Banner Season: Queen's retains women's title, while McMaster men earn gold for first win since 1964
London, Ont. - It was a cold, rainy, and muddy morning at the 2018 OUA Cross Country Championships, but that didn’t seem to dampen the spirit or the drive of the athletes taking part.
The women ran an 8km track around Thames Valley Golf Course and it was a pair of Queen’s Gaels that took home the top two spots in the individual standings. Brogan MacDougall finished with a time of 28:03 to take the top spot in the standings. The first-year runner was named MVP and Rookie of the Year for the first-place finish, to along with a first team all-star nod. Her sister, Branna MacDougall, would finish behind her in 2nd with a final time of 28:34 and Western’s Kristina Popadich rounded out the top three with a final time of 28:41.
In team scoring, the Queen’s Gaels took the championship banner with a total time of 2:25:32. Their top-5 had an average run time of 29:06 in the win. The Guelph Gryphons finished 2nd overall with a 2:27:32 total time and the Western Mustangs finished 3rd at 2:33:33.
On the men’s side, running a 10km race, it was Max Turek of McMaster just beating out Mark Patton from Guelph to take the top overall spot in the standings and the OUA MVP award. Both Turek & Patton finished with a time of 31:57. Isaiah Frielink finished in 3rd place, just four seconds behind the leading pair at 32:01.
For team scoring it was McMaster who took home the gold medal with a top-5 total of 2:41:13. Queen's followed up with a second-place total of 2:41:42, while Guelph rounded out the podium at 2:41:45.
The men’s OUA Rookie of the Year was Ruben Sansom from Queen’s, who posted a final time of 32:28.
Next up for the winners here will be the USPORTS Cross Country Championships which takes place on November 10th at Queens.
