OUA ANNOUNCES 2008 LACROSSE MAJOR AWARD WINNERS AND ALL-STARS
The Queen’s Gaels receive two major awards for Most Valuable Player, sponsored by Harrow Sports Canada. The Most Valuable Offensive Player is given to Lisa McLaughlin (Whitby, Ont.). McLaughlin is second in the league in goals with an outstanding 38.
Ruther McArthur (Brampton, Ont.) is named Most Valuable Defensive Player. McArthur adds this title to last year's accomplishment of Most Sportsmanlike Player.
The Rookie of the Year award goes to McMaster Marauder Jackie Heaton (Peterborough, Ont.). Heaton has posted 35 goals this season, along with five assists. The award is sponsored by T. Litzen Sports.
Jen Held (Brampton, Ont.) from the Toronto Varsity Blues is this season's Most Sportsmanlike Player and a Second Team All-Star. She has 18 goals and 21 assists through seven games played.
Western Mustangs rookie head coach Dave Hastings is named Coach of the Year. Hastings led the Mustangs to a 7-5 winning season inheriting a team with a lot of new faces. A former men's field lacrosse player at Western, he will coach in the OUA semi-finals, hoping to advance to the gold medal game.
Joining McLaughlin and McArthur as First Team All-Stars are Kirsten Gerrie (Orillia, Ont.), Heather McHardy (Whitby, Ont.), Amy Fincham (Whitby, Ont.) and Britt Boynton (Orillia, Ont.) from the undefeated Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. Tory Merrill (Orangeville, Ont.) is honoured from the Toronto Varsity Blues, and Western's goaltender Andrea McLaughlin (Oakville, Ont.) rounds off the list.
Making up the Second Team All-Stars are Western's Larissa Boychuk (Mississauga, Ont.), Nicole Pullen (Orangeville, Ont.) and Laura Robinson (Peterborough, Ont.), Held and Yoko Murphy (Toronto, Ont.) from Toronto Varsity Blues, McMaster's Heaton, and Kelly Bedore (Orangeville, Ont.) and Hanna Burnett (Whitby, Ont.) from Wilfrid Laurier.
