W-Soccer Roundup: Carleton beats Ottawa for first time ever, Western keeps undefeated season alive
October 13
Queen’s 2 at Ryerson 1
TORONTO – The Ryerson Rams women’s soccer team fell just shy of their second draw with the Queen’s Gaels on the season, dropping a 2-1 decision on Sunday afternoon at Monarch Park Stadium.
Freshman striker Karena Evans (Pickering, Ont.) got her first career OUA goal in the ninth minute with a great strike from the top of the box to give the Rams an early 1-0 lead. Niki Paiva (Waterloo, Ont.) applied pressure to the Queen’s defence forcing a turnover which Evans capitalized on.
Queen’s evened the score at ones in the 31st minute when Alexis McKinty (Burlington, Ont.) scored her first of the season.
The Gaels got the go-ahead and eventual game-winner in the 55th minute when Rachel Radu (Ottawa, Ont.) was left unmarked and finished off a great cross from the right flank.
The Rams pressured for an equalizer and had a pair of great chances. First, Erica Huculak (Barrie, Ont.) sent a header ringing off the left post with just under 30 minutes remaining.
Later on, Janica Adams (Toronto) chased down a ball and made a great cross finding Paiva, but Paiva’s shot hit her teammate Katlyn Rocha (Mississauga, Ont.) in the back as Rocha ran across the face of the goal.
With the loss, Ryerson runs their record to 3-8-2 and temporarily fall out of a playoff position as the Nipissing Lakers picked up a victory on Sunday to move ahead of the Rams.
Ryerson returns to action on Wednesday, Oct.16 when they travel to Peterborough for a midweek evening contest against the Trent Excalibur.

Laurier 2 at Western 4
LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs women's soccer team defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks 4-2 in OUA West women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Huron Flats Field as the Mustangs kept their undefeated season alive.
"It was a mixed performance," said Mustangs head coach Martin Painter. "Offensively we were very good and defensively we weren't so good but we're happy with the win. We have a couple of weeks to prepare for playoffs, and we are very happy with where we are but we know that we have things to work on."
The CIS No. 4 Mustangs now boast a 9-0-5 record this season to maintain first place in the OUA West while the second place Golden Hawks move to 7-3-3 on the year.
Laurier was first on the board on Sunday with a goal by OUA leading scorer Emily Brown just under the four-minute mark. They didn't keep the lead for long though as Sarah Deakin netted Western's first goal just one minute later.
Lauren Winquist added Western's second goal ten minutes later to give the Mustangs the lead for the first time in the game. The Mustangs kept the advantage until just under the 34-minute mark when the Golden Hawks added their second goal after a scramble in front of the Western net to tie the game.
The early score of 2-2 was indicative of the speed of play as the game maintained a fast pace throughout both halves, and although the Golden Hawks had multiple scoring opportunities late in the first half, Mustangs goalie Tori Edgar made several big saves to keep Laurier off the board, keeping the score tied at the break.
As both teams hit the field for the second half, it would be the Mustangs taking the early lead when a two-pronged attack netted the team's third goal. They'd extend that just a minute later as Winquist crossed the ball from deep in the corner to the front of the Laurier net where Jaynie Vandewalle tipped it in for her fourth goal in two games and to give the Mustangs a two-goal advantage.
There would be no more scoring for the rest of the match as Western counted its ninth win of the season and extending their undefeated streak to 14 games.
The Mustangs are back in action on Oct. 19 at 1:00 p.m. when they travel to Waterloo to face the Warriors.

Brock 2 at Windsor 0
The Lancer women's soccer team lost 2-0 to Brock Badgers in their last home game of the regular season.
With the loss, the Lancers are 5-7-2 on the season and in fifth place in the OUA West division.
The Blue & Gold dominated possession throughout the first half, but were unable to capitalize on any opportunities and the game went into the second half scoreless.
In the second, Windsor had a number of opportunities to get on the scoreboard. Forward Brianne Fuerth came close in the 53rd minute when she got her head onto a Cara Cirovski cross, and the header narrowly missed the mark. In the 72nd minute, Fuerth hit the post after breaking free of the Badgers defense.
After that Brock slowly started to come into the game forcing Lancer keeper Tara Bernard Rae into a save. In the 79th minute Badger Megan Salisbury got past the Lancer defense and scored on Bernard-Rae to break the scoreless tie.
Badger Lindsay McDonald scored shortly after in the 82nd minute after a keeper error allowed the forward to shoot the ball into the net.
The Lancers wrap up their season on the road next weekend against the UOIT Ridgebacks and York Lions as they try to push for a playoff position.

Ottawa 1 at Carleton 4
The longstanding losing skid against the Ottawa Gee-Gees is finally over for the Carleton Ravens.
It all came crumbling down for Ottawa as Carleton defeated the Gee-Gees for the first time ever with a dominating 4-1win at Ravens Field on Saturday afternoon.
Carleton had suffered through more than 40 plus games of losing to the cross town rival in women’s soccer before their ground breaking victory.
The Gee-Gees have had a stranglehold in head to head meetings with Carleton since Ottawa started a women’s soccer program back in 1994.
But that record is now a thing of the past with Carleton’s big win.
“I’m very happy for the girls, it’s a fantastic feeling to get that first win over Ottawa,” said Alex McNutt, Ravens head coach. “It’s a huge victory for us and to do it in such a convincing fashion is a bonus as we (Carleton) move forward to the playoffs.”
The Ravens offensive attack was led by Abby Nicastro (Ottawa, ON) who struck for two goals. The second year forward opened the scoring in the 45th minute then capitalized on a penalty kick, four minutes into the second half.
Nicastro’s regained Carleton’s momentum after Ottawa (47th) scored to tie the game at one goal apiece.
“I knew that penalty kicks are so important to take advantage of whenever you get the opportunity to take one,” said Nicastro. “I wasn’t nervous at all when I was waiting to take the kick, I felt pretty confident and knew that if I scored, it would change the flow of the game and set the momentum back in our favour.”
Nicastro was 100% right as Carleton continued to press and was rewarded with another two goals.
Adrianna Ruggiero (Markham, ON) (80th) and Sarah Royer (Lethbridge, AB) (87th) filled the Gee-Gees net for the Ravens en route to their historic victory.
“It felt great to score the third goal of the game,” said Ruggiero. “Before the match we spoke about how much we wanted to beat the Gee-Gees and continue our unbeaten record at home. It ended up being a great day for us.”
With the win Carleton (8-2-4) jumps into second place in the OUA East division with 28 points. The Ravens have one more point than Toronto (8-2-3) but the Varsity Blues have a game in hand over Carleton.
With the Carleton victory the Gee-Gees (10-1-3) suffered their first loss of the season. Ottawa leads the division with 33 points after 14 games.
Carleton closes out their regular season next weekend with a pair of home games. On Saturday Oct. 19 the Ryerson Rams will visit Ravens Field. Game time is 5:45 p.m. The Ravens then tackle the University of Toronto Varsity Blues at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20.

RMC 0 at Toronto 2
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer team kept their undefeated streak alive with a 2-0 win over the RMC Paladins on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 13) at Varsity Centre.
With the win, the Blues improve to 9-2-3 and remain in second place in the OUA East division with two games to go in the regular season. Toronto is undefeated in their last 12 games, having not lost since opening weekend versus Ottawa and Carleton.
After a scoreless first half, the Blues were awarded a penalty kick after a hand ball in the box in the 62nd minute. Team captain Aisha Lewis of Mississauga, Ont., stepped up and fired the ball into the bottom right corner of the net for the eventual game-winner.
Two minutes later, first-year defender Christine Mulligan (Vancouver) sent a booming shot from 40 yards out into the back of the net.
Blues goalkeeper Sara Petrucci earned the shut out victory.
The Varsity Blues return to the field next Saturday, October 19 as they head to Ottawa to take on the No. 1 Gee-Gees. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
This being the final regular season home game, the Varsity Blues honoured graduating seniors Fatima Braimoh, Caroline Murphy, Diana Esteireiro, Lisa English and Aisha Lewis in a special pre-game ceremony.

Laurier 2 at York 1
The York University Lions women's soccer team dropped a tough 2-1 decision on Saturday (Oct. 12) to the Laurier Golden Hawks at York Stadium.
The loss moves the Lions to 3-4-6 on the season and drops them into seventh place in the OUA West standings with three games remaining. They are currently two points out of a playoff spot but do have a game in hand over the sixth-place McMaster Marauders.
Though the first half would end in a draw, it would not be for lack of opportunity. York's first scoring chance came in the 10th minute off of a Shannon Wood (Brampton, Ont.) free kick attempt in front of the Golden Hawks goal. Wood's shot was marked for the back of the net but goalkeeper Maggie Carmichael (Orono, Ont.) would just get enough of the ball on a desperate diving save to knock it over the crossbar.
Sarah Wong (Toronto) threatened again for the Lions, launching a laser shot at Carmichael to force yet another leaping save. The onslaught of offence had Laurier pinned deep, and the Lions generated another scoring opportunity out of a scramble that would just miss wide right.
York's aggressive play sacrificed a fast break the opposite way, however, as Laurier's Julie Maheu (Oakville, Ont.) sneaked past the Lions defence for a breakaway on goaltender Sarah Fiorini (Newmarket, Ont.). But as Maheu went to shoot the ball, Fiorini's sliding save attempt instead resulted in an illegal tackle outside the 18-yard box. Fiorini received a red card on the play and had to leave the game, and Vanessa Sansone (Toronto) would take her place in net.
Sansone would settle in nicely, retaining the 0-0 draw at break.
As action re-opened in the second half, Laurier looked to test the new goalkeeper. Relying on a quick opening surge, Emily Brown (Waterloo, Ont.) attacked the net and fired a shot past Sansone just three minutes into the second, giving the Golden Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Laurier continued to test Sansone, as Katie Bishop (Surrey, B.C.) launched three straight free kick attempts at the goalkeeper to no avail. Instead, it would be York's Dina Ricco (Bolton, Ont.) who would take the ball the opposite way and curl a beautiful top-shelf shot of her own to tie the game at 1-1 in the 77th minute.
The momentum was short lived, however, as Bishop finally converted, deking out a York defender and notching the go-ahead goal in the 87th minute. The 2-1 lead would hold as the eventual final.
Sansone finished with four saves on six shots, while Carmichael also made four saves on five shots.
The Lions travel to Oshawa, Ont., on Wednesday (Oct. 16) to face the UOIT Ridgebacks at Vaso's Field, starting at 6 p.m. They will return to York Stadium on Saturday (Oct. 19) to host the Windsor Lancers on the final weekend of the regular season.

Trent 0 at Laurentian 0
The Laurentian Voyageurs women’s soccer team was looking to further advance in the standings this Saturday by earning three points in their last home game of the season. While the Voyageurs were able to maintain possession throughout the game, they were unable to find the back of the net in a 0-0 draw against the Trent Excalibur.
The Voyageurs were able to Trent’s back line under pressure, however their game lacked intensity in the first 45 minutes of play. Laurentian’s squad showed glimpses of energy, and were able to put 4 shots on net, and earn four corner kicks. Even though they were creating opportunities, the Voyageurs showed signs of frustration at their inability to get ahead in the game and that they were allowing for Trent to remain in the game, the half ending at 0-0.
Starting off the second half there were changes made to the Voyageurs’ lineup, with rookies Vanessa Cesario (Mississauga, ON) and Alexandra Ross (Sudbury, ON) coming into the midfield. The halftime break seemed to give Laurentian more energy, as they were able to put Trent under pressure for the remainder of the game, keeping the ball within their end of the field. The Voyageurs’ most prominent scoring opportunities came off corner kicks and Ross’ long throws into the box, however Laurentian was unable to find the back of the net on the set pieces. The game ended in a 0-0 tie, which is slightly disappointing for the Voyageurs as they were hoping to secure a home playoff game this year. Both goaltenders would earn a shutout for their performances, which increases Greenwood’s count to seven for the season.
The women will be regrouping this week before travelling to Kingston for their game against Queens on Saturday at noon. Continue to follow your Voyagers at www.luvoyageurs.com for up-to-date news and results.

RMC 1 at Ryerson 1
TORONTO – The Ryerson Rams women’s soccer team racked up 13 second half shots and dominated the second frame but could not find a game-winner, settling for a 1-1 draw against the RMC Paladins on Saturday afternoon.
RMC’s Lisa Udegbunam (Mississauga, Ont.) scored her third goal of the season in just the seventh minute of play when she headed home a free ball in the box following a strong throw from the touch line from Mackenzie Brauer (Ajax, Ont.).
The Paladins took the lead into the second half but following the half time break RMC began to sit back defensively and give the Rams plenty of room to go to work.
Rams defender Hanna Park (Markham, Ont.), moved up into a more midfield/attacking role this afternoon, got the Rams on the board in the 65th minute. It took Park two chances to finish, but after hitting the cross bar with her first header, she followed it into the box and headed home the rebound.
The final five minutes saw opportunities for each team to find a game winner but the Rams had the best chance when Karena Evans (Pickering, Ont.) was hauled down in the box in the 87th minute and awarded a penalty kick. Nicole Paiva (Waterloo, Ont.) stepped to the dot but Paladins keeper Alexandria Hogg (Ottawa, Ont.) was up to the task and saved the game for RMC.
The Rams (3-7-2) were looking for the three points with a victory on Saturday to gain some separation in the standings, but instead remain just one point ahead of the Paladins and Nipissing Lakers as Ryerson clings to the final playoff position.
Despite not getting the victory, head coach Kevin Souter was pleased with his team’s ability to come back from an early goal against and dominate in the second half.
“It’s unfortunate we couldn’t find the game winner but in the big picture that’s not what it’s about. It’s about growing as a team and developing and we’re certainly on the right track.”
Ryerson returns to the field on Sunday, Oct.13 for their final home game of the season against the Queen’s Gaels at noon.

Brock 0 at Western 5

"It's a good result playing at home, and we're really happy with the game," said Mustangs head coach Martin Painter. "It's a good confidence builder with three games to go."
Vandewalle's three goals were also the first three of the game, scoring at the 30, 45, and 73 minute marks. Mustangs Krista Lee and Adrianna Giuffre also added a goal each to further the lead and contribute to the win.

Saturday's game was the second of the season between the two squads, having met late last month in St. Catharines where the Mustangs claimed a 2-1 victory.
In the opening half the Mustangs applied strong offensive pressure to keep the Badgers in their end of the field. Despite Brock's efforts to move the ball down field, the Mustangs were able to maintain their offensive pressure, allowing Vandewalle to put the Mustangs on the scoreboard in the 30th minute and give Western a 1-0 advantage. Waterloo 2 at Windsor 3
The Lancer women's soccer team scored three second half goals to erase a two goal deficit and defeat the Waterloo Warriors 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
After falling behind 2-0 at the half, the Blue & Gold came out firing in the second. Cara Cirovski opened the scoring in the second, and Jaclyn Faraci added two to cap off a great display of resilience by the Lancers.
Waterloo's Adrienne Goldsworthy opened the scoring in the 21st minute, when a cross was floated in by Kaitlyn Barnett found a wide open Goldsworthy who headed the ball into the top corner.
The Warriors double their lead just before half time. Warrior Emily Decket was dragged down just outside the box, allowing Goldsworthy to step up and fire the ball past Lancer keeper Tara Bernard-Rae.
Firing on all cylinders to start the second half, Windsor took only four minutes to get on the board and start their comeback. Becca Fuerth set up Cara Cirovski for a great volley finish into the net in the 49th minute to spoil the Warrior shut-out.
The Lancers kept up the pressure throughout the half, but did not get the equalizer until the 80th minute. Waterloo struggled to clear a corner and the ball bounced kindly to Faraci who made no mistake shooting the ball into the back of the net.
In the 88th minute the Warriors defense had more trouble clearing their lines as a long throw in caused a scramble in the box. Once again the ball fell into the path of Faraci who secured the win with a shot right into the back of the net.
The Lancers will close out the home portion of their regular season schedule on Sunday when they host the UOIT Ridgebacks at 1:00 p.m. at Alumni Field.

Guelph 1 at York 1
The York University Lions women's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw against the second-place Guelph Gryphons on Friday (Oct. 11) at York Stadium.
The one point moved the Lions into sole possession of the sixth and final playoff spot in the OUA West Division with four games remaining on the schedule. They are now one point ahead of Guelph and two behind the McMaster Marauders, with one game in hand. Guelph remains in second place, three points behind Western and two ahead of Laurier.
The Lions' effort was led by last year's OUA and CIS rookie of the year, Nour Ghoneim (Aurora, Ont.), who continued her recent hot streak by scoring her fifth goal in six games.
Despite remaining scoreless after the first half, York was able to orchestrate several scoring opportunities that turned up the pressure on Guelph early. In just the 10th minute of play, Sarah Wong (Toronto) would send a well-placed corner attempt in front of the Gryphons goal, forcing a tough save by goalkeeper Alexandra King (Ottawa).
Following suit three minutes later, Ghoneim rifled her first shot of the game to force another diving save by King as York's pressure intensified.
The rest of the half would be a back and forth affair until Ghoneim earned another solid scoring opportunity for the Lions with a free kick in the 45th minute. The kick would soar above the Gryphon goal, however, pushing the 0-0 draw into half.
Ghoneim would not be denied for long, and just three minutes into the second half she gained the lead for the Lions on another beautiful shot in front of the Gryphons net.
But despite the rather one-sided affair through most of the game, the Gryphons would eventually battle back late. Victoria Cadman (Burlington, Ont.) powered a shot in the 84th minute that would find its way through goaltender Sarah Fiorini's (Newmarket, Ont.) save attempt.
The score restored a draw at 1-1, which held as the final.
The Lions will retake York Stadium on Sunday (Oct. 12) when they host the third-place Laurier Golden Hawks at 1 p.m.

Nipissing 0 at Laurentian 0
The Laurentian Voyageurs women’s soccer team was playing their annual “Pink” game to show their support for the fight against breast cancer on Friday at the James Jerome Sport Complex in Sudbury. The Voyageurs were looking to beat their northern rivals, the Nipissing Lakers, in their second encounter of the season, however were unable to find the back of the net in what lead to a 0-0 draw.
The Voyageurs, sporting their pink jerseys, started off the game with intensity and pace. Laurentian was able to put Nipissing’s back line under pressure from the opening whistle and created many goal scoring opportunities within the first half of play. The Voyageurs wing play and corner kicks were threatening throughout the first half, as they earned six corner kicks and put five shots on the Lakers net. Defensively, Laurentian were able to shut down all offense that the Lakers created, allowing them to register no shots on net. The half remained scoreless, with both teams looking for answers going into the final 45 minutes of play.
In the second half the Lakers were able to possess the ball more than in the first, and this created momentum for their attack. While they were only able to get one shot on net, they controlled the play within the middle third of the field, and were outworking Laurentian to the ball. Laurentian’s back line did not allow Nipissing to create any threatening chances, and kept the play well away from their net. The game ended with no goals from either team, giving both goalies shutouts in their performances.
In both encounters this season the Women’s Voyageur and Lakers teams have tied, therefore giving each team a point in Nipissing and Laurentian soccer teams’ competition for the Riley Cup. The Riley Cup is a cup that is given to the school that earns the most points in the four games that these teams play, and is to commemorate the life of Laurentian Women’s Soccer team’s coach Rob Gallo’s son, Riley, who passed away from cancer at a young age.
The women will be looking for a win against the Trent Excalibur on Saturday at 5 p.m.

McMaster 1 at UOIT 3
For the second time in six days, the Marauders were handed a loss by the UOIT Ridgebacks. McMaster dropped the game with major playoff implications, 3-1.
UOIT's scoring started early, with the first goal coming two minutes into the contest. Midfielder Emily Copeland-Dinan took the through ball and beat Marauder keeper Brittany Duffey in a one-on-one to put Mac in an early hole.
That hole would grow larger only three minutes later, as forward Sonia Sampogna would score again on a similar play to make the score 2-0.
Shortly after the tally, McMaster would be forced to sub defender Julia Maiolino after she appeared to aggravate a knee injury that had been keeping her sidelined since the Aug. 30 season opener.
The Ridgebacks would continue to press for the remainder of the half, but Duffey ensured that the score would stay 2-0 with a diving stop in the 43rd minute.
With Mac looking to grab points in the game as the Ridgebacks and Marauders battle for playoff position, head coach Brett Mosen changed formation and put three players on the back line. The decision would pay dividends as the Maroon and Grey kept the ball in the offensive third of the pitch.
Mac's pressure would produce positive results in the 70th minute, after a UOIT keeper bobbled cross led to Samantha Salata score. It was the Kitchener, Ont. native's first goal of her OUA career.
A little momentum behind them, McMaster continued to make moves in the offensive end. An Emma Mangialardi shot caused a ruckus in front of goal but no Marauder could put a foot on the ball to tie it up.
The Ridgebacks would put a muzzle on any comeback opportunity in the 86th minute with Sampogna knocking her second goal of the night home in another one-on-one.
Conceding the loss means that McMaster will need to put up points in their final two games of the season. York sits behind one spot behind the Marauders, with 15 points to Mac's 17. The Lions have two games in hand.
Another team with two games in hand is the Windsor Lancers, who have 14 points.
McMaster's next game will be the Oct. 19, where they host the lowly Brock Badgers (2-6-4). The final regular season tilt will be against the Laurier Golden Hawks (6-2-3), who sit third in the OUA West standings.
The Brock match-up is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
