Bevan, Burt, Taylor, Duhart named OUA athletes of the week
Burlington, Ont. – Lauren Bevan, Zach Burt, Owen Taylor, and Dalton Duhart have been named OUA athletes of the week for the period ending October 15, 2023.
Lauren Bevan, Golf, Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks
Wilfrid Laurier golfer Lauren Bevan added to the school's record books this past weekend when she became the first Golden Hawks golfer to win the Judy McCrae trophy at the OUA Golf Championships.
After shooting a +3 (74) during Saturday's first round at Grey Silo Golf Club in Waterloo, the business major from Pickering, Ont. knocked down five birdies in extremely wet and cold conditions on Day 2 and was the lone competitor in the field with a round of even-par. Her effort moved her up one spot in the standings and two shots up on the second-place finisher to claim the title at the team's home course.
Bevan's score also boosted the Golden Hawks to the first ever team win for the women's program at the OUA Championships
Zach Burt, Golf, Waterloo Warriors
Playing in the unfavourable weather conditions did not stop Zach Burt from competing at the top of his game and swinging his way to a gold medal.
After a tough first day of the 2023 OUA Championships, the junior golfer had an efficient round on the second day of the play, registering a 3-under (68) that saw him only card two bogeys to go along with five birdies.
From Burt teeing off in Round 2 to his final putt therein, the recreation and sport business major was able to leapfrog seven other competitors in the standings to secure the first place finish, earning himself a Len Shore Trophy and helping his Warriors take home the overall men’s team title.
Owen Taylor, Baseball, Toronto Varsity Blues
Swinging his way into championship weekend, Owen Taylor delivered an MVP-worthy performance at Bernie Arbour Stadium, helping his Toronto Varsity Blues capture the 2023 OUA title.
In addition to his strong defensive play, the dynamic outfielder showcased his skills at the plate with a 2-for-4 outing in the teams semifinal win over the host Marauders. He added a walk to those two doubles in the game, knocking in a run and scoring a run in the 6-1 victory.
His impact was even bigger in the Sunday championship, meanwhile, as the Nassau, Bahamas product drove in a crucial run during the Blues come-from-behind victory. He didn’t stop there, however, as he took to the mound in extra innings to help close out the thrilling gold medal game, forcing a pop fly for the first out before striking out the final two Warriors he faced.
Dalton Duhart, Hockey, Queen’s Gaels
Staying undefeated so far this season, the Queen’s Gaels had two big wins at Memorial Arena this weekend, with much of their success being led by the young art and science major, Dalton Duhart.
On the road in Ottawa, the sophomore was in on four of five goals for Queen's in their 5-3 win over the Gee-Gees. In addition to his helper, he netted a hat trick for the Tricolour to cap off his four-point night.
If that wasn’t enough, Duhart continued his torrid weekend in the team’s tilt with the Ravens. This time, the Grand Blank, Michigan product was a part of all four of his team’s goals, recording a pair of his own while also setting up a pair en route to the groups’ 4-2 victory.
Duhart finished the weekend with five goals and three assists and now leads the OUA offensively in goals, assists, and points on the young season.
