at finding the back of the net. When Gersi Xhuti headed a ball that hit the crossbar and stayed out it looked like Brock might escape with the draw.
But in the 75th minute, Xhuti made a clever pass to Karl Bicamumpaka, who fooled the Brock keeper and put the Marauders in front 1-0. Four minutes later, Marco Gennaccaro made a strong run down the right side and crossed to Yunus Mollayev, who made no mistake with his strike, making the score 2-0.
With 10 minutes left and both teams fighting the heat, Brock could not make any kind of late charge and the Marauders were able to close out the victory. Angelo Cavalluzzo did not have many chances to deal with as he registered the clean sheet.
The Marauders will next travel to face arch-rival York on September 10th in a match-up of the No. 1 and No. 4 ranked teams in the nation.
