YORK 3, RYERSON 1
TORONTO, Ont. - The Ryerson Rams women's volleyball team put up a good fight Saturday afternoon at Kerr Hall, but the undefeated York Lions proved to be too much, improving their winning streak to 13 with a 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-17, 25-18) victory.
The Rams came out strong in the first set, staking themselves to an 8-6 lead at the first technical time out and a 16-14 lead at the second break. The Lions came out swinging and were able to take advantage of a questionable out of bounds call on a Kasandra Bracken kill to take the set 25-21.
The Rams didn't let the loss deter them as the home side roared out to an 8-4 lead in the second set. The Rams spread the attack with Leah Saar (Ajax, Ont.), Carli Yim (Markham, Ont.) and Lindsay Franco (Oakville, Ont.) all recording points off kills for Ryerson. The Rams nearly let the set slip away as York tied the game at 23 late, but Ryerson's offence came through in the clutch to claim a 25-23 victory. With the win, the Rams became only the fourth team to take a set from the Lions all year.
The setback seemed to awaken the York offence as the visitors would go on to take the final two sets handily. The Lions came out strong in the third, building up a 19-12 lead en route to the 25-17 win. The Rams tried to make things interesting in the fourth, cutting an early deficit to a 20-17 score, but York would pull away to take the match 25-18.
York's offence came from all angles as both Angela Frawley (Sudbury, Ont.) and Candice Paulsen (Scarborough, Ont.) finished with 15 points. The two also combined for 27 kills, while Nadia Reider (Buenos Aires, Argentina) added 46 assists and three aces in the victory. Franco had a strong match for the Rams, posting a game-high 17 points and 14 kills. Bracken (Sherwood Park, Alta.) chipped in with seven kills, while Kaela McDowell (Toronto, Ont.) notched 31 assists.
