October 16
Laurier 3 at Brock 1
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. (Oct. 15, 2013) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's soccer (8-3-3) team traveled to St. Catharines Wednesday afternoon to take on the Brock Badgers (3-8-4). The Hawks took the first meeting between the two this season and they would do so again, winning 3-1.
Neither team was able to find the board for the majority of the first half but Brock broke through just before the halftime whistle. Badgers rookie Alana Wong of Mississauga, Ont., tallied her first career goal to give Brock the advantage after 45 minutes.
The Badgers would hold the lead until the 70th minute when Katie Bishop of Surrey, B.C., would put in the equalizer. The Hawks would maintain the offensive pressure and within six minutes of Bishop's goal, Emily Brown of Waterloo, Ont., had scored twice to give Laurier an insurmountable 3-1 edge.
The two goals bring Brown's total up to 16 on the year, breaking her own team record from last season with two games remaining. She also takes over the CIS scoring lead, vaulting Marie-Eve Jacques from Sherbrooke who has 15 goals on the season.
Brown will look to add to her total this weekend when the Hawks travel to Guelph on Saturday to take on the Gryphons before returning to University Stadium Sunday to close out their season at home against McMaster.

York 2 at UOIT 2
OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT Ridgebacks women’s soccer team clinched a home playoff game for the first time in program history with a 2-2 draw against the York Lions on Wednesday night.
With the tie, UOIT extended their unbeaten streak to five games over which they are sporting a 4-0-1 record. The Ridgebacks are 7-5-3 this season and sit in third place in the OUA western conference, one point ahead of the Guelph Gryphons.
In Wednesday’s game, York managed to take a 2-1 lead in the 86th minute when Nour Ghoneim. The Ridgebacks left the second year forward alone in the box, as she turned and buried a shot in the top right hand corner.
With injury time approaching, defender Kylie Bordeleau (Cambridge, Ont.) was taken down in the York box, giving UOIT a golden opportunity to tie the game up. With the game on the line, Ridgeback captain Shannon Lucas made no mistake on the penalty kick as she scored her third goal of the season to level the score.
On the final play of injury time, freshman Nicole Zajac (Mississauga, Ont.) had a glorious chance to win it for the Ridgebacks as she turned and fired a shot on net from just outside the box. The ball flew past the York goalkeeper’s extended arms but rang off the crossbar. York was able to clear the ball and the referee blew the final whistle.
Sonia Sampogna, who was named an OUA peak performer and a nominee for the CIS athlete of the week award, scored UOIT’s first goal of the game in the 11th minute. Sampogna has scored four goals in the Ridgebacks last three games.
York’s first goal came in a controversial manner as second year forward Adeife Adekusibe tripped up Lucas at midfield, giving her clear cut breakaway on net in which she would convert.
Shots on target would end up 6-5 in favour of the Ridgebacks. UOIT goalkeeper Melissa MacKinnon (Millgrove, Ont.) stopped three shots while York’s Tamara Orlando made four saves.
Over their last eight games, the Ridgebacks are 6-1-1.
UOIT will wrap up their regular season on Sunday afternoon with a match-up against Windsor (5-7-2). Kick-off is at 1 p.m. York has two games remaining in their regular season and are one point out of a playoff position.

Ryerson 1 at Trent 3
PETERBOROUGH, Ont. – The Ryerson Rams women’s soccer team couldn’t hold onto a 1-0 first half lead and eventually fell by a score of 3-1 to the Trent Excalibur on Wednesday night.
Rebecca Arnott (Whitby, Ont.) opened the scoring in the 10th minute of play for the Rams, heading home a corner kick delivered by Niki Paiva (Waterloo, Ont.).
Ryerson looked to be in control until Trent was awarded a penalty kick in the 72nd minute and Sabrina Bulfon converted from the dot to tie the score at ones.
Just over five minutes later, Valarie Andrew used a burst of speed to get by the Ryerson defence and was able to chip home the go-ahead goal.
Right as time was expiring the Excalibur cashed in on a header from a corner kick as Katherine Munro added an insurance marker to round out the scoring at 3-1.
Ryerson (3-9-2) will have a tough road to the playoffs now, as they will need at least one victory, if not two, against two difficult opponents in Ottawa and Carleton to round out the season.
The Rams will get their opportunity beginning Saturday, October 19 when they take on the Carleton Ravens at 5:45 p.m. and then face the No. 1 nationally ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees on Sunday, October 20 at 1:00 p.m.
