Western and Guelph advance to OUA lacrosse championship final
Gm. 7 - 10:00 a.m. UOIT 14, York 6
UOIT picked up their first win of the tournament beating the York Lions 14-6 on Saturday morning at Tindall Field in Kingston. The game was closer then the score shows as York headed into the second half all-square with UOIT at 4-4. The Ridgebacks exploaded for 10 goals in the second half however and took the victory.
Taylor Milburn scored four goals to lead the Ridgebacks while Kristen Bright added three of her own.
The Lions offense was almost entirely supplied by Staci Crozier who had five of the Lions six goals and added an assist on the other.
York finishes the tournament 10th while UOIT takes 9th spot.
Gm. 8 11:45 a.m. Queen's 9, McMaster 6
The home team Queen's Gaels edged out the McMaster Marauders for their first win of the weekend 9-6 on Tindall Field. Queen's took a commanding lead in the first half striking for seven goals before McMaster was finally able to get on the board with 33 seconds remaining in the opening frame.
Mackenzie Clemons had a hat-trick before half and Teresa Mayo kept her offensive prowess going adding four goals in the game, two in each half. The Marauders had three goals from Taylor Topo but it wasn't enough.
McMaster came out with five goals in the second half but could not complete the comeback after pulling within two late in the game.
Queen's will play for 5th place tomorrow at 11:15am against Toronto while McMaster will take on Trent at 9:30am.
Gm. 9 1:30 p.m. Trent 7, Toronto 10
Varsity Blues top Trent 10-7 to advance to 5th place game.
Trent's Leah Ogilvie had four goals including three in the second half but it wasn't enough to get the Excalibur back into the game after Toronto put up even scores of five a piece per half.
With Trent knocking on the door mid-way through the second half Larissa Boychuk of the Varsity Blues scored her second, third and fourth goals of the game all in a row to put the game out of reach.
Witht he win Toronto takes on the host Queen's Gaels tomorrow at 11:15am while Trent will meet McMaster in the first game of the day Sunday.
Gm. 10 (Semi) 3:15 p.m. Guelph 8, Brock 6
The Guelph Gryphons used a strong first half to get past the Brock Badgers in their OUA semifinal matchup and will move on to the OUA Championship game against Western tomorrow afternoon at 2:45pm.
Brock was the first to hit the scoreboard as Kassidy Doherty put the Badgers on the board five minutes in. After Guelph added two straight goals to move in front Doherty added her second of the game to even the score.
After Brock took a 3-2 lead the Gryphons Dana Skyvington scored twice in just over a minute before Jade Sullivan added another and Guelph took a 5-3 lead at the break.
Guelph added three more early and Brock was never able to get close enough to give the Gryphons much trouble.
Brock will get a chance to come away with a medal as they take on Laurier in the bronze medal game tomorrow at 1pm.
Gm. 11 (Semi) 5:00 p.m. Laurier 7, Western 16
The defending champion Western Mustangs continued their dominance and bested the Laurier Golden Hawks 16-7 in the final game of the day on Saturday in Kingston.
The Mustangs kept their winning streak alive, having not lost since the 2010 OUA Championship game against Laurier. This year the Golden Hawks gave Western no trouble in the semifinal.
Western was simply dominant, scoring the first four goals of the game before Laurier was able to get on the board. The Mustangs added seven more to their first half total and took a commanding 11-4 lead into the second half. They tallied five more times to close out Laurier 16-7.
Lauren Stewart led the way for Western with four goals while Tawnie Johnson and Michelle Farrugia each scored three.
Laurier ended up with the leading scorer in the game as Sara Hatch tallied six of the Golden Hawks seven goals in the game in a losing effort.
Cait Mancuso got the win in goal for Western.
The Mustangs look to keep their winning streak alive and add another championship to their credit as they take on Guelph in the final tomorrow at 2:45pm.
Laurier gets a chance for a bronze medal against Brock tomorrow at 1pm.
