OUA ANNOUNCES 2005 GOLF ALL-STARS
Second-year McMaster Marauder Jason Wellings (Dundas, ON) leads the first team after winning the Len Shore Memorial Trophy for low finisher at the OUA championships in London last week, shooting 146. Wellings, a second team all-star in 2004 who had two top-three finishes in OUA tournament play entering last week, shot an even-par 72 on the final day of competition to take the individual title by two strokes. His strong finish also helped the McMaster team earn silver behind the champion Waterloo Warriors.
Waterloo was well-represented with two players making the first team – team captain Justin Fluit (Cambridge, ON) and fourth-year veteran Jud Whiteside (Thornhill, ON). Both players were instrumental in the Warriors second golf championship in the past three years. Fluit finished in a tie for second at the OUA championship with a 148, while Whiteside provided the Warriors with quality play throughout the season, including a tie for fifth place last week.
Waterloo’s head coach Dave Hollinger was named men’s OUA Coach of the Year. It was Hollinger’s first time receiving the award.
Eric Frederickson (Toronto, ON) of the Guelph Gryphons, and Patrick Forbes (Kingston, ON) of the Queen’s Golden Gaels, round out the men’s first team. Frederickson was consistent in his two days at the OUA championships, shooting scores of 76 and 75 for a fifth-place tie. The B. Comm Marketing Management student finished the regular season strong with a tie for third at the McMaster Invitational and a fourth-place tie at the Guelph Invitational. Forbes showed he could stand up to the competition in his first year of play. His season included round of 71 that earned him a tie with Fluit for first place at the McMaster Invitational.
Sue Gleeson (Peterborough, ON) was one of the class performers in the inaugural season of OUA women’s play and an obvious choice to make the women’s first team. Gleeson won the OUA individual title with a solid two-day score of 155, seven strokes better than the closest player. That golfer was Lindsay McEwin (Bayfield, ON) a freshman who earned two individual titles this season in addition to the silver medal at the OUA championships.
Toronto Varsity Blues standout Danielle Greene (Ganonoque, ON) and Jaime Steedman (Brantford, ON) from the Waterloo Warriors also honoured with first team all-star status. Greene had a seventh-place finish at the OUA championships, while Steedman, a fourth-year Arts major finished in a tie for fifth after shooting 172 in the two rounds of play.
For leading his team to the OUA team championship, Western’s Alan Edmunds was honoured as the women’s OUA Coach of the Year.
