Queen's picks up 5-1 win over Nipissing in season opener
KINGSTON, Ont. (September 3, 2016) - The Gaels (1-0) picked up a win in their season opener at Miklas-McCarney field against the Nipissing Lakers (0-2) in a 5-1 decision.
GAME FLOW
Queen's got on the board in a hurry in the first half, with Patrick Van Belleghem (Kenora, Ont.) opening the scoring at the 14 minute mark. Tommy Hong (Oakville, Ont.) and Jacob Schroeter (Ottawa) quickly followed suit, finding the back of the net in the 17th and 19th minutes, respectively. Oliver Coren (Toronto) picked up an assist on the Hong goal with a deep through ball.
After Mathieu Simard of Nipissing picked up one yellow card in the first half, another reckless challenge early in the second half earned him a second yellow and a sending off. Down to 10 men for the remainder of the match, the Lakers managed to narrow the gap to 3-1 when Cody Vaillancourt scored off a free kick.
The man advantage showed as the game progressed, with Queen's attempting 18 shots in the second half alone. The tricolour found the back of the net again in the 77th minute on a goal from Kyle Owens (Whitby, Ont.), and then finished the game on another tally from the rookie Michael Chang (Mississauga, Ont.). Chang's goal is the first of his career, which was assisted by Andrew Kim (Mississauga, Ont.).

Perfect start continues for No. 7 Blues
The No. 7 University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's soccer team defeated the visiting Trent Excalibur 2-0 Saturday (Sept. 3) afternoon at Varsity Stadium pushing their perfect start to the OUA season to three games.
Fourth-year midfielder Nikolay Saveliev scored the game-winner early in the 5th minute. Using a nice first touch off his chest, Saveliev set himself up for a clean look at the Excalibur net beating Trent goalkeeper David Ellis.
From there Toronto would continue to pressure, mounting several strong attacks. Fourth-year striker Antonio Ajhert would break through in the 49th minute to add an insurance marker, battling the Excalibur backline before finishing to make it 2-0.
U of T goalkeeper Mark Rogal would be tested a few times in the match by the Excalibur, but each time incredible effort kept the clean sheet. Rogal finished the match with six saves.
Ellis recorded one save for Trent.
The Varsity Blues will now look to push their undefeated streak to four to begin the season taking on the UOIT Ridgebacks tomorrow (Sept. 4) afternoon at Varsity Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:15 p.m.

Rams early goal backs 3-0 victory
TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams men's soccer team picked up their third win of the season on Saturday with a 3-0 decision over the visiting UOIT Ridgebacks at Monarch Park Stadium.
BOXSCORE
There was early controversy in this one as Raheem Rose (Toronto) potted a goal just two minutes in on a play that UOIT thought had been covered by the keeper. Instead, Rose tapped the ball in and after some discussion he was finally able to celebrate with his teammates as it was signalled a good goal.
The Ridgebacks continued to voice their disagreement with the head referee and in the 13th minute one member of the coaching staff was ejected.
Tempers seemed to settle after that, but the Rams dominated possession and were able to pad their lead before the halftime whistle blew. Nick Lambis (Pickering, Ont.) scored twice in the span of seven minutes to extend Ryerson's lead to 3-0.
In the second half the Rams clamped down defensively and looked poised for a cleansheet until UOIT's George Meditskos found some space and deposited the ball into the back of the net. Unfortunately for the Ridgebacks, the linesman's flag was raised and the offside call negated the goal.
Ryerson outshot the Ridgebacks 12-5 and were able to hold onto their three-goal cushion for the 3-0 victory. Keeper Praveen Ahilan (Unionville, Ont.) made five saves for his third cleansheet of the season.
The Rams (3-0-0) return to action tomorrow afternoon as they host the Trent Excalibur starting at 1:15 p.m. at Monarch Park Stadium.

The Lions opened the scoring in the 24th minute on a goal by Cristian Cavallini (Woodbridge, Ont.), the first of his career. Maurizio Ragone (North York, Ont.) was credited with the assist.
In the 40th minute the Golden Hawks tied it on a tally by Gurjinder Garcha, but just before the end of the half the Lions took the lead again when fifth-year midfielder Dena Iezady (Richmond Hill, Ont.) scored his first of the season in the 44th minute with an assist to Jonathan Lao (Unionville, Ont.).

Early goal leads Western over Algoma
LONDON, Ont. – An early goal from Braeden Gee proved to be the difference as the Western Mustangs defeated the Algoma Thunderbirds 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Field.
"It was nice to get three points, so that's a positive thing," said Mustangs head coach Rock Basacco. "Certainly finishing is not where it should be and we had many, many, chances and we just didn't put it away. We'll have to focus a bit more on our attacking and just do a better job. That's what it comes down to, it's execution and decision making wasn't our best. We just missed too many opportunities."
The win is Western's third consecutive victory, and gives the Mustangs a 3-1-0 record early in the season, while Algoma falls to 0-3 on the year.
Gee's goal was his third in four games, and clearly the first-year striker has had no problems adjusting to CIS competition.
"I'm enjoying it. It's a challenge, more physical, but I think I'm starting to get more and more of the hang of it each game and from here it will only get better."
The Dorchester, Ont., native's goal came just under five minutes into the contest as he headed a corner kick from Jeremy Arnold into the Algoma net to put the home side up by one.
Following the game Basacco was happy with his first-year contingent, including the duo that combined for Western's one goal of the day.
"Jeremy Arnold has been playing outstanding for us," said Basacco. "His work output in a game is second to none. He's probably the most efficient player we have on the field. He demonstrates that game in and game out. We're very, very happy that he decided to come to Western and that we have him on the team.
"[Braeden's] been another nice pleasant surprise for us. He's got three goals in four games, and you really can't expect more than that from a rookie. We're happy with those two performances, and tomorrow might be an opportunity to try some of our other rookies to see where their performance level is and what they can contribute to the squad."
The Mustangs controlled the play throughout the first 45 minutes, outshooting the Thunderbirds 17-1 and generating the majority of scoring chances in the half.
Western's best chance to extend their lead came in the 30th minute as Will Barrie sent a low cross to Parker Seymour, who got a shot off that went just high.
Algoma had a chance to tie the game late in the half thanks to a shot from Ryan Marchan, however Kody Thomson was there to shut the door and keep the Mustangs up by one.
The second half played out much the same as the first, with Western keeping play concentrated in the Algoma end but unable to convert on their scoring chances.
"It's still early in the season," said Basacco about the team's trouble scoring on Saturday. "It's getting the familiarity with players and combination moves, and how they're going to work for us and create an opportunity to score. Right now, it didn't work so well today. At least they created the chances, so if you look at the positive, they created the chances. But you cannot give a team an opportunity to get back in the game, and when you only have a one-goal lead it gives them that opportunity."
With another three points under their belts, the Mustangs now get set to face the Thunderbirds for the second time in two days.
"I think everyone just needs to get a good rest, maybe have an ice bath tonight," said Gee about how the team will prepare to face the same opponent again tomorrow. "I don't think we were focused enough when we came into the game today and took it too lightly. Tomorrow has to be better, and hopefully we'll win by more."
Game time for Sunday's rematch is set for 2:15 p.m. at Mustangs Field.
