M-BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Ravens end Rams perfect season
York 72 @ Queen’s 92
KINGSTON, Ont. (January 10, 2013) – The Queen's Gaels (8-3) men's basketball team cruised past the York Lions (4-7), after posting a thirteen point deferential in the first quarter. Rookie guard Roshane Roberts (Vaughn, Ont.) was the team leader in points, posting a season high 23. The Gaels are 2-1 since the New Year, and 8-3 in OUA play, currently sit fourth place in a very strong OUA East conference.
Queen's wasted no time putting points on the board, and got ahead of York early in the game. After going up 31-18 after one, the Gaels continued their dominance at both ends of the court—recording 10 steals, and a 43% shooting percentage from the field at half. Kingston native Greg Faulkner was impressive for the Gaels in the first half shooting 60% from beyond the arc, and nabbing six rebounds.
The second half featured more even play, with both teams exchanging baskets. The Queen's bench saw increased minutes with rookie guard Cy Samuels (Vaughn, Ont.) contributing six points and a game high four assists. Halfway through the third quarter the Gaels held their largest lead of the game at 27 points, managing to close out the quarter leading 70-48.
In the final frame, York was able to keep the Gaels scoring at bay, and finished the quarter out-scoring the Gaels 24-22. Queen's dominance throughout the game, allowed them to build an insurmountable lead rather early that York could not climb back from.
The Queen's Gaels men's basketball team looks to continue tallying victories, as they host the Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday night. Tip-off is set for 8pm in the ARC Main Gym.

Ottawa 71 @ Ryerson 76
TORONTO - In front of another packed house at the Mattamy Athletic Centre, the No. 7 nationally ranked Ryerson Rams men's basketball team won an important game over the visiting No. 10 Ottawa Gee-Gees by a score of 76-71 on Friday night.
The guard combination of Aaron Best (Scarborough, Ont.) and Jahmal Jones (Mississauga, Ont.) led the Rams to victory, combining for 53 points on the night.
The Gee-Gees jumped out to an 18-12 lead after one quarter, thanks to a pair of desperation three pointers as the shot clock expired. Both Warren Ward (London, Ont.) and Johnny Berhanemeskel (Ottawa, Ont.) banked home their long range attempts to help give Ottawa the lead.
Ryerson responded in the second, taking the lead late in the frame after back to back jumpers from Jordon Gauthier (Windsor, Ont.). A Vikas Gill (Stittsville, Ont.) three pointer knotted the score at 35-35 and Ottawa then took the lead as a buzzer beater from half court from Berhanemeskel rattled home to lift the Gee-Gees to a 38-35 halftime advantage.
Aaron Best scored 12 of his game-high 27 points in the third quarter alone as Ryerson stormed out of the break. The Rams played a more up-tempo game in the third, forcing turnovers and getting out in transition to outscore Ottawa 22-14 and hold a 57-52 lead heading into the fourth.
The third quarter was the turning point of the game and head coach Roy Rana knew it was important to come out of the dressing room strong.
"I thought we came out flat in the first half - we didn't have great effort or great energy. Our assistant coach Patrick Tatham gave them some good words in the locker room that they needed to hear and I thought we responded and came out and played well", said head coach Roy Rana following the game.
The Rams extended their lead to eight points with just under five minutes remaining in the game but the Gee-Gees continued to climb back and cut the deficit to three in the span of one minute.
Ryerson scored consecutive buckets off turnovers to restore the lead to eight at 71-63 with 2:50 remaining and then closed out the victory from the free throw line. Despite shooting just 62.9% from the line for the game, the Rams converted 22 free throws which was seven more than Ottawa even attempted.
Vikas Gill hit an uncontested three pointer at the end of the game for the Gee-Gees to round out the scoring at 76-71 in favour of the home team.
Berhanemeskel led the Gee-Gees with a team-high 19 points and collected a team-high six rebounds while Ward finished with 14 points on the night.
The combination of Best and Jones gave the home town crowd plenty to cheer about and coach Rana is appreciative of the support his team has been getting so far this season.
"That's one of the things I'm most pleased about, that we get a chance to have a great crowd behind us every night that helps us compete."
The victory pushes Ryerson's record to 10-0 and they remain atop the OUA east division standings while Ottawa drops to 9-2 on the year and now sit in third place.
The Rams return to the court for another tough game on Saturday as they host the country's top ranked team in the Carleton Ravens. Tipoff is set for 8:00 p.m.

Carleton 91 @ Toronto 57
The Varsity Blues men’s basketball team dropped a 91-57 decision to the No. 1 Carleton Ravens on Friday, January 11 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
Carleton (10-1) remains tied with the Ryerson Rams (10-0) for first place as the two teams square off tomorrow night at Mattamy Athletic Centre. The Blues drop to 2-8 and sit in seventh place in the East division.
The loss marks Toronto's ninth straight to Carleton. The Blues last topped the Ravens on Feb. 1, 2008, 94-73. Carleton holds a 54-32 head-to-head record over U of T since their first meeting in 1971.
Third-year Ravens guard Phillip Scrubb (Richmond, B.C.) led all players with 26 points, going 6-for-12 from beyond the arc. His brother, Thomas, added 16 points and seven rebounds, while Dan Penner had 10 points and seven boards in the win.
Alex Hill led the Blues on the night. The Toronto native notched 19 points, six assists and five rebounds, while Dakota Laurin (Calgary) added 11 points and eight boards in the loss.
The Ravens dominated from the get-go, building a 20-7 lead after the first and taking a 46-25 advantage into halftime. The second half saw much of the same, as Carleton maintained a comfortable 20-point gap throughout the remainder of the game.
The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow night as they host the Ottawa Gee-Gees (8-3) at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Brock 65 @ Lakehead 81
The men's basketball team came away with a win over the Brock Badgers, 81-65 on Friday evening.
Battling against a tough and sizeable Badgers lineup, the T-Wolves were able to scratch out a win thanks to some timely outside shooting (10-23 from 3-pt). Enjoying a 17-point cushion at halftime (46-29), Lakehead seemed to be in control of the game. In the third quarter Brock was able to close the gap to 9, but would get no closer. Despite being plagued by turnovers against an athletic Badger backcourt, the T-Wolves battled through, compensating by creating turnovers of their own on defense.
Greg Carter led the Wolves with 20 points, 7 rebounds, 6 steals and 4 assists. Ryan Thomson put in 14 (3-5 from three) with 5 rebounds. Senior post Yoosrie Salhia finished with 10 points and 7 rebounds and 5 assists.
Top scorer for Brock was Jameson Tipping with 18 points and 5 rebounds. Tshing Kasamba had 14 points in the loss, while Mark Gibson put in 10 points with 6 rebounds and 3 assists.
Lakehead out-rebounded Brock 35-29, and made 17 assists to the Badgers' 9 helpers.
Coach Scott Morrison:
"A win is always better than a loss but tonight we would be trying to fool ourselves if we thought we did not get lucky. Our execution and ball control were terrible to the tune of 26 turnovers and 18 fast break points for Brock. Had Brocks connected on a few more three pointers the results may have been much different- we have a lot of work to do and must come to the gym tomorrow accepting nothing less than executing our game plan."
The teams rematch tomorrow evening at 8 pm.

Western 62 @ McMaster 86
It was Shoot for the Cure day at McMaster, and the Marauder men’s basketball team was feeling in the pink after defeating the Western Mustangs 86-62 on Saturday afternoon.
McMaster came out flying to start the game, scoring the first eight points before Western called a time-out to slow the Mac momentum. Finding their leading scorer Peter Scholtes for some easy scores got the Mustangs back into the game and by the end of the quarter, McMaster was on top 19-15.
Western continued to play well in the second quarter, and McMaster, playing without injured guard Adam Presutti, struggled to find its rhythm. The Mustangs controlled the tempo for most of the second stanza and by halftime, Mac only held a 31-29 advantage.
Coming out for the third quarter, the Marauders stepped up the intensity and a 7-0 run early in the quarter created a cushion that the team carried for the rest of the period. By the end of the third, McMaster had extended the lead to 58-47.
Sensing a dip in Western spirits, McMaster continued to apply pressure to start the fourth quarter and saw the lead grow to 72-52 with six minutes left. Western tried to stop the bleeding but the Marauders found open shooters and allowed the Mustangs very few second-chance scoring opportunities before both teams cleared their benches to end the game, with Mac winning 86-62.
Top shooter for the Marauders was Joe Rocca, who dropped a tidy 19 on six of ten shooting. Nate Pelech just missed a double-double with 16 and nine rebounds and was named the BIG MAC player of the game. Other strong Maroon efforts came from Rohan Boney with 14 points and Taylor Black with 13. McMaster crushed the smaller Mustangs in the battle of the boards by 48-22.
With its win streak up to four, McMaster improves to 6 and 5 in the OUA West. Next challenge for the Maroon is a home game versus first-place Windsor on Wednesday, January 16th at 8 p.m.

Guelph 94 @ Laurier 88
WATERLOO, Ont. (January 12, 2013) - Coming off a giant upset win over the No. 8 Windsor Lancers on Wednesday night, the Laurier men's basketball team failed to capitalize on their momentum Saturday afternoon as the Guelph Gryphons rode a strong first half performance to a 94-88 victory.
However, the day was not without highlights for the Hawks as Maxwell Allin of Chatham, Ont., scored a career-high and record-breaking 43 points in the loss for the Hawks.
Guelph came out on fire in the first quarter as they jumped out to a 26-20 lead. The Gryphons extended their lead in the second frame, outscoring the Hawks 28-21 to jump out to a 54-41 lead going into the second half. With the score 7 6-63 heading into the final quarter, the Golden Hawks finally found their offensive touch, with Allin leading the attack. The Hawks outscored Guelph 25-18 in the final quarter, but their comeback fell just short. The 94-88 loss drops the Hawks to 3-8 in conference play while the Gryphons move to 4-7
Guelph's attack was led by Dan McCarthy of Guelph, Ont., and Zachary Angus of Burlington, Ont., who combined for over half of the Gryphons points. Angus had four steals in addition to his 26 points, while McCarthy had six assists and rebounds to go along with his 27 points.
Allin's 43 points were in large part thanks to his six three-pointers, and 11 free throws made. He also set the modern day record for points in a single game, just a week after teammate William Coulthard of Oakville, Ont., had matched the previous record.
Jamar Forde of Mississauga, Ont. contributed 15 points while the aforementioned Coulthard chipped in with 14.
The Hawks next game will come Wednesday night against the Waterloo Warriors (1-9). Game time is 8 p.m.

Laurentian 82 @ Queen’s 84
KINGSTON, Ont. (January 12, 2013) - Greg Faulkner (Kingston, Ont.) and Sukhpreet Singh (Toronto) both made key buckets to close out the game as the Gaels (9-3) edged the Laurentian Voyageurs (5-6) 84-82. Faulkner led all scorers with 24 points in the game and scored eight of the Gaels final 11 points to secure the win.
Laurentian wasted no time opening up a 7-3 lead thanks to the sharpshooting Manny Pasquale (Victoria) who nailed a three-point shot early on. The Gaels responded with a 10-0 run to get out in front, Nikola Misljencevic (Ottawa) nabbed back-to-back layups to keep the run moving for Queen's. After trading buckets, the Gaels finished the first quarter in front 17-15.
An 8-2 run to open the second quarter put the Gaels up 25-18, Queen's benefitted from strong defensive plays hauling in their rebounds and forcing Voyageur turnovers to keep the momentum in their favour. Laurentian kept the Gaels in check as they finished out the first half with just a one point advantage, 35-34.
In the third, Laurentian opened up their biggest lead of the game up by 10 points at one point over Queen's after Pasquale completed a four point play. The Gaels cut into the Voyageur lead, but trailed after three by five points 64-59.
Faulkner and Singh both played key roles for the Gaels in the fourth as they battled to keep Laurentian at bay. Trailing 77-73 with just over four minutes remaining Faulkner erupted the gym, nailing down eight straight points including back-to-back three pointers for the Gaels. Singh chipped in with the assists on all three Faulkner buckets then sealed the win with a steal followed by a hoop and harm three point play. Queen's came away with the victory in a close game 84-82.
The Gaels will now travel to Ottawa on Friday where they will take on the Gee-Gees.

Carleton 91 @ Ryerson 66
TORONTO - The No. 7 nationally ranked Ryerson Rams men's basketball team suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday evening, falling to the No. 1 ranked Carleton Ravens by a score of 91-66.
The win leaves Carleton alone at the top of the OUA east division standings with an 11-1 record while Ryerson now sits second at 10-1.
Forward Tyson Hinz (Ottawa, Ont.) had a game-high 24 points, 20 of which came in the second half, to lead the Ravens to victory.
Ryerson guard Jordon Gauthier (Windsor, Ont.) had a strong start to the game, scoring the first seven points for the Rams to lift the home team to a 7-2 lead in the early going. Carleton's Dan Penner (Winnipeg, Man.) kept the Ravens close before the Scrubb brothers (Thomas and Phil) hit back to back three pointers to open up a 12 point advantage.
The Rams closed the quarter on a 6-2 run but trailed 27-18 after the first quarter.
Ryerson's Bjorn Michaelsen (Otterburn Park, Que.) went to work in the second quarter, helping the Rams open the frame on an 8-2 run and close the gap to just three points at 29-26 with 5:55 remaining. Another Michaelsen basket with 2:10 to go got the Rams within one, trailing 34-33, but that was as close as Ryerson would come.
Carleton put an end to Ryerson's up-tempo second quarter pace by initiating contact at the offensive end and drawing fouls. The Ravens closed the first half with six straight points from the free throw line and held a 40-33 advantage at halftime.
Fans of the Rams are accustomed to seeing their squad come out of the locker room after the break with energy and dominate their opponents, but that cannot be said on this night.
The Ravens outscored Ryerson 29-19 in the third quarter, pushing a seven point halftime lead to a commanding 17 point advantage heading into the final frame.
The Ryerson faithful who packed into Coca-Cola Court for the second straight night could not spur their Rams to a comeback as the Ravens piled on the points and finished the game up by 25 when the buzzer sounded.
Phil Scrubb (Richmond, B.C.) finished the game with 21 points while brother Thomas had 19 and a game-high seven rebounds and Dan Penner added 12 points.
Carleton showed an efficient offence, shooting 56.7 percent from the floor (34-for-60) and 47.1 percent (8-for-17) from three point range. The Ravens also outrebounded the Rams 38-22.
Jordon Gauthier and Aaron Best (Scarborough, Ont.) both finished with a team-high 15 points and five rebounds on the night. Michaelsen tallied 14 points while Jahmal Jones (Mississauga, Ont.) finished with 12.
The Rams shot just 3-for-24 from behind the arc on the night but head coach Roy Rana wasn't concerned with that statistic.
"You just have to take what they give you and we had open looks and we just didn't make them. It was that kind of night. Even if we make five more, it's a different game", said Rana.
Ryerson freshmen Matthew Beckford (Etobicoke, Ont.) and Juwon Grannum (Mississauga, Ont.) drew big defensive assignments, trying to limit former CIS player of the year Tyson Hinz.
"That's what it's all about though, you have to give the young guys a shot. Hopefully it will prepare them for down the road when the games become even bigger", said Rana.
The Rams will get back to the basics in practice this week, focusing on the defensive end as well as executing offensive sets.
Ryerson returns to the court next week when they travel to Sudbury to take on the Laurentian Voyageurs on Friday, January 18 at 8:00 p.m. The Rams will then return to Toronto to take on the York Lions at the Tait Mackenzie Centre on Saturday, January 19 at 8:00 p.m.

Ottawa 92 @ Toronto 75
Arun Kumar knocked down 27 points as the Varsity Blues men’s basketball team fell 92-75 to the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday, January 12 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
Ottawa (10-1) improves their head-to-head record to 46-44 over Toronto since 1971 and are now tied with Ryerson (10-1) for second place in the OUA East division.
Kumar (Hamilton, Ont.) went 4-for-7 from beyond the arc en route to his game-high tally. Holland Landing, Ont., native Ben Garvin added 17 points, while Alex Hill had 15 in the loss.
The Gee-Gees built an early 9-4 lead but a Toronto 10-5 streak evened the game at 14-14. Ottawa held a 21-20 lead after the first quarter. The two teams traded the lead to start the second, but the Gee-Gees surged ahead and were up 43-35 at halftime.
Ottawa continued to control the game and led by 10 (66-56) heading into the fourth quarter. The Blues brought the game within six (71-65) with 6:47 remaining, but the Gee-Gees restored their cushion en route to the win.

Brock 70 @ Lakehead 67
The men's basketball team were handed their second loss on home court this season, 70-67 to the Brock Badgers.
The Badgers were under the skin of the T-Wolves from the get-go, jumping out to a 19-15 lead after 10 minutes, and running them off the court in the second quarter, 23-12 to lead by 15 at the break (42-27). Lakehead's shooting was way off in the first half, connecting on only 1 of 14 long range attempts. They did pick it up in the second half, hitting 3 of 12, but their poor shooting was compounded by their lack of hustle on the glass. Brock out-rebounded Lakehead 45-30, with 15 offensive boards.
Things looked bleak for the home side early in the 3rd quarter as Brock's continued presence on the glass put the 'Wolves in a hole, with the Badgers up by 19 early in the Q.
Lakehead would battle back, but never gain the lead. With some desperate plays and fortunate bounces in the final minute, Lakehead would fight back to 69-67, but with their next-to-final possession a Joe Hart three pointer clanged off the rim. Brock's Mike Luby claimed the rebound and would hit one of two free throws for a three point lead with .9 seconds remaining, and a half court heave from Ryan Thomson was off the mark to force overtime.
Thomson led the Pack with 16 points, while Salhia was his usual double-double self with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Joseph Jones came off the bench to score 14 points in 27 minutes of work before fouling out late in the game.
For the Badgers, Jameson Tipping was once again the leading scorer with 17 points and 13 rebounds (4 offensive), followed by Brian Nahimana with an efficient 15 points (6-8 FG) and 10 rebounds.
Lakehead shot 4-26 (15%) from long range and 19-61 (31%) from the field.
Coach Scott Morrison:
"This morning in our pregame prep I told the team that this Brock team did not quit last night and would be coming out hard. The keys were getting a solid start on the defensive end and being willing to battle physically on the glass against a bigger lineup. By half-time it seemed that both of these suggestions fell on deaf ears as our defense started the game flat footed and mute while our rebounding effort was almost non-existent. By the time our guys woke up to end the 3rd quarter the damage had been done. Our shooting was pitiful but at the end of the day it was the least reason for our loss - it came down to getting beat up on the glass and not executing on either end for the first 30 minutes."
The men are on the road next weekend in London, to take on the Western Mustangs.

Waterloo 58 @ Windsor 85
WINDSOR, Ont.- Enrico Diloreto had a game-high of 18 points, helping the Windsor Lancers men's basketball team cruise to an 85-58 victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday afternoon at the St. Denis Centre.
The victory gives Windsor (8-3) a two-game cushion for top spot in the OUA West division, while the Warriors drop to 1-10 on the year. Josh Collins, Lien Phillip and Michael Godfrey each picked up 11 points in the victory, while Brendan Smith and Wells Davis dropped 11 in a losing cause for Waterloo.
After the visitors knocked down two straight three-pointers in the opening minute, the Lancers responded with 10 straight points to take an early lead. The scoring remained low through the first few minutes of the contest, and the Warriors grabbed back the advantage on a three-point play by Smith. Both defenses flexed their muscles throughout the quarter, and some shooting struggles on either ends of the court led to a low-scoring period, with Windsor holding a 15-14 lead after 10 minutes of play.
Some quick points from the home side to open the second prompted a timeout from Warriors coach Greg Francis. The Lancers continued to the full-court pressure, forcing turnovers from the visitors and spreading the lead to nine. A three from Josh Collins made the score 30-16 for Windsor, while the Warriors continued to struggle offensively, dropping just two points in the opening five minutes of the second.
A three from Zach Angelini at the 2:50 mark snapped a pointless drought of over six minutes for the Warriors. However, they would go on to score just nine points in the period, allowing the Lancers to take a 44-23 lead into halftime. Enrico Diloreto tallied a half-high of 11 points, while Davis grabbed nine points to lead the Warriors.
The London, Ont. native picked up a long-ranger near the end of the third quarter to further extend Windsor's advantage, as the Lancers created a near 30 point deficit by the end of the period. Windsor stepped up their defence again in the final stanza, holding Waterloo to just two points midway through the fourth en route to their eighth win of the year.
Windsor shot 45.7% from the field, compared to 39.3% from Waterloo, and outrebounded the Warriors 46-32.
The Lancers will head to McMaster and Guelph next week for games against the Marauders and Gryphons on Wednesday and Saturday respectively. They are back at the St. Denis Centre on Wednesday, January 23 for a rematch with the Marauders.
