MALE: Alex Zis (Oakville, Ont.) – 1st yr – Guelph Gryphons – Soccer
Gryphons rookie midfielder Alex Zis (Oakville, Ont.) has been named Investors Group OUA Male of the Week after he helped Guelph win their first CIS men’s soccer championship medal in 24 years.
Zis, a first-year student-athlete, scored three goals in three games this past week, including a pair in Sunday’s bronze medal game against the Cape Breton University Capers.
The Oakville, Ont. native opened the scoring on a free kick in the 29th minute before adding another in the 51st minute as the Gryphons prevailed 3-0 on home turf at Alumni Stadium in Gueph.
In the Gryphons quarter-final win over the Acadia Axmen, Zis also found the back of the net in the 8th minute on a beautiful free kick from 25 yards out, curling it just inside the right post and past the keeper.
During the regular season, the 5’6” centre midfielder had eight goals for the Gryphons.
FEMALE: Claire Sumner (Calgary, Alta.) – 4th yr. – Queen's Gaels – Cross Country
Queen’s Gaels cross country runner Claire Sumner (Calgary, Alta.) capped off a sensational season on Saturday with a win at the U Sports Cross Country national championship.
Sumner, a fourth-year life sciences student-athlete, is the Investors Group OUA Female Athlete of the Week after she crossed the finish line first in a time of 21:09.3.
Thanks to a hard late push, the Calgary, Alta. native passed her teammate Julie-Anne Staehli, who led the most of the race, in the final kilometre.
The victory comes just two weeks after a late push in the final hundred metres saw her also finish first at the OUA cross country championship.
Following the race, Sumner was recognized for her strong showing with the U Sports MVP as the top runner and a spot on the All-Canadian team.
