Zorn, Veresuk, Henke named OUA football players of the week
Burlington, Ont. – Joey Zorn, Devin Veresuk, and Samuel Henke have been named Canadian Football Perspective's OUA Players of the Week for Week 9.
Offensive Player of the Week – Joey Zorn, Windsor
Like he has been all season for the Lancers, Joey Zorn was a difference-maker in the team's regular season finale in what turned out to be a playoff-clinching win for Windsor.
Zorn, a native of Flint, Michigan, did not have the ball in his hands a lot in the Lancers' Week 9 win, but when he did, the dynamic running back made things happen. On nine carries from the backfield, Zorn reeled off 76 yards for an average of 8.4 per carry. His longest rush of the day came just over five minutes into the second quarter, when he broke toward the sideline and went the distance for a 23-yard touchdown.
While that major may have been his first on the ground for the day, the first-year business student had already made his way to the end zone toward the end of the opening quarter. Zorn reeled in a 26-yard passing play for what proved to be his first of two scores on the day. That play also marked one of two catches in the game for Zorn, who coupled that with a 28-yard reception to bring his total in the air to 54 yards.
When the dust settled on the team's 39-11 win, Zorn finished off with 130 scrimmage yards on just 11 touches to go along with the two touchdowns, with Windsor now turning their attention to the playoffs.
Defensive Player of the Week – Devin Veresuk, Windsor
For the second time this season, Devin Veresuk stood out among his conference counterparts on defence, stuffing the Week 9 stat sheet for his postseason-bound Windsor squad.
There wasn't much Veresuk didn't do in his team's final regular season matchup with the Warriors, but much of his damage came in the final frame with victory in Windsor's sights. He would start with a pair of tackles in the fourth quarter, part of his five solo efforts on the day and 5.5 total takedowns, before setting his sights on the Waterloo backfield. With Waterloo starting a drive on their own 50, the second-year linebacker took down quarterback Matt Linn for his first sack of the day. If that wasn't enough, Veresuk would do the same on the very next play. The Windsor, Ont. native once again took down Linn and this time, forced the fumble as well, that was promptly recovered by Windsor and all but ended any chance of Waterloo making a comeback.
It was truly a triumphant return to the lineup for Veresuk after missing the team's previous four games following a terrific start to the 2022 season.
Special Teams Player of the Week – Samuel Henke, Toronto
With plenty of playoff implications on the line, points were hard to come by in the Week 9 tilt between Toronto and McMaster, but Samuel Henke's efforts ensured that the final score finished in favour of the former.
After the Marauders jumped out to a 7-0 lead six minutes into the game, attention then turned to the Blues to respond, and they were able to start closing the gap courtesy of Henke. The first-year kicker from Franklin, Tennessee capped off Toronto's 10-play drive with a 27-yard field goal and the team's first points of the day. He would follow that up early in the second quarter with his second make, this time from just 11 yards out to cut the McMaster lead to just one. Before the half was out, Henke gave his team the lead courtesy of his third of three makes on the day, an 18-yarder in the final two minutes.
Henke would finish with those nine points on the day after a perfect three-for-three performance in the kicking game, and each of those points proved pivotal in Toronto's slim 13-10 playoff-clinching victory.
