MALE: Jacob Schroeter (Ottawa, Ont.) – 3rd yr – Queen's Gaels – Soccer
The Gaels men’s soccer team opened the season with a pair of victories this season thanks in large part to the play of Queen’s forward Jacob Schroeter (Ottawa, Ont.).
On Saturday afternoon against the Lakers, Schroeter, a third-year political studies major, capped off a Gaels first half barrage that saw them score three times in the opening 19 minutes to take a 3-0 lead into halftime. Queen’s would add two more in the second half and cruise to a comfortable 5-1 win to open the season.
Trailing 2-1 on Sunday to Laurentian, Schroeter almost single handedly took over the game for the Gaels. The 5’10” forward evened the score in the 60th minute before scoring the eventual game winner just two minutes later. He finished the match with a game-high seven shots, all of which found the target.

FEMALE: Jenny Wolever (Toronto, Ont.) – 2nd yr. – Queen's Gaels – Soccer
Queen’s forward Jenny Wolever (Toronto, Ont.) is the Investors Group OUA Female Athlete of the Week after scoring three goals in two games to lead the Gaels to a weekend sweep.
With the Gaels trailing Nipissing 1-0 in the season opener, Wolever, a second-year kinesiology student-athlete, beat a defender in the 18 yard box before sneaking a shot past the Lakers keeper. The Toronto, Ont. native wasn’t done there as just a few minutes later her cross set up fellow Gael Rachel Radu’s eventual game-winner.
On Sunday against the visiting Voyageurs, Wolever was a force to be reckoned with, recording a game high four shots on goal. In the 84th minute with the Gaels holding on to a slim 1-0 lead, the 5’4” forward picked up the ball at the top of the box and made no mistake, beating the goalie and giving the Gaels a 2-0 win.
Wolever and the No. 6 nationally ranked Gaels return to action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Vaso’s Field in Oshawa, Ont. to take on the UOIT Ridgebacks (2-1-1) at 1:00 p.m.
