Winter Universiade: Canadian men remain perfect, women drop to 1-2
Bottcher, backed by Michael Lizmore (third), Brad Thiessen (second), Karrick Martin (lead) and Parker Konschuh (alternate), with coach Rob Krepps, stole two ends – including a big three points in the eighth – on his way to a 10-2 victory over China’s Xiu Yue Ma in morning action.
In the evening game against Norway’s Markus Hoeiberg, Bottcher used hammer to score multiple points in the early ends, and stole two more to lead 8-1 heading to the fifth-end break. Norway fought back to score three in the sixth, but Canada scored its deuce in the seventh and secured the 10-4 victory.
Team Canada men are now undefeated and sit at the top of the leaderboard, tied with Sweden with 3-0 records. Bottcher and team will meet Korea’s Chang Min Kim (2-1) in their only game on Saturday.
On the women’s side, Laura Crocker and her Wilfrid Laurier University team of third Sarah Wilkes, second Jennifer Gates, lead Cheryl Kreviazuk, alternate Breanne Meakin and coach Garry Coderre struggled against Switzerland’s Michele Jaeggi, giving up three stolen ends on the way to a 10-2 loss.
The Canadian women’s squad will face tough competition Saturday, when they take on Great Britain’s Hannah Fleming (2-1) and the undefeated Russian Federation squad (3-0), led by that country’s national team skip, Anna Sidorova.
