OUA ANNOUNCES MAJOR LACROSSE AWARDS AND ALL-STARS
Hamilton, ON - The Queen's Golden Gaels had a fantastic regular season, finishing first in the OUA East division with a 9 - 1 record. A number of Gaels have been recognized by the leagues coaches as the best in the OUA, earning five major awards and six all-star nods. The 3-time defending OUA Champion Laurier Golden Hawks along with McGill and Guelph had 3 players each named to the all-star squads.
Fourth year Commerce student Faye Pang (Mississauga, ON) was a major force for the Golden Gaels, leading the team in scoring with 24 goals and 1 assist. Pang's offensive leadership earned her the leagues Most Valuable Offensive Player award and the Outstanding Graduating Player award. Queen's teammate Catherine (Ruth) McArthur (Brampton, ON) was awarded for her effort and leadership on defense, named the leagues' Most Valuable Defensive Player. McArthur was assisted in her efforts thanks to goaltender Alexis Maddaloni (St. Catharines, ON). Maddaloni, who allowed a league low 43 goals, and was named the OUA's Most Valuable Goaltender. Laura Chambers (Toronto, ON), made an immediate impact for the Golden Gaels in her rookie season, scoring 23 goals and adding 1 assist to earn Rookie of the Year honours.
Varsity Blues rookie Yoko Murphy (Toronto, ON) was named the leagues Most Sportsmanlike Player, while McGill's Rosy Madden (Sheldon, VT) earned the Spirit Award. Heather Roffey was named Coach of the Year after leading her McGill Martlets team to a 6 - 4 record.
Queen's Kaleigh Ross (Newton, MA) was recognized as a first team all-star along with Pang, McArthur and Maddaloni, while attacker Martha Ross (Newton, MA) joined Chambers on the second team. Top seeded Laurier's Kirsten Gerrie (Orillia, ON), the lead leader in points with 33 goals and 21 assists, was named first team OUA all-star along with Mid-fielder Erica Howard (Kitchener, ON) and Defender Lisa Fotopoulos (Kitchener, ON).
Madden, a second team all-star was joined by fellow Martlets first team all-star Claire Maturo (Ann Arbor, MI) and second team all-star Dani Scarola (Chester, NJ).
Mustangs Melissa Kandola (Mississauga, ON) and Erin Abel (Ailsa Craig, ON), as well as, Gryphon Ali Maitland (Lakefield, ON) and Varsity Blues mid-fielder Tory Merrill (Orangeville, ON) were named first team all-stars.
The OUA Rookie of the Year will receive a gift courtesy of T. Litzen Sports in recognition of their accomplishment.
