TORONTO ON PACE FOR ANOTHER OUA CHAMPIONSHIP SWEEP
The women's and men's sprints started off the finals session as the women's 50 Metre Freestyle saw a U of T sweep. Sasha Theron placed first in 26.86, Jen Porenta second in 26.90 and Kristin McIlroy was third in 27.33, all three times below the CIS standard. In the men's race, Kurtis Miller (University of Western Ontario) took the gold in a time of 23.07, Martyn Forde (U of T) second and Rob Taylor (UWO) third.
Next on the agenda was the women's and men's 200 Metre Individual Medley. Kristy MacLennan (Wilfred Laurier) placed first in the women's race with a time of 2:20.65 easily eclipsing the CIS standard. Kristin Cloutier (Guelph) took second and Marci Bryon (U of T) was third, with both women below CIS standard time. The men's race saw Laurentian's Ryan Smith win his second gold of the meet in a time of 2:06.07, as he won the 200 Metre IM to go along with his 400 Metre IM victory from Friday night. Josh Berry and Marco Monaco both from U of T took second and third respectively.
In the women's 400 Metre Freestyle Laura Kendall (Guelph) was first timed at 4:19.63, Kate Plyley (U of T) second and Carly Cermak (McMaster) third, all three times below the CIS standard. In the men's race Ian McLeod (U of T) won gold, in a time of 4:00.15, Scott Chester (McMaster) second and Chris Bento third. Blair Smith of Laurentian qualified for the finals and finished in a tie for fifth place.
The 100 Metre Backstroke followed as Alyssa Hubert (Guelph) finished first in a blistering 1:03.71, Jane Wilkinson and Kim Conti both of McMaster rounded out the podium in second and third. On the men's side Rob Taylor (UWO) won gold winning in a time of 55.01, he was followed by Scott Van Doormaal (Guelph) in second and Oleg Chernukhin (Waterloo) in third. This was another fast race as six of the eight swimmers were below CIS standard time.
The women's 200 Metre Breaststroke saw Brittany Segeren (Queen's) place first in 2:36.82, followed by Kimmi Labbett (UWO) second and Katy Perry (Queen's) in third. For the men, Marco Monaco and Josh Berry made it gold and silver for U of T as Monaco won in 2:19.55. Mike Materski (UWO) rounded out the podium finishing in third place.
The meet returned to the sprints to end the individual portion of the Saturday night finals session as the women's and men's 50 Metre Butterfly took place. The U of T women swept the board in the first race as Jen Porenta won in 28.87, followed by her teammates Sasha Theron second and Orlagh O'Kelly in third. For the men, Kurtis Miller (UWO) took the sprint double Saturday as he followed his 50 Metre Free victory with a gold in the Fly in a time of 24.91. His time was only 0.08 seconds off the OUA record set by teammate Brad Vanderkam in 2004. Ironically, Vanderkam would finish second in this race followed by Ian McLeod (U of T) in third.
The women's and men's 4x200 Metre Freestyle Relay would finish of the Saturday finals session. In what was a dominating evening for the U of T Blues they would win both the women's and men's races. The women won in a time of 8:24.95 followed more than eight seconds later by the McMaster women in second and Guelph would wind up in third. Laurentian's A-team finished in ninth while the B-team finished in a respectable 11th. For the men, U of T took first in a time of 7:42.99 followed in a photo finish by McMaster in 7:43.06 and Carleton would take third. The Laurentian A-team took 11th place and the B-team finished in 15th.
