CHAMBERS'S HOT HAND LEADS UNBEATEN GAELS
Thanks to a 10-goal weekend from standout rookie Laura Chambers, the Queen's Golden Gaels have a stranglehold on the OUA East after winning three straight to improve their record to 8-0-0 for 16 points, six ahead of second-place McGill. Queen's dominated the Martlets in their meeting Saturday as Chambers scored five times with an assist to pace the Gaels. Faye Pang and Carley Miller each added hat-tricks in the win, while Claire Maturo led McGill with four goals. Chambers continued her hot hand Saturday by registering another hat-trick in a 6-2 win over the McMaster Marauders. Amber Darroch and Andrea Jones replied for the Marauders. Chambers added another two in Sunday's 9-5 win over the Varsity Blues but it was Pang who shone in this one, scoring five times to bring her season tally to 21 goals, tying her with Chambers for the OUA lead in goals. Jen Held and Victoria Merrill had two each for Toronto.
The loss to Queen's was the only blemish of the week for the Blues, who overpowered the Marauders 14-3 and the Martlets 13-9 in two matches Saturday. Merrill led the way with five goals and an assist in the McMaster win, while Held was solid with three goals and an assist. Katie Godfrey added two goals and two assists for Toronto. Yoko Murphy was the go-to player in the meeting with McGill, as the first-year mid from Toronto exploded for five goals and three assists. Held scored another four, bringing her season total to 20 goals, while
Deanna Merkeley scored two goals and chipped in an assist.
The three-time defending champion Laurier Golden Hawks responded from a rare loss last week to upend the Guelph Gryphons 12-5 Sunday. Kirsten Gerrie, Leanne Nicholls and Jessica Ilott each scored twice to pace the Hawks, while Heather Mchardy played a big role on offence with four assists. Ali Maitland had three goals for the Gryphons. Guelph rebounded with an 11-9 win over western laster in the day, thanks to a four-goal effort from Stacey Fuderer and a hat-trick from Kate Curtis. Yolanda Lloyd and Lauren Wedlock rounded out the scoring for Guelph, notching two goals each. Melissa Kandola replied with three for Western giving her 18 goals on the season.
Western did pull out a 10-8 win over the Brock Badgers Sunday on the heels of an impressive five-goal outburst from Taryn Wagner. Katy Renaud added a goal and two assists. Lisa Zatylny and Heidi Krasnozon had two goals and an assist each for Brock.
