HAWKS AND GAELS KICK OFF SEASON IN STYLE
Last year's OUA lacrosse championship went down to the wire with the two best teams in the league producing a stirring final. The Laurier Golden Hawks captured a third straight title with a dramatic 8-7 overtime win against their closest competition all year long, the Queen's Golden Gaels. The two lacrosse powers could be headed towards another clash based on the first weekend of OUA action in 2006 - both went 3-0, producing double-digit goal totals in each of their three wins.
Laurier's Erica Howard, Kirsten Gerrie, Amy Fincham and Jenna McCouberry each scored twice as the Hawks began their quest for a four-peat with a 13-8 win over the host Brock Badgers in the opening match Saturday. Katelyn Gardner scored three for the Badgers, while Brock star Heidi Krasnozon added a pair. Gerrie led the way in game two with four goals as Laurier defeated Guelph 10-6 to improve to 2-0. Howard and Leanne Nicholls scored twice each, while Hollis Murphy and Ali Maitland each had a pair for the Gryphons. On Sunday, Laurier took it to the Western Mustangs, tallying a weekend-high goal total in a 16-9 rout. McCouberry and Finchan scored four each in the big win, with Howard scoring three and Gerrie adding two more. Melissa Kandola and Katy Renaud provided the bulk of the Western offence with four goals each in the loss.
Queen's began the 2006 campaign with a decisive 11-2 win over McMaster as Laura Chambers and Carley Miller started strong with two goal each. Chambers added three more in a big 14-7 victory over the Varsity Blues in the Gaels second match Saturday, with Martha Ross also notching three in the win. Rosemary Gibson stood out for the Blues, tallying three of her team's seven goals in the match. Queen's made it three straight wins out of the gate with an 11-2 win over the McGill Martlets Sunday. Ross scored three for the second consecutive game, while fourth-year veteran Faye Pang earned her first three goals of the season. Blair Adam had both of McGill's goals.
The Martlets and Mustangs sit a game behind the two OUA leaders. McGill defeated McMaster 10-2 in their opener thanks to three goals from Claire Maturo, and followed that performance with a tight 7-5 win over the Varsity Blues before going down to Queen's. Maturo had another three in the Toronto win and Adam added a pair. Katie Godfrey and Jennifer held scored twice each for the Blues.
Western dumped Brock 6-4 in the Mustangs opener, courtesy of four goals by OUA rookie Taryn Wagar. Krasnozon scored twice for the Badgers. After losing to the Hawks, Western responded with a 9-6 win against Guelph. Kandola scored four times to help the Mustangs finish 2-1 after the first week of action. Maitland scored three more in a losing cause for the Gryphons. Guelph did pull out one win in their three matches as they beat Brock 11-8 Sunday. Maitland did most of the damage with another four goals, while Yolanda Lloyd added three for the Gryphs. Katie Wilson paced Brock with two goals.
Kristen Butron scored four times and Erin Bourns added three more as the Marauders defeated Toronto 8-5 for Mac's first win of the season.
Guelph's Maitland and Western's Kandola lead the league with nine goals each, with Laurier's Gerrie, last season's goal leader (tied at 28 with two other players), just one behind at eight. Laurier and McGill host matches next weekend.
