Waterloo off to 2-0 start at OUA curling
The Guelph Curling Club (GCC), which is hosting the annual showcase of Ontario's top university rinks for a fourth consecutive season, is celebrating its incredulous 175th anniversary in the 2013-14 year. The OUA and GCC will continue their proud partnership in hosting the event through the 2015-16 season.
Jake Walker and the defending national champion Waterloo Warriors men's curling team sit atop the Pool A standings after the first day of competition. The Warriors, who are looking for their third-straight OUA banner, kicked off the first day of the championships with a 4-2 victory over the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Guelph, Trent and Carleton also picked up wins in the tournament's first draw on the men's side.
Scott Brandon and the Brock Badgers join Walker's Warriors on top of Pool A after also earning an unblemished 2-0 mark with wins over Laurentian and Queen's, while four teams are tied for first in Pool B with 1-0 records.
The host Windsor Lancers rebounded from their loss in the morning's draw to clinch a 7-5 victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds, improving to 1-1 after Day 1 of the competition. Algoma's men's and women's teams are playing in their first-ever conference championship after joining the OUA for the 2013-14 season.
On the women's side, Guelph, Waterloo and Laurentian jumped to the top of Pool A after the first day of competition, each garnering two victories.
Waterloo dominated both its contests on Thursday, topping Algoma 9-3 in the morning and concluding the evening session with an 8-1 defeat over McMaster. Skip Halyna Tepylo and her squad needed just 12 of 16 ends to earn their pair of victories.
After beginning their week with a big 12-6 win over the Toronto Varsity Blues, Jaimee Gardiner and last year's bronze medalists from Guelph squeaked by Queen's 5-4 to remain undefeated heading into Day 2 on Friday.
Laurentian and skip Paige Droog also earned a triumph over the Marauders and Thunderbirds to take a share of the lead in Pool A.
Laurier, guided by skip Carly Howard earned two wins in back-to-back draws to end the day first in Pool B. The Golden Hawks knocked off Brock 5-2 to open the day before disposing of the defending women's OUA champion Western Mustangs 8-2 in the afternoon session.
Western, led by Caitlin Romain, opened their title defence with a 6-3 triumph over Lakehead, finishing Day 1 with a 1-1 mark.
