Crew sets two meet records at York Open
York University Lions track and field standout Brittany Crew set meet records in both the shot put and weight throw events en route to gold medals in both at the 44th York Open on Saturday (Jan. 31) at the Toronto Track and Field Centre.
Crew's two golds were part of seven medals won by the Lions at their home meet.
She began her day with three personal-best throws in the weight throw, including the winning distance of 18.18 metres that was 1.22 metres better than her previous best. The mark was 54 centimetres better than the previous meet record and also qualified her for the CIS championships later this season.
Later in the day, she recorded a 15.73-metre throw in the shot put, eclipsing the meet record she set last year by 22 centimetres and winning the event by more than a full metre over the silver medallist.
Also winning two medals at the York Open was Bismark Boateng (Brampton, Ont.). He captured the silver in the 60m with a time of 6.85 seconds and added a bronze medal in the 300m in a time of 35.24 seconds.
Joining him on the 300m podium was Ayo Agusto (Toronto), who won the silver with a time of 34.82 seconds.
Agusto also helped the Lions 4x200m relay team win the gold medal in their event. He ran the second leg and was joined in the race by Xavier Jehovah (Toronto), Jalen Pidlubny (Scarborough, Ont.) and Jameel Brown (Brampton, Ont.).
Rounding out the podium finishes was a trio of silver medals in the field. David McKay (Victoria) finished second in the pole vault with a height of 5.03 metres, which also qualified him for the CIS championships, Chris Preece (Cookstown, Ont.) finished second in the weight throw with a personal-best distance of 17.86 metres and Eric Brathwaite (Brampton, Ont.) won silver in the shot put with a throw of 16.36 metres.
Some members of the team will be heading to Akron, Ohio, next weekend to compete at the Akron Invitational, and the Lions will return to OUA competition on Feb. 13 with the Windsor Team Challenge in Windsor, Ont.
