Waterloo 47 @ Laurier 60
The No. 5 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's basketball team engaged in a defensive battle with the Waterloo Warriors on Wednesday night with the Hawks pulling away late to earn a 60-47 win over their crosstown rivals.
On a night in which neither team shot the ball particularly well, it was the Golden Hawks using their size advantage to win the battle on the boards to help them come away with their 12th straight victory. Laurier outrebounded Waterloo by a whopping 57-38 margin, including 19 offensive rebounds, as the purple and gold ran their record to 12-1 on the season.
Meanwhile, the Warriors fall to 3-11 and have now lost five straight games.
Leading the way for the purple and gold on this night was second year guard Nicole Morrison of Hamilton. Filling in for starter Lee Anna Osei of Toronto, who was not dressed for this contest, Morrison took advantage of the increased responsibility as she finish the game with 14 points and 11 rebounds to record the first double-double of her career. The 11 rebounds were also a career high, eclipsing her previous best of seven in a game.
Joining Morrison in double figures was Kaitlyn Schenck of Kitchener, Ont. The third year guard scored a game-high 15 points as she scored 10-plus points for the second time in three games.
Also chipping in for Laurier was Whitney Ellenor of Pickering, Ont., who finished with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds while Sam Jacobs of Enniskillen, Ont., pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds and added seven points.
For the Warriors, Amy Jarvis of Burlington, Ont., led Waterloo's offensive attach as she finished with 13 points. However, no other Warrior player was able to reach double-figures as Laurier held the Warriors to 30.8 percent shooting on the night.
Ryerson 73 @ Brock 56
The Brock University women's basketball team (5-8 OUA) was defeated by the No. 7 ranked Ryerson Rams (12-3 OUA) by the final score of 73-56 on Wednesday night at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
The Badgers fell behind early in the first quarter as the Rams were able to capitalize on Brock's turnovers and sloppy play. The second quarter proved to be better for the Badgers as they managed to go on a run that made the score 32-30 for Ryerson with four minutes left in the frame. Ryerson did not let the home side get any closer as they took a 46-33 lead into the locker room at half time.
Both teams stepped up their defensive play in the third quarter as Ryerson was held to ten total points and Brock was held to nine total points in the third. Ultimately, the home side could not overcome their first half deficit and lost the contest by the final score of 73-56.
Brock's offensive leaders on the night were Kayla Santilli with 17 points,Jenalyn Yumol with 12 points and Kira Cornelissen, who chipped in with 10 points, 5 rebounds.
The Ryerson Rams were led by the play of Keneca Pingue-Giles who ended the night with a double-double 20 points, 14 rebounds. Mariah Nunes chipped in with 10 points, 8 assists on the night. Three more Rams managed to score double digits on the night. Silvana Jez, Annie Sokoloff and Cara Tiemens all contributed 10 points respectively.
The home side shot 31.3% (20-64) from the field, only 17.4% (4-23) from behind the arc and 70.6% (12-17) from the free throw line. Ryerson ended the contest shooting 42.6% (29-68) from the field, 33.3% (6-18) from the three point line and 52.9% (9-17) from the free throw line. The Rams managed to outrebound Brock 49-29.
McMaster 72 @ Guelph 64
Thanks to a big fourth quarter in which McMaster outscored Guelph 27-18, the Marauders were able to defeat the Gryphons 72-64 on Wednesday night in OUA women's basketball action. Danielle Boiago (Hamilton, ON) had 30 points and 10 rebounds for the Marauders. Katherine MacTavish (Waterloo, ON) had 30 points and 13 rebounds for the Gryphons. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 6-6 on the season while McMaster improves to 10-4.
Both teams in Wednesday's night matchup at the W.F. Mitchell Athletic Centre got off to a very slow start offensively. At the end of the first quarter, the game was tied 9-9, with Guelph only hitting three of their first 18 shots for 17% shooting. As the second quarter got underway, it seemed like both teams shook their cobwebs. Each team would trade three pointers to make it 12-12.
Kate MacTavish would then go on to score eight straight points helping the Gryphons jump out to the lead. Half way through the quarter, the Marauders would switch to a 2-3-zone defence which seemed to cause some problems for the Gryphons as McMaster would go on a 10-0 run to end the half. At the break, the Marauders took a four point lead to the locker room.
When the third quarter rolled round, both teams seemed to hit their stride. MacTavish would absolutely dominate in the post in the third quarter, as the Gryphons halftime adjustments appeared to solve the Mac zone defence. MacTavish, who was coming off of a 19 point, 19 rebound performance versus Waterloo, scored 12 of her team's 21 points in the third quarter as Guelph led 46-45 heading to the fourth. MacTavish finished the night with 30 points to go along with 13 rebounds. It marks the second time this season the fourth year forward has reached the 30 point plateau (MacTavish scored 35 points in a win versus Western in the season opener).
While the Marauders were struggling to slow down MacTavish, the same could be said about Guelph's inability to contain McMaster guard Danielle Boiago. Boiago matched MacTavish with 30 points of her own, to go along with 10 rebounds. The Hamilton native was four of eight from beyond the arc and led the way for the Marauders who would explode for 27 points in the fourth quarter. A combination of some costly turnovers late on Guelph's behalf, combined with the sharp-shooting of Boiago would ultimately be the difference as the Marauders led 67-53 with a minute and a half left in regulation. When the final buzzer sounded, McMaster would come out on top 72-64.
