Akinnusi, Gonzalez Delgado named OUA athletes of the week
Burlington, Ont. – Oluwatito Akinnusi and Diego Gonzalez Delgado have been named OUA athletes of the week for the period ending November 26, 2023.
Oluwatito Akinnusi, Basketball, Brock Badgers
Upsets and career highs came hand in hand this weekend for Brock’s Oluwatito Akinnusi as she delivered a pair of impactful performances this weekend on the hardwood.
The Badgers’ weekend started with a challenge to protect home court against one of the best teams in the country. The guard/forward from Kleinburg, Ont. was aggressive on both the offensive and defensive ends against the No. 3 Queen’s Gaels, en route to earning 11 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. In addition to the double-double performance – her second of the season – Akinnusi added in three assists, and was an instrumental all-around contributor to Brock’s upset win.
Following up on Saturday night against McMaster, the junior was front and centre once again in the Badgers’ nine-point win. While another six rebounds and three assists were important pieces of the puzzle for the St. Catharines squad, what really stood out in the team’s second straight win was Akinnusi’s career-high in points. She led the way with 37 points, shooting nearly 58% from the field, and in the process, surpassed her teammate Madalyn Weinert for the conference scoring lead (21.2 PPG).
Diego Gonzalez Delgado, Water Polo, Toronto Varsity Blues
It was a historic weekend for the Varsity Blues water polo team as they claimed their seventh consecutive OUA banner in the pool, and much like he has in past banner-winning efforts, veteran Diego Gonzalez Delgado was at the heart of the team’s success.
The Ottawa, Ont. standout served as an offensive focal point for the Blues all weekend in their quest for another title. In what proved to be a dominant semifinal win against the McMaster Marauders, the third-year human biology major notched a pair of goals, while also being a key facilitator for the team’s lofty 29-point output.
Following his stellar performance therein, the power forward once again led his team to victory against the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the gold medal match. Back playing in the nation’s capital and his hometown, the local netted a hat-trick for Toronto, en route to another lopsided 19-6 victory.
Not only did he help lead his team to the title, but he earned some individual hardware as well, picking up the most valuable player nod for his efforts.
