M-BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Laurier upsets No. 8 Windsor
The Guelph Gryphons men's basketball team dropped to 3-7 with a 97-67 loss to the visiting McMaster Marauders tonight (Jan. 9) at the W.F. Mitchell Centre. The win boosts the Marauders ahead of the Gryphons to a 5-5 record in the OUA west. Zach Angus (Burlington, Ont) led the Gryphon offence with 17 points on the night and was followed by Dan McCarthy (Guelph, Ont) who contributed 11 of his own.
McMaster’s Aaron Redpath (Ajax, Ont) led all scorers with 21 points including four three pointers on six attempts.
To open the first quarter Guelph’s Trevor Thompson (Burlington, Ont) was the first to strike for two followed closely behind by Dan McCarthy from three to establish early control of the ball. McMaster responded with a quick three from Aaron Redpath to close the gap, only to have it re-opened as Zach Angus stepped up for three to regain a five-point lead. With each team swapping attacks from the arc, it became a matter of defensive control to build a consistent lead. As the clock wound down, the Marauders solidified a defensive wall under the net to keep the Gryphon attack at bay to pull ahead by five as the quarter wound down at 22-17.
Adam Kemp (St. Catherines, Ont) provided the revitalizing basket for the Gryphons with a strong attack in the Marauders' paint to open the second quarter. But the Gryphon defence was unable to stop the Marauder offence who opened a barrage from three-point land, led by Redpath who drained three in the second to maintain an 80% average from three in the first half. Under Redpath's example, the Marauders opened a 13-point streak to jump ahead 47-27 with two minutes left in the half. Despite a strong offensive burst from Angus, the Mauraders were able to hold onto a 52-33 lead as the half rang out.
Dan McCarthy led the Gryphon offensive effort at the half with nine points, followed closely behind by Zach Angus with eight. Aaron Redpath led all scorers at half with 16 points to boost the Marauder's offence.
Scott Laws (Gormley, Ont) continued the Marauders attack from three to establish the tempo of the third. Zach Angus dropped a quick three to temporarily halt the McMaster offence as he launched his own streak of nine in an effort to reign in the Marauder momentum. However, his efforts were short-lived as the Marauders regained control of the ball to establish a 14-point streak to outshoot the Gryphons 24-11 in the third.
Heading into the final frame, the Gryphons faced a 32-point deficit but remained unfazed as Charles Amponsah (Brampton, Ont) opened the scoring for the Gryphons. He was followed closely by Jack Beatty (Woodstock, Ont) and Daniel Thompson (Oakville, Ont) who were both successful from three to dent the Marauder lead. However, this strong string of plays did little more than cut the lead as McMaster was able to hold on for a 97-67 victory.
The Gryphons head to Waterloo to seek out redemption on Saturday (Jan. 12) to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks. Tip-off is set for 3:00 pm.

Windsor @ Laurier
WATERLOO, Ont. (January 9, 2013) - William Coulthard of Oakville, Ont., and Maxwell Allin of Chatham, Ont., put on an offensive clinic on Wednesday night as the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks defeated the No. 8 Windsor Lancers 112-92 at the Athletic Complex.
With the win, the Hawks snap a five game losing streak in conference action to improve to 3-7 on the season while the Lancers fall to 7-3.
Fresh off an astounding 39-point performance against McMaster which earned him CIS Athlete of the Week honours, Coulthard was right back at it on Wednesday. The sophomore guard dropped 36 points on the Lancers, including shooting an impressive 7-of-15 from three-point range. It is the third time in four games, including non-conference action, that Coulthard has eclipsed the 30-point barrier.
As for Allin, the fourth year guard returned to the lineup after missing the past two games due to personal issues. Playing with a heavy heart, Allin didn't miss a step as he finished with a double-double of 28 points and 10 assists, the fifth time he's accomplished the feat in just eight games this season. He also added seven rebounds and three steals in 38 minutes.
After falling behind early in the game, the Hawks battled back and exploded for 33 points in the second quarter thanks to some sloppy play from Windsor which saw the OUA Wests top team plagued by turnovers and poor decision making. The offensive outburst helped Laurier take a 54-42 lead at the half.
Windsor attempted to battle back in the second half but everytime they made a run, the Hawks would answer. Despite a size disadvantage, the Hawks held their own on the boards, finishing the game with just one less rebound than the Lancers, which denied Windsor many second chance opportunities.
The game was put out of reach midway through the fourth quarter when Windsor coach Chris Oliver received two technical fouls, sending Allin to the line for five shots. He made four to give the Hawks a 20 point cushion, one they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.
Aside of Coulthard and Allin, both Aiddian Walters of Vaughn, Ont., and Patrick Donnelly of Oakville, Ont., had impressive performances. Donnelly earned a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds while Walters had 12 points and three assists.
Enrico Diloreto of London, Ont., finished as the top scorer for Windsor as he had 23 points.
Laurier will look to keep their winning ways going on Saturday afternoon when they lost the Guelph Gryphons (3-7) at the Athletic Complex. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.

Waterloo @ Western
LONDON, Ont. - After a tough game against the Brock Badgers over the weekend, the Western Mustangs men’s basketball team looked for a win against the Waterloo Warriors in front of a hometown crowd at Alumni Hall. After a hard fought, very close game, the Mustangs fell to the Warriors in heartbreaking fashion, as the Warriors scored with three seconds remaining to pick up the 75-73 victory.
In the beginning of the first quarter, Waterloo controlled the game going on a 6-0 run. A quick three from Greg Morrow sparked energy in the Mustang squad and after a solid display from the Western leaders, Western found themselves up on the scoreboard. Both Morrow and Elliot Dooley contributed greatly to the Mustang run and provided their team with the edge needed to pull ahead. Peter Scholtes found success from beyond the arc and at the end of the first quarter Western held a 19-17 lead.
In the second frame, the Mustangs displayed a tight defence, which led to a number of missed shots by the Warriors. Western then began to capitalize on the inefficiency of the Waterloo offence, taking control of the game and going on a 9-0 run. Great offensive movement away from the ball created a number of opportunities for Western as well as effective, fundamental offense and all Western leaders contributed equally to the success of their team in the second quarter. The first half ended with the score 41-34 in favour of the Mustangs.
After a strong start to the third quarter by Waterloo’s Kyrie Coleman, Western’s lead began to diminish. Great offense off the bench from Dooley inspired the Mustangs but continued success from Waterloo allowed them pull in front to take a small lead, ending the third quarter with a 60-58 lead on the home team.
As anticipated, the fourth quarter was a nail biting 10 minutes and came down to the final seconds of the game. In the quarter’s opening moments, Western dominated on the offensive end thanks to Quinn Henderson, Scholtes, and Charlie Drouin. Unfortunately for the Mustangs great defence from Waterloo caused Western to go scoreless for two minutes late in the quarter, allowing the Warriors to maintain a 71-70 lead as the clock counted down. After Waterloo extended their lead to 73-70 Dooley made a clutch three pointer to tie the game up at 73 with just under one minute left. In the final seconds of the game, Jaspreet Gill for Waterloo made a fantastic layup, leading to a final score of 75-73 for the Waterloo Warriors.
The Mustangs have a chance to bounce back from tonight’s heartbreaking loss this weekend as the team travels to Hamilton for a Saturday afternoon showdown with the McMaster Marauders. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
