Stirling, Patton named IG Wealth Management Athletes of the Week, powered by Planters
Burlington, Ont. – Jaslan Stirling and Mark Patton have been named IG Wealth Management Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week, powered by Planters, for the period ending September 23, 2018.
Female Athlete of the Week – Jaslan Stirling (Mississauga, Ont.) –2nd Year – York Lions
York field hockey player Jaslan Stirling picked up her second consecutive athlete of the week honours for York this week, but managed to outdo her lofty opening weekend efforts to secure provincial honours this time around.
Stirling paced the Lions offense this weekend, netting six goals over their three-game span – all of which were wins. The team as a whole was able to beat the Queen’s Gaels 4-0 on Saturday and topped the Waterloo Warriors (4-2) and Western Mustangs (6-1) on Sunday. Stirling scored the eventual game-winning goal on Saturday against the Gaels and scored three of the Lions four goals against the Warriors. She capped off her stellar weekend with another two goals against the Mustangs.
Stirling now leads the OUA with 10 goals on the season, picking up right where she left off from her award-winning debut a year ago, and the Lions sit in second place in the OUA standings with a 4-0-1 record.
Male Athlete of the Week – Mark Patton (Fergus, Ont.) – 4th Year – Guelph Gryphons
The Guelph Gryphons men's cross country team is loaded with talent and this week’s OUA Athlete of the Week Patton is among the best for the defending OUA and U SPORTS team champions.
The fourth-year runner made his cross country season debut at the Western International Invitational this weekend and had a huge performance, finishing first among a massive field of 175 runners at the Thames Valley Golf Course. Patton was part of a big pack up front and was a few spots from away from the leader with 300 metres left before turning it on to outkick all of his fellow competitors and finish in a course-record time of 24:15.
It was an incredible opening race and a result that helped push the Gryphon men into first place in the team event.
