Toronto 67 @ Ryerson 85
A career night on the glass from Annie Sokoloff (North Vancouver, B.C.) helped guide the No. 7 Ryerson Rams women's basketball team to an 85-67 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues on Wednesday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Sokoloff pulled down 17 rebounds over the course of the night and added 12 points to lead the Rams. Keneca Pingue-Giles (Winnipeg, Man.) had a team-high 20 points and six assists while Sofia Paska (Etobicoke, Ont.) and Siki Jez (Kitchener, Ont.) each netted 14 points in the win.
Early in the game the two teams pushed back and forth at each other in an attempt to establish a lead, making for an entertaining opening half. There were nine ties and 15 lead changes throughout the game before Ryerson put the game away in the fourth quarter.
The Rams held a slight 19-15 lead after the first quarter of play before holding a six-point edge at halftime at 38-32. Toronto won the third quarter to narrow the deficit to 54-52 heading into the final frame.
In the fourth the Rams were able to find their rhythm offensively and push the tempo which led to 31 points in the quarter while limiting the Blues to just 15 to cruise to the 18-point victory.
The win pushes Ryerson's record to 15-3 on the season which sets a new program record for most wins in a season.
"I'm really proud of this team and the time and effort they put in every day," said head coach Carly Clarke following the game. "It is a great milestone and great to see their hard work pay off but I hope it's just a milestone because this team has their sights set on more."
The Rams extended their win streak to nine straight games, something that is important to Sokoloff as she enters the final few home games of her career.
"Ending my career this way is the best way possible. I'm so proud of the team and it makes me emotional just because it is my last year and I get to finish my career on this note."
Toronto's Jill Stratton scored a game-high 21 points while Jasmine Lewin and Rahshida Atkinson each added 11 points in the loss for the Blues.
Ryerson widens their gap atop the OUA east standings while Toronto falls to 8-8 and remain in third place. The win also contributed to the cumulative standings for the BIA Cup which, coupled with the two wins the men's team has over Toronto this year, gives Ryerson three wins in the four game series to claim the first BIA Cup.
The Rams will wrap up the regular season next Friday, February 20 when they host the Queen's Gaels at 6:00 p.m.
