Golden Hawks upset No. 7 ranked Marauders on the road
HAMILTON (September 10, 2016) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's soccer team put on an impressive performance on Saturday as they beat the No. 7 McMaster Marauders 2-0, bumping them to third place in the OUA West Division.
It was clear to the crowd that Laurier (3-2-0) dominated the pitch in the first half and spent most of the first 45 in the Marauders end. In the 20th minute, the Hawks's top shooter, Niklas Bauer of Newmarket Ont., stayed true to his early-season form by easily popping the ball past McMaster goalkeeper Kieren Doyle-Davis (Hamilton, Ont.) to give Laurier a 1-0 lead.
The Marauders (2-2-1) remained in a defensive posture, and waited for chances on the counter-attack. However, Laurier's goalkeeper Rocco Strazella of Woodbridge Ont., maintained a steady hand as Laurier outshot McMaster 3-2 to end the half with the one goal advantage.
Going into the last 45 minutes of play, McMaster found new momentum and was able to answer each of Laurier's shots on net, as both teams drilled six shots apiece.
With 15 minutes left in the game, the Marauders chance of a comeback was silenced as the Hawks were awarded a penalty kick. Laurier's top goal scorer, Nikola Miokovic of Kitchener Ont., stepped up and found the back of the Marauders net to secure a 2-0 victory for the purple and gold. By clinching his fourth goal of the season, Miokovic's stellar performance has him currently standing in a three-way tie for the most amount of goals in the league.
Saturday's game marks a third win and his first shutout win for Laurier's first year goalkeeper Strazzella, who has started in net for four out of five games this season. Thanks to their successful performance against the Marauders, the Hawks are sitting in third place in the OUA West Division with nine points under their belts.
Laurier will be looking to extend their three-game winning streak when they return home to University Stadium next Saturday to kick off against the Windsor Lancers at 3:15 p.m.
