W-Lacrosse Roundup: Western improves to 5-0, Toronto improves to 7-1

TORONTO - The Western Mustangs women's lacrosse team defeated the McMaster Marauders 17-4 for the second time this season on Sunday (Oct. 6) extending their 2013-14 undefeated regular season record to 5-0.
Although McMaster opened the scoring just four minutes into the game, the Mustangs responded quickly with three goals of their own before trading points with the Marauders to set the score at 6-3 for Western at the end of the half.
The Mustangs dominated the second half, taking a 10-3 lead and limiting the Marauders to just one goal in the half. Fran Bonomi scored five goals in the win as the Mustangs ended the match with a final score of 17-4.
Along with Bonomi's outstanding effort, strong performances came from Heather Pearson (three goals, one assist), Tasha MacDonald (two goals, three assists) and Tawnie Johnson (three goals, one assist). Once again, the defensive line of Alexa McAllister, Kristen Stafford, Jesse Porter and Jenna Clarke proved resilient against the oncoming attack.
Western's head coach Dave Hastings said the high number of assists indicated the unselfish play and teamwork displayed by the Mustangs, and was pleased with the win. "We had a bit of a slow start," says Hastings, "but the team started shooting with confidence in the second half."
The Mustangs are back on the field on Saturday, Oct. 12 as they host Laurier and UOIT at home.

Toronto 14 vs. Laurier 7
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's lacrosse team notched their fifth straight win, defeating the Laurier Golden Hawks 14-7 on Sunday, Oct. 6 at Scarborough Campus.
With the win, the Blues improve to 7-1 with four games remaining in the regular season.
Tied 5-5 at the half, the Blues exploded for nine goals in the second half, led by a five-goal performance from veteran Taryn Grieder (Cobourg, Ont.).
First-year midfielder Melissa Holland and fifth-year attacker Larissa Boychuk each added three goals, while Carly Heitzner, Emily Boyer and Sarah Jamieson had singles tallies in the win.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Sunday, Oct. 13 as they head to Waterloo, Ont., to take on the Trent Excalibur and Queen's Gaels.

OSHAWA, Ont. - The UOIT women’s lacrosse team hosted several OUA competitors on Saturday at the Civic Recreation Complex in Oshawa.
The Ridgebacks opened the day against Trent in a tightly contested match. UOIT entered half with a 4-3 lead on the strength of three goals from Britt Simmons (Whitby, Ont.). Simmons would lead the Ridgebacks in scoring finishing the game with five goals.
The second half saw teams continue to exchange goals including four lead changes. However, UOIT ended up on the wrong side of the final lead change and fell 9-8. Other UOIT goal scorers included Kristen Bright (Whitby, Ont.) who recorded two goals and Taylor Milburn (Whitby, Ont.). Goalkeeper Tessa Lam (Brooklin, Ont.) was named game MVP for the Ridgebacks.
In their second and final match of the day, UOIT faced off with the perennial powerhouse Laurier Golden Hawks. Laurier jumped out to a quick lead and tested the Ridgebacks throughout the match. UOIT was led by Milburn (Whitby, Ont.) who recorded two goals and was named Ridgebacks game MVP in the 11-4 loss. Other UOIT goal scorers included Bright and Jill Carroll (Whitby, Ont.).

The Varsity Blues women's lacrosse team defeated the Queen's Gaels 11-8 to cap off a 3-0 weekend on Sunday, Sept. 29 in Peterborough, Ont.
With the win, the Blues improve to 6-1, with their only loss coming at the hand of the OUA defending champion Western Mustangs.
Veteran Taryn Grieder (Cobourg, Ont.) led the Blues with three goals and three assists, while rookie standout Sarah Jamieson had two goals and two assists. Melissa Holland added two goals, while Olivia Lubanski, Kelly Robinson Larissa Boychuk and Mary Anne Meerasabeer each scored once in the win. Lubanski's tally was the first of her four-year career with the Blues.
Grieder and Jamieson each scored two in the first half as the Blues built a 7-3 lead at the midway point of the game. The Gaels attempted to rally with five in the second half, but the Blues kept them at bay and held on for the win.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Sunday, Oct. 6 as they host the Laurier Golden Hawks and Brock Badgers at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus. Game times are 8 a.m. and 1:15 p.m., respectively.

The Gryphon women's lacrosse team continued their stellar season with a pair of victories over York and Trent on Saturday in Peterborough.
In their first game Saturday the Gryphons shutout the York Lions 14-0. Rookie Katelyn Ayers led the team in scoring with six goals and Laurel McGillis scored four. Captain Dana Skyvington contributed another two goals and an assist. Danielle Boudreau scored a goal and an assist and rookie Taylor Kidd scored one. Julie Bryan tallie two assists and both Hannah Smith and Hayley Cowls had one assist. The team played with intensity, transitioning the ball quickly down the field. Defence played a strong game with Linnaea Jasiuk and Andrea Dykun in net.
In their next contest the Gryphons dominated once again, defeating Trent 18-3. The game showed the team's diversity with nine players contributing goals. Captain Dana Skyvington led the team with four goals and three assists and fourth year player Jade Sullivan had three goals and four assists. Katie Cartwright had three goals and rookies Katelyn Ayers and Laura Gutauskas each had a pair of goals and assists. Laurel McGillis, Julie Bryan, Hayley Cowls, and Danielle Boudreau all chipping in a single goal. The team played a patient game and worked well with each other on offense.

With the wins, the Blues improve to 5-1 and the midway point of the regular season.
The Blues topped the Ridgebacks 10-6 in their second consecutive meeting.
First-year midfielder Sarah Jamieson (Etobicoke) once again led the Blues with four goals, while Taryn Grieder (Cobourg) had two. Larissa Boychuk, MaryAnne Meerasabeer and Christine Neatby each added a single tally in the win.
Toronto went onto defeat the Martlets 16-6 later in the afternoon.
Grieder led the Blues with five goals, while Jamieson had four. Carly Heitzner added two and Meerasabeer, Boychuk, Kristie Liu, Tasha Watkins, Emily Boyer and Lynn Li all added a goal apiece in the victory.
The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow as they take on the Queen's Gaels in Peterborough at 11:45 a.m.
