Western favoured to three-peat at OUA lacrosse championship
The OUA lacrosse championships are back at Queen’s University this season as the two-time defending champion Western Mustangs eye their third consecutive Patterson Cup. The championships span Nov. 1-3 and the action gets under way from Tindall Field Saturday at noon on Friday. Under Armour Lacrosse is the official supplier of the OUA lacrosse championship.
Last season in Kingston, Western beat Guelph 12-7 in the gold medal game, marking the second straight year Western beat Guelph in the final.
The Mustangs return 2012 OUA offensive MVP Tenyka Snider (Caledon, Ont.), as well as all-star Tawnie Johnson (Ohsweken, Ont.) and talented forward Michelle Farrugia (Brampton, Ont.). Farrugia scored a game-high four goals in last years’ final against Guelph, while Johnson scored three goals including the game-winner.
Western is a heavy favourite again this year after playing to a perfect 10-0 record this season. The Mustangs have dominated the lacrosse circuit and haven’t lost to OUA competition since dropping the OUA final to Laurier in 2010. Western defends their crown Friday at 7 p.m. against the winner of the UOIT-McMaster contest at noon.
After back-to-back silver medals, the Guelph Gryphons figure to factor in the championship discussion over the weekend. The Gryphs bring back all-stars Katelyn Cartwright (Orangeville, Ont.) and Dana Skyvington (Mississauga, Ont.) for another crack at Western and ultimately the OUA title. Guelph’s first game is against the Trent Excalibur Friday at 3:30 p.m.
The Toronto Varsity Blues could also factor into the podium equation this weekend after winning the consolation final against McMaster last season and posting an 8-3 record this season. Toronto enters the tournament as the top team in the east and return all-star Tasha Watkins (Whitby, Ont.). Look out for rookie midfielder Sarah Jamieson, who has been a revelation for the Blues. The Etobicoke, Ont., native scored 12 goals and four assists in her first three games including six in a close 14-11 loss to Western. Toronto draws the late game, as they take on the winner of Brock and York at 8:30 p.m.
The host Queen’s Gaels also came away with a medal at last years’ championships, beating Laurier 8-7 in the bronze medal game. They’ll rematch the Golden Hawks on Friday night at 5:15 p.m., so one of these teams will be out early. Unfortunately for Laurier, reigning defensive MVP Hanna Burnett and all-star Jory Garibaldi played out their eligibility last season and are no longer with the team.
Also competing at the OUA lacrosse championship this weekend are the UOIT Ridgebacks, Brock Badgers, York Lions and Trent Excalibur.
