Ryerson appoints Matt Harris as new bench boss for Rams sqaud
TORONTO, Ont. – The Ryerson University Department of Athletics is pleased to announce the appointment of Matt Harris as the new Head Coach of the Ryerson Rams men’s volleyball program following a national search to fill the position.
Harris has spent six years as a member of Ryerson’s coaching staff, starting with the women’s program back in 2012. Harris made the move to the men’s side in 2015-16 as an assistant coach and spent this past season in a co-head coach role.
“We are pleased to have a coach of Matt’s credentials continue with our volleyball program,” said Director of Athletics, Dr. Ivan Joseph. “For the past year Matt served as a co-head coach along with Adam Simac and helped lead the program to success. Matt’s appointment to the Canadian Youth National Team and his past success with Team Ontario are strong indicators of his ability to lead our program to new levels.”
In addition to his time at Ryerson, Harris has worked with Ontario Volleyball Association (OVA) clubs such as Pakmen, Scarborough Titans, Aurora Storm, Ottawa Fusion, National Capitals, and Ottawa Kangaroos.
Harris is also coming off a successful 2017 summer as the head coach of Ontario’s Canada Games team where he led Ontario to its first gold medal at the Games since 1993. As coach of Team Ontario he has also won multiple medals at the National Team Challenge Cup (NTCC).
“It is a huge honour to have been selected to lead this program for the upcoming season,” said Harris. “Having graduated a core group of student-athletes this year, I look forward to the opportunity to build a program that makes an impact on the court, in the Ryerson community, and on the greater community as a whole. The Rams men’s volleyball program has demonstrated a lot of growth in recent years; I see the program continuing to build on this momentum in the years to come to flourish as a program that makes the Ryerson community proud.”
Before Harris takes to the court again at Ryerson, he will lead the Canadian Youth National Team at the US HP Tournament in Tulsa, Oklahoma in July.
The 2018-19 Ryerson volleyball season begins this October.
