BURLINGTON, Ont. - The following athletes have been named Investors Group Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week for the period ending September 19th, 2016.
MALE: Daud Dahir (Ottawa, Ont.) – 5th yr – Carleton Ravens – Soccer
Carleton midfielder Daud Dahir (Ottawa, Ont.) has been named the Investors Group OUA Athlete of the Week after leading the Ravens to three victories this past week.
On Wednesday night, the fifth-year commerce major scored three times in the second half as Carleton cruised to a 9-1 victory at home against the Trent Excalibur.
The Ottawa, Ont. native followed that up on Friday, scoring the opening goal of the game in the 11th minute against RMC. That would be all the offence the Ravens would need, defeating the Paladins 4-0.
Just as he did against RMC, Dahir opened the scoring for the Ravens against Queen's on Sunday, finding the back of the net in the 9th minute to give Carleton an early 1-0 lead in an eventual 4-2 victory.
Thanks to a big weekend, Dahir now finds himself in a five-way tie atop of the OUA scoring leaderboard with five goals.
Dahir and the Ravens will look to extend their winning streak to four games when they host the visiting Laurentian Voyageurs at MNP Park on Friday night.
FEMALE: Tierney Dunham (Waterdown, Ont.) – 4th yr. – Laurier Golden Hawks – Soccer
Laurier midfielder Tierney Dunham (Waterdown, Ont.) has been named the Investors Group OUA Athlete of the Week after scoring both goals this weekend for the Golden Hawks.
After falling behind the visiting Windsor Lancers 1-0 on Saturday afternoon, Dunham, a fourth-year general arts student-athlete, scored the equalizer for Laurier just two minutes later, as the Golden Hawks held on for a 1-1 draw.
On Sunday, Dunham once again was the only source of offence for the Golden Hawks. Just as she had done the day before, the Waterdown, Ont. native found the back of the net in the 26th minute to tie the game 1-1. The Hawks would hold the No. 10 ranked Mustangs off the board the rest of the way to preserve the 1-1 draw.
After being held scorelss for the first three years of her Golden Hawks career, Dunham appears to be heating up at the perfect time as she has now found the back of the net in three of her last four games.
Dunham and the Golden Hawks return to action this weekend as they head north to Sault Ste. Marie to take on the Algoma Thunderbirds.
