UOIT 2 at Guelph 1
GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team were defeated by the UOIT Ridgebacks at the Gryphon Soccer Complex on Sunday 2-1. The loss pushes the Gryphons to 5-3-0 on the season while the Ridgeback's improve to 2-4-2.
The game was closely contested with chances from both sides. Gryphon midfielder Courtney Whiteside opened the scoring in the first half with a beautiful kick from just outside the box. The Ridgeback's evened the score on a penalty kick due to a handball inside the box in the 26th minute. Despite the tie at half the Gryphons peppered the Ridgeback's keeper, outshooting UOIT 8-3.
The Ridgebacks took the lead in the second half after a back and forth start. Gryphon coach Randy Ragan made three substitutions to try and provide some offense. The Gryphons pushed the pace, consistently playing in the Ridgeback's end.
Gryphon goalie Alex King was kept busy in the second half, making seven saves.
There was a mad flurry in the opposition's box in the dying moments of the game but unfortunately the Gryphon's could not put the ball in the net. The game ended in a 2-1 defeat for Guelph.
The Gryphons look to win their next contest on Wednesday as they play the Waterloo Warriors. The game will again take place at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

Ottawa 1 at Laurentian 0
The Laurentian Voyageurs came within minutes of a scoreless draw with the No. 1 Ottawa Gee-Gees, but conceded a goal in the 90th minute in the 1-0 loss.
Both halves were a fight for possession between the Gee-Gees and the Voyageurs. Laurentian was able to create a great scoring opportunity off a corner kick in the first half, when Amanda Norrie (Innisfil, ON) gained possession of a free ball at the top of the box and fired a shot at the net. Cynthia Leblanc (Grandby, QC) deflected the shot past the net, stoping the Voyageur’s most prominent opportunity of the half.
Laurentian held off the Gee-Gees fast forward line for the entirety of the game, only giving up four shots and three corners kicks. Unfortunately for the Voyageurs, the Gee-Gees were able to capitalize late in the game, when Corina Jarrett (Ottawa, ON) scored, putting the Gee-Gees up by one to finish the game.
The women now face the Ottawa Gee-Gee’s in Ottawa on September 28th at 1:00pm.

Western 0 at McMaster 0
The Western Mustangs and McMaster Marauders played to the brink of their match on Sunday, but both walked away with a scoreless draw.
The result marked the Marauders (3-1-4) fifth clean sheet of the season, and kept them firmly inside the top half of the OUA West division table with 13 points from eight games.
Sunday's matinee was a disjointed one in the opening half, where the two teams quickly settled into a physical contest in midfield, while struggling to establish the linkup play needed to feed their respective strikers.
Anne Yeboah and Emma Mangialardi saw little of the ball in the final third, until Yeboah produced McMaster's clearest chance of the game in the 34th minute. The rookie forward showed her class by taking down a bouncing pass in the penalty area and knocking it into space as she turned. But the finish left something to be desired – and Yeboah cursing her luck – as her uncontested shot hooked skyward.
Neither team found another chance of that calibre before the halftime whistle, although play opened up considerably in the final minutes of the period.
It was the visitors who began to turn the screws as the teams resumed play in the second half, asking constant questions of McMaster's defence. The Marauders drew back as the Mustangs took the intiative in the middle of the park, but the hosts showed their organization in the back as the pressure mounted.
Despite its ascendance, Western could cut out very few clear scoring chances in the face of the McMaster defence. That changed in the final ten minutes of the match, when the Mustangs were finally able to stretch the field.
A well-weighted pass in the 85th minute unlocked striker Lauren Winquist through the middle, and her effort beat McMaster's onrushing goalkeeper Duffey before striking the post and bouncing clear.
The Marauders weathered a final storm in the 90th minute, when a low drive struck Duffey's near post and rolled to an oncoming Mustang midfielder who scooped her effort just over the bar.
The final whistle was a welcome sound for the hosts, who secured a point in yet another low-scoring contest. McMaster has allowed only four goals through eight games in 2013.
The Marauders return to action on Friday, September 27, when they travel to Windsor to battle the Lancers. McMaster will look to cement the season series against Windsor, having beaten the Lancers at Ron Joyce Stadium on September 15.

Carleton 8 at Nipissing 1
?It was another difficult day on the pitch for the women’s soccer team as the Carleton Ravens beat the Lakers 8-1.
The Lakers coming into the game were a little banged up as several vets were out of the line-up recovering from injury while keeper Carlee Bennard was also on the shelf serving a one game suspension for a red card incurred in the game versus Ottawa.
It was no surprise that the team would face a significant challenge.
It did not take long for Carleton to make this point as they scored in the first minute of play capturing a ball from the midfield and with a few quick touches it found its way to the foot of Abby Niscastro who fired it past keeper Katlyn Quinn. Adrianna Ruggerio would then add two more before the end of the first half.
Carleton’s Andrea Way took the games into her own hands as she wanted nothing to do with a Lakers comeback and she collected a hat trick. The lone goal for the Lakers came late in the game as Valaine Confessor tucked a shot that was saved by the Carleton keeper however she had crossed the goal line in doing so.
The Lakers will have to re-group as they head to the Nation’s Capital to face the same teams this weekend.

York 1 at Laurier 1
WATERLOO, Ont. (September 22, 2013) - The No. 9 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's soccer team played their second game of the weekend Sunday afternoon when they played host to the York Lions. The Hawks looked to have the game wrapped up but a late game equalizer from York made the final a 1-1 draw.
The Hawks (4-1-3) drew first blood late in the first half when Emily Brown of Waterloo, Ont., capitalized on a York (2-2-4) bobble and headed home her fourth of the season. Brown's goal, coming in the 44th minute, sent the Hawks to half time with the lead.
Laurier fought hard to maintain their single goal lead as a strong defence shut down most of York's opportunities while keeper and Surrey, B.C., native Katrina Ward snatched up the shots that did make it through.
The Hawks also kept up the pressure offensively having several scoring opportunities, including a near break away by Waterloo, Ont., Kayleigh Bell. However, before Bell was able to get into a position where she could get a shot off, she was hauled down by York's Shannon Wood of Brampton, Ont. Wood would receive a Yellow card on the play.
Laurier held off the Lions right to the end of regulation time and the win was in sight as they tried hard to maintain ball possession during the two minutes of stoppage time. Despite some great effort from a tired group, the Hawks could not hold off the Lions forever and after just over a minute of stoppage time, Adeife Adekusibe of Nobleton, Ont., was able to knock in the game saving goal to push the game to a 1-1 draw.
The Hawks will now look to Friday when they will host UOIT in a rematch of Saturday's game. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. and tickets are available at tickets.laurierathletics.com.

KINGSTON, Ont. (September 21, 2013) - The No. 2 Gaels tied the Ryerson Rams 1-1 Saturday afternoon on the West Campus Turf Field with Tara Bartram's (Vancouver) fourth goal of the year.
The rainy affair was deadlocked through the first 45 minutes, with the Gaels getting the better of the chances in the first half.
Ryerson broke the deadlock in the 69th minute when Nicole Paiva sneaked through the Gaels defense and passed the ball around goalkeeper Michaila Frawley (Victoria) into the net.
Bartram responded for the Gaels in the 77th minute, capitalizing on a misplay from Rams' keeper Rebecca Petrocelli by slotting the ball into the empty net.
As both teams battled for the go-ahead goal in the dying minutes, Frawley made the play of the game, tipping a Ryerson shot that hit the crossbar, but stayed out. The match ended 1-1.

Ottawa 7 at Nipissing 1
The Nipissing Lakers women’s soccer team did a formidable job of holding off the powerful Ottawa U offence to only one goal in the first half however the Gee-Gees found another gear in the second half scoring six goals to beat the Lakers 7-1.
It was a tale or two halves for the Lakers as a promising first half deteriorated quickly in the second as Ottawa scored two quick goals and Lakers keeper Carlee Bennard was handed a red card as she challenged for a ball.
The Lakers continued to press on without Bennard however the Lakers would concede two more goals before Shannon Russell put the Lakers on the board. Ottawa would add two more after this to gain the lopsided victory.
The Lakers task will not get any easier as the host the Carleton Ravens Sunday at the Education Centre Field.
