LONDON, Ont. – Day Two of the OUA Swimming Championship saw Toronto lead the way once again, as the Varsity Blues picked up eight gold medals and a total of 22 podium finishes to increase their lead in both the men's and women's competition.
The Varsity Blues more than doubled their lead from Day One on the women's side, entering the day with 332 points and finishing it with 701. Western and Guelph hold down second and third with 469 and 322 points, respectively.
In men's competition, the top three teams from Day One all held onto their spots. Toronto closed out the day with 684 points, followed by Western with 495.5 and McMaster with 325.
Among the numerous highlights of the day for Toronto was a sweep of the women's 800m Freestyle, as Bridget Coley (8:40.85), Victoria Radounski (8:41.34), and Lisa van Breugel (8:53.64) finished first, second, and third, respectively, to own the podium.
Kylie Masse had another outstanding day for the run-away Varsity Blues, setting a conference record of 2:04.44 in the women's 200m Backstroke before helping the 400m Medley Relay team register another OUA record (4:06.89) to close out her night. Through Day Two, the second-year standout has picked up three golds and three OUA records.
Toronto's men's 400m Medley Relay team also set an OUA record (3:39.54), as did Hochan Ryu (1:58.47) in the men's 200m Individual Medley and Paige Schultz (54.17) in the women's 100m Freestyle. Ryu, who was part of the men's 400m Medley Relay team, also took home gold in the men's 200m Backstroke (1:58.26) to finish the day with three medals.
Jennifer McNaughton and Paulina Bond led the way during a successful day for Western's women's program. McNaughton claimed the first gold of the night in the women's 200m Individual Medley (2:15.67) and Bond set an OUA record in the 50m Butterfly (26.78). Bond also won silver in the 100m Freestyle (54.94) while McNaughton was part of the bronze-winning 400m Medley Relay team (4:13.33).
Western's men's team didn't win a gold on Friday but their performance was strong nonetheless. Alex Bartley (15:42.22) and Ryan Hatch (15:45.57) finished one-two in the 1500m Freestyle, Matthew Loewen (1:02.20) split third-place in the 100m Breaststroke with Queen's Steven Lee, and the 400m Medley Relay team claimed a silver with a time of 3:40.21.
Guelph's Emily Anzai highlighted a strong day for the Gryphon women with a silver medal in the 200m Backstroke (2:11.31). The Gryphons used their depth in talent to carve out a spot in third place ahead of McMaster, who got a bronze from Emma Mittermaier in the women's 100m Freestyle (56.45) and a silver in the women's 400m Medley Relay (4:12.85).
Evan Van Moerkerke was one of two Gryphons to claim gold on Friday night. He came out on top of the 100m Freestyle with a time of 49.19, just behind the 48.94 mark he set in preliminaries to break an OUA record, while Eric Trevisan had the other first-place finish, swimming 24.34 in the men's 50m Butterfly. However, despite not medalling on Friday, it's the McMaster men's team that holds on to third place in men's competition.
While McMaster and Guelph alternated spots in the men's and women's competition, Ottawa came out in fifth on both sides. Audrey Prayal-Brown set an OUA record for the Gee-Gees in the 100m Breaststroke with a time of 1:09.62 while Robert Bonomo added another medal to his two from Day One, finishing second in the men's 200m Backstroke (158.93).
The final day of the OUA Championship kicks off tomorrow with preliminaries at 10:00 a.m. Finals begin an hour earlier than they have through the first two days, as medal competition gets started at 5:00 p.m.
