OUA W-VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: BENCH LEADS MARAUDERS PAST GRYPHONS
From an individual and team standpoint, the Gryphons' level was not close to its best as Guelph never really threatened in any of the three sets. McMaster was able to play with comfortable leads in the first two sets.
The Gryphons got off to a good start in the third and were ahead 18-13 at one point, but then proceeded to allow McMaster to score 11 straight points to all but put the match away finishing at 25-21.
McMaster's Heidi Bench (St. Catharines, Ont.) had a game-high 12 points (10 kills, 2 blocks). Teammate Larissa Puhach (Burlington, Ont.) contributed 10 points (9 kills, 1 ace).
Claire Sandor (Waterloo, Ont.) was Guelph's top scorer with nine points (6 kills, 1 ace, 2 blocks) followed by Jessica Gaukel (Brantford, Ont.) with seven (6 kills, 1 ace). Guelph finishes the first half with a 6-4 record, tied for third in the tight OUA West Division.
The Gryphons first action of the second half of the season will be on the road in Kingston on Jan. 10 and 11 against RMC and Queens.

OTTAWA, Ont. - Fifth-year leftside/rightside hitter and team captain Veronique Yeon (Ottawa, Ont.) had six kills and five digs Saturday afternoon in the Ottawa Gee-Gees 3-0 home shutout over RMC to end the first-half of the OUA East schedule on a two-match win streak ahead of the December break.
First-year uOttawa setter Sofia Sturova finished with five kills and seven digs in the 25-20, 25-19, 25-23 match, played over 90 minutes.
"I have set for four years, but not at the university level," said Sturova, 18, born in Ukraine and raised in Ottawa from age five. "It is definitely exciting to play."
The Gee-Gees, which are 8-3 in second-place in the OUA East, were without third-year starting transfer setter Tess Edwards (personal) and fourth-year middle Joanie Beauregard-Veillette (back).
Fifth-year leftside hitter Karine Gagnon (Granby, Que.) had 10 kills with 12 digs in Ottawa's 3-1 home win over Queen's on Friday night.
Fifth-year leftside/rightside hitter Ariane Thibault (Rouyn-Noranda, Que.) led the Gee-Gees in the 25-19, 25-21, 21-25, 25-21 match played over 124 minutes with six stuff blocks, including the winning point in the fourth game.
"It felt pretty good," said Thibault. "We have been working on a few things that actually showed up."
"We made smart decisions," added Gee-Gees head coach Lionel Woods. "Then we got it done."
The conference schedule resumes in January.

BROCK 3, RYERSON 0
TORONTO, Ont. - The Brock Badgers women's volleyball team ended the first half of the season with a 3-0 sweep over the Ryerson Rams (25-18, 25-17, 25-15). With two victories this weekend, Brock moves into a three-way tie for third place in the OUA West Division.
Junior Katelyn Giesbrecht (Virgil, Ont.) led the Badgers offence with eight kills. Sophomore Shannon Anderson (Newmarket, Ont.) and junior Alex McKee (Whitby, Ont.) contributed with six kills each while junior Heather Potts (Nepean, Ont.) added five kills in the victory.
The Badgers ended their four-game losing streak Saturday afternoon on the road as they swept the Waterloo Warriors 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 28-26).
The Badgers used a balanced offence as junior Erin Mercer (Rockwood, Ont.) led the way with nine kills. Anderson contributed with eight kills and 14 digs while McKee rounded out the Brock leaders with eight kills. Sophomore Ally Fast (St. Catharines, Ont.) registered 34 assists and six digs.
On defence, senior Kaila Wiley (Mississauga, Ont.) recorded her 1,000th career dig with a 23 dig performance to lead the Badgers. In 222 career games, Wiley has recorded 1,021 career digs averaging 4.6 digs per game.
The Badgers next conference game is scheduled for Jan. 9 on the road versus Toronto before returning home for three straight home games against Lakehead (Jan. 11), Laurier (Jan. 16) and Waterloo (Jan. 17).
