FEMALE: Kylie Masse (LaSalle, Ont.) – 2nd yr. – Toronto Varsity Blues – Swimming
Kylie Masse (LaSalle, Ont.) dominated at the OUA Swimming Championship this past weekend, leading the University of Toronto Varsity Blues to their third straight OUA banner.
Masse, a second-year kinesiology major, broke at least one OUA championship record in all six sections, including three preliminary and three final sessions, and added two new Canadian records over a dominant three-day meet.
The LaSalle, Ont. native swept the 50m (26.82), 100m (56.55) and 200m (2:04.44) backstroke events, all in OUA record time, including a new Canadian record in both the 50- and 100-metre event.
The 5-foot-8 swimmer also claimed the 100m butterfly (57.84) gold medal in OUA record time and helped Toronto's 200m (1:50.39) and 400m (4:06.89) medley relay teams to first-place finishes in OUA record time.
Following the championship, Masse was named OUA female swimmer of the meet for the second straight year.
Masse and the Varsity Blues will now turn their focus to the 2016 CIS swimming championships, hosted by Laval University on February 26-28.
MALE: Aaron Squires (St. Thomas, Ont.) – 5th yr – Laurier Golden Hawks – Curling
There's a reason why they're called "Golden Hawks."
Laurier Golden Hawks skip Aaron Squires (St. Thomas, Ont.) led his team to a perfect 9-0 record and their second consecutive OUA Curling Championship this past weekend while outscoring their opposition 71-18 in the process.
In the semifinals, Laurier defeated Brock 6-4 setting up the "Battle of Waterloo" with the crosstown rival Warriors. However, it was the Golden Hawks who would take this round, needing just five ends to beat the Warriors 10-1 and claim the gold medal.
Over the course of the championship, the fifth-year communications major shot 90.2 percent and was named an OUA first-team all-star. The 5-foot-10, 160 lbs skip dominated the competition and never had to throw his final rock in any match all tournament.
Squires and the Golden Hawks will have more than a month to prepare for the 2016 CIS/Curling Canada Championships at the Kelowna Curling Club on March 20-23.
