Magnaye-Jones, Veresuk, MacDonald named OUA football players of the week
Burlington, Ont. – Savaughn Magnaye-Jones, Devin Veresuk, and Ben MacDonald have been named Canadian Football Perspective's OUA Players of the Week for Week 2.
Offensive Player of the Week – Savaughn Magnaye-Jones, Western
Matching the looming lightning that wreaked havoc through Saturday night's game, Western receiver Savaughn Magnaye-Jones was electrifying when the ball hit his hands in the Mustangs 34-19 win.
The fourth-year wideout, who led the OUA in receiving a year ago, put on a clinic in Western's tilt with Wilfrid Laurier, and did so with just five receptions on the night. The first time Magnaye-Jones got his hands on the ball was on a 28-yard touchdown from Evan Hillock to open the game's scoring halfway through the first quarter. He would add his second major of the day, a 23-yard play, early in the second to extend Western's lead to 11 at the time. Later in the half, the management and organizational studies major from Hamilton, Ont. delivered his longest score of the day, completing the touchdown trifecta with a 40-yarder.
The continued chemistry that Magnaye-Jones has developed with Hillock helped him finish the game with 145 yards on five receptions, to go along with his three touchdowns, leading Western to their second victory of the season in the process.
Defensive Player of the Week – Devin Veresuk, Windsor
In need of a big performance on both sides of the ball, Windsor had several players step up on the road against Guelph, and anchoring the defensive stand for the Lancers was Devin Veresuk.
The second-year linebacker from Windsor, Ont. was a noticeable presence throughout the impressive Lancers' victory, starting with the opening play. Veresuk racked up his initial takedown of the day, a tackle for loss, on Guelph's first offensive effort of the matchup, stuffing Juwan Jeffrey five yards behind the line of scrimmage. That play set the tone for the rest of Veresuk's Week 2 efforts, as the mechanical engineering major registered a total of seven tackles overall, including six of the solo variety and 1.5 tackles for loss.
Veresuk's efforts also helped anchor the Windsor defence that limited Guelph to just 269 yards of offence and 13 first downs on the afternoon.
Special Teams Player of the Week – Ben MacDonald, McMaster
It was all McMaster in their second game of the season, and doing all he could to contribute to the win was kicker Ben MacDonald, who chipped in with a perfect day at the office for the maroon machine.
Despite the lopsided final score, the Marauders were unable to find the endzone through the opening half, leaving the pair of MacDonald makes integral to their early lead. Sandwiched by a trio of safeties, it was a pair of 25-yard makes from the first-year kicker that built up McMaster's lead to 12-0 at the break.
The Kamloops, B.C. native studying health and society all but sealed the win with another two made field goals in the final frame, including a game-long 36-yarder. With three successful point after attempts added to his total, MacDonald served up a 15-point performance for the Marauders in their 39-1 victory over York.
MacDonald would also stand out in the punting game while serving double duty, adding in a pair of punts inside the 20-yard line, with a long of 42 yards.
