Winter Universiade Team Canada recap & results: Day 8
Team Canada also received solid performances in snowboarding and alpine skiing on the eighth day of competition at the biennial world university games.
In curling, on the final day of round-robin action, Brendan Bottcher and his University of Alberta crew dropped a 9-5 decision to Switzerland in their morning match but rebounded in the evening with an impressive 10-3 against top-ranked Sweden to finish the preliminary round in second place with a 7-2 record, trailing only the Swedes and their 8-1 mark.
Looking for their first FISU medal since they won the inaugural Universiade tournament in 2003, the Canadian men will return to the ice Thursday at 3 a.m. EST (9 a.m. Trentino) to face Great Britain (6-3), an opponent they beat 5-4 in their tournament opener on Dec. 12.
The other Final Four matchup will see Sweden battle either the United States (5-4) or Norway (5-4), who will face off in a tie-breaker on Wednesday. The bronze-medal match is also scheduled for Thursday, at 9 a.m. EST, while the tournament final is set for Friday at 8 a.m. EST.
On the women’s side, it was a different story for Laura Crocker and her Wilfrid Laurier University squad as they lost 9-5 to South Korea in their lone duel of the day to end the competition in sixth place at 4-5.
In snowboarding, Audrey McManiman of St. Ambroise de Kildare, Que., competed in the semifinals of the women’s halfpipe event. The CEGEP Garneau student received a 57.75 score for her performance, which left her in fifth place in her group and in eighth position in the final overall standings.
In alpine skiing, no less than six Canadians took the start of the men’s giant slalom. Philippe Rivet, a University of Montreal from St. Lambert, Que., was 29th after the first run (56.16) but had the ninth best time in the second race (53.55) to finish 22nd out of 95 competitors.
In cross-country skiing, six Canadian women and five men hit the trails on Tuesday.
Andrea Lee of Black Creek, B.C., was the top Canuck in the women’s 5-kilometre free, taking the 54th position in a time of 14:38.7. In the men’s 10km free, Peter Beisel of Owen Sound, Ont., placed 70th in 26:26.8.
