Gryphons win 11 events at Fred Foot Classic
Toronto, Ont. - University of Guelph track and field athletes won 11 events at this Saturday's (Jan. 17) Fred Foot Classic. Headlining the wins was Ross Proudfoot, who dominated the men's 1500 metres winning in a time of 3 minutes 48.64 seconds, the top time in the CIS this year. The Gryphons also scored wins in the men's and women's 60 metres with Kristian Benjamin winning the men's race in 7.02 and Simone Mallett-Forde winning the women's in 7.93. Emily Bowerman and Jackson Cheung swept the 60 hurdle races, Bowerman taking the women's in 9.11 seconds, with Cheung winning the men's in 8.44. The Gryphons also swept the long jump titles with Celina Decarlois taking the women's in 5.33 metres and Mitchell Torres winning the men's in 6.64 metres, Torres added another win in the men's high jump with a best jump of 1.96 metres. Other Gryphon winners were Tommy Land (men's 600 metres), Nick Holden (men's 1000 metres) and Mikaela Vandenheuvel (women's triple jump). The Gryphons are back in action this weekend at the McGill Team Challenge in Montreal, Quebec and the New Balance Games in New York City, NY.

Fred Foot Classic Results (Varsity Blues)
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues track and field team hosted their annual Fred Foot Classic, January 16-17, at the Athletic Centre Field House.
Leading Toronto's women were Katia Vasilyeva, Jenna Kelsall and Ekua Cudjoe with first-place finishes in the high jump, pole vault and weight throw events.
Brittany Salmon placed second behind Kelsall in the women's pole vault, while other second-place finishes came from Jessica Caterini in the 60m hurdles, Kelly Hennessy in the 3000m and Julia Stille in long jump.
Chisomo McHaina, Carolyn Adams and each placed third in 60m, 60m hurdles and 300m sprint races.
In men's action, Marc McGuire and Alex Lau led the Blues with top finishes in the triple jump and 300m events, respectively.
Bashir Khan placed second in the high jump and third in the triple jump, while Adam Karakolis was second in the weight throw and third in shot put.
Emil Larsson placed second in the pole vault, with Brian Li and James Turner earning third-place finishes in the 60m hurdles and high jump competitions.

York Penathletes shine at Fred Foot Classic
Pentathletes on the York University Lions track and field team competed at their first meet of the season this weekend at the Fred Foot Memorial Meet at the University of Toronto, with all three of them setting new personal-best marks.
Justin Massar (Anten Mills, Ont.) finished sixth in the men's event with 3402 points, which qualifies him for the OUA championships. He set personal-best marks in the 60m hurdles (8.90 seconds) and the high jump (1.88 metres), and also surpassed the OUA standard in those two events, as well as the long jump and shot put.
In the women's event, Tracey Edwards (Ottawa) and Alix Mahood (Toronto) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, with personal-best point totals that also qualified them for the OUA championships.
Edwards had a strong competition with new personal bests in the high jump (1.39 metres), shot put (7.87 metres), long jump (4.72 metres) and 800m (2:45.87). Mahood also recorded a pair of personal bests in the shot put (8.61 metres) and the 800m (2:50.48).
In other events, the Lions swept the podium in the shot put with Brittany Crew (East York, Ont.) winning gold, Jacinta Cowan (Bala, Ont.) claiming silver and Fatim Ammor () taking bronze. The trio nearly turned the same trick in the weight throw as Crew won silver, Cowan captured the bronze and Ammor finished in fourth place.
In the men's throwing events, Chris Preece (Cookstown, Ont.) won the gold medal in the weight throw with a distance of 16.98 metres, and Anojan Sivalingam (Scarborough, Ont.) finished third at 14.96 metres.
The Lions will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Montreal for the McGill Team Challenge, which begins on Friday, Jan. 23.
