
Weinert, Rouleau named OUA athletes of the week
Burlington, Ont. – Madalyn Weinert, and William Rouleau have been named OUA athletes of the week, fueled by Milk2Go Sport, for the period ending January 28, 2024.
Madalyn Weinert, Basketball, Brock Badgers
It was a weekend of milestones for junior Madalyn Weinert, as she and the Brock Badgers ventured to Thunder Bay to take on the Thunderwolves.
Starting their weekend with a Friday night tilt, the Badgers built up a 20-point lead in the first half and rode to a comfortable win from there. Shooting 13-for-16 from the field, Weinert paced her team’s impeccable performance with a season-high of 32 points in 32 minutes of action. To round out her offensive and defensive clinic, the St. Catharines, Ont. local also produced seven rebounds, three assists, five steals, and three blocks for the game.
Following up on that impressive outing, the Badgers came back on night two, this time playing their way through a back-and-forth first half. The medical sciences major led her team out of the break and got them back on top in the fourth quarter, registering her sixth double-double of the year with yet another season-high of 34 points and 10 rebounds. Weinert also added a pair of assists, blocks, and steals to her final stat line.
In addition to taking home the two wins, Weinert also earned a personal milestone, reaching 1,000 career OUA points for the Central Division leading Badgers.
William Rouleau, Hockey, McGill Redbirds
Picking up a pair of victories on the road, the McGill Redbirds proved to be a powerhouse once again to stay atop the talented OUA East Division.
The Redbirds first travelled to Toronto to open their weekend against the York Lions. The decisive win was led by sophomore centre William Rouleau, who sparked the team with two goals in the first period and another in the second, completing the hat trick as part of the 7-1 triumph. Adding to the three goals, Rouleau rounded out his four-point night with a helper. It was the second consecutive 7-1 victory for the Montreal team, and the first time in McGill history they posted identical 7-1 victories in back-to-back games.
Coming back for night two, the Redbirds next took on the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks in a much closer matchup. Opening the scoring for the Redbirds was the second-year finance major, taking advantage of a powerplay in the opening frame. With back and forth plays throughout the second period, the Redbirds were down by one going into the third. Fighting hard therein, McGill managed to send the game to overtime, where Rouleau capped off his productive two-game stretch by assisting on the game-winning tally..
The St. Basil de Portneuf, Que. product currently sits fifth in OUA scoring with 34 points.
