Laurier 5 at UOIT 4
OSHAWA, Ont. – UOIT’s game against Laurier in OUA women’s hockey on Saturday night was a wild one as the No. 4 ranked Golden Hawks escaped with a 5-4 victory over the Ridgebacks.
Fifth year senior Devon Skeats of Whitby scored the game-winning goal with less than five minutes to go in the third period to give the Golden Hawks their third straight victory.
With Skeats in the penalty box in the final minute of play, the Ridgebacks had a glorious chance to tie the game with a scramble in front of the net created by a blast from the point by Melissa Berney (Bowmanville, Ont.). Laurier goaltender Amanda Smith was able to keep the puck out of the net after the Ridgebacks had several shots in the scrum.
Skeats would finish the night with two goals and an assist as she recorded two of her points on the power play. Senior defender Candice Styles also had a multi-point game with two assists. Other goal scorers for Laurier included Danelle Im, Erika Kiviaho and Jessie Hurrell.
Trailing 4-2 in the second period, UOIT was able to battle back to tie the game at four’s. Laura Marchese (Burlington, Ont.) recorded her first goal of her career, scoring for UOIT late in the second period. Jaclyn Gibson (Cobourg, Ont.) scored shorthanded four minutes into the third period. With four goals this season, Gibson is only one shy of her career high.
Sam Forchielli (Hamilton, Ont.) and Victoria MacKenzie (Toronto, Ont.) scored first period goals for UOIT. MacKenzie ended up with a goal and an assist while teammate Jenna Carter (Whitby, Ont.) had two assists.
Ridgeback starting goaltender Cassie Charette (Ottawa, Ont.) allowed four goals on 22 shots, before being pulled for freshman Tori Campbell (Lethbridge, Ont.). Campbell would make 14 saves and allowed only one goal, which was the game winner. Smith made 24 saves for Laurier.
Sarah Worthington (Whitby, Ont.) took all three UOIT penalties and Laurier managed to capitalize on two of them, with both power play markers coming in the second period. UOIT was 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
The Ridgebacks are 4-2-0 to start the season and sit tied with Laurier (4-1-0) for third place in the OUA conference standings.
UOIT will host the nationally ranked Queen’s Gaels next Friday night at the Campus Ice Centre. Puck drop is 7:30 p.m.

Waterloo 2 at York 4
Kristen Barbara scored two goals to lead the York University Lions women's hockey team to a 4-2 come-from-behind victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday night (Oct. 19) at Canlan Ice Sports.
The third-year defender scored the tying goal at 4:02 of the third period on the power play, her first of the season, and added her second at 16:40 of the final frame for the insurance marker in the win.
As they had one night earlier, the Lions allowed their opponents to jump out to an early lead in the first period. The Warriors found the back of the net just 2:24 into the opening period on a goal by Amy Barnard (Cambridge, Ont.), and less than three minutes later increased their lead to two when Kelly Toms (Ennismore, Ont.) scored at 4:45.
The Lions got one back before the first was over, however, when rookie Renata Bastos Gottgtroy (Auckland, New Zealand) scored her second goal in as many games, this one with a teammate in the penalty box, at 12:54 to cut Waterloo's lead to 2-1.
Neither team was able to generate many scoring chances in the period and they combined for just 15 shots on goal, and the Warriors led 2-1 going into the break.
The defensive affair continued in the second as both goalies stood tall to prevent any more goals, and the Warriors continued to lead heading into the third.
Barbara finally solved Waterloo goaltender Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia, Ont.) early in the third, and the Lions added another power play goal three-and-half-minutes later when rookie Mariah Krancevich (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) scored the first goal of her career, what turned out to be the winner before Barbara rounded out the scoring.
The win improves the Lions' record to 2-3-0 on the season, while the Warriors dropped to 2-2-1 with the loss.
The Lions will be on the road for their next four contests, beginning next weekend with a trip to Kingston, Ont., to face the Queen's Gaels on Saturday (Oct. 26) beginning at 7:30 p.m. They will return home for the next time on Saturday, Nov. 16 to face the Nipissing Lakers at 2 p.m.

Laurentian 2 at Windsor 3
The Lancer women's hockey team won a pair of games over the weekend as part of Hocktoberfest weekend in Windsor-Essex.
Led by a Bree Polci hat trick, the Lancer women's hockey team shut out the Nipissing Lakers 7-0 on Friday night at the WFCU Centre in Windsor, and followed that up with a 3-2 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday afternoon at Tecumseh Arena.
With the wins, the Lancers earned their third straight victory and are currently 3-2-1 on the year.
On Friday night, rookie goaltender Marissa Kozovski was outstanding between the pipes, turning aside 26 shots to earn her first OUA career shutout.
Polci opened the scoring late in the first period with her third goal of the season and Windsor went into the second period up a goal.
In the second, the Lancers found their scoring touch with three markers over ten minutes. Candace Kourounis netted her first of the year at the five minute mark of the period, and Polci followed up with her second of the game just a minute and a half later.
Erinn Noseworthy closed out the period with her second of the year at 15:04.
The scoring continued through the final period as the Lancers continued to build on their lead. Rookie Andrea Benac scored her third in as many games, before Polci completed her hat trick and Kourounis knotched her second of the game.
Kourounis and Polci led all skaters with four points a piece.
On Saturday, the Lancers came out strong as Benac opened the scoring just 1:08 into the first period against the Voyageurs.
Senior Kayla Dodson scored her first goal of the season just two minutes later to give Windsor a two goal lead that held until mid-way through the second period when Jenny MacKnight's power play goal gave the Lancers a comfortable three goal lead.
The Voyageurs did not back down however, scoring at 14:32 of the middle frame to cut the Lancer lead to two heading into the final period.
In the third, the Voyageurs continued to apply pressure and Samantha Morell scored her second of the game on the power play to bring the score within one with twelve minutes remaining.
The Lancers held on for the win, as Kozovski had another strong performance with 22 saves in net.
Windsor is back home next weekend when they host the Western Mustangs Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. at South Windsor Arena.

Nipissing 2 at Western 3
LONDON, Ont. – The Western Mustangs women's hockey team defeated the Nipissing Lakers this evening at Thompson Arena in a 3-2 come-from-behind win for their second consecutive victory. The team, now at 5-1-0, moves into first place in the OUA with the win.
Despite the victory, assistant coach Ted Brown still sees that the Mustangs have some work to do. "I didn't think that we really played up to our potential," said Brown post-game. "We did what we had to do to win. We'll regroup this week in practice and make sure to fix the little things that really didn't go well. This is the type of team that can rebound and do that."
Western proved to be the stronger team for much of the first period and was not afraid to take any and every possible shot on net, but the results were not what they were looking for. Penalty trouble for the Mustangs at the end of the first period gave Nipissing a two-player advantage and the motivation to get the first and only goal of the period. As Nicole Latreille and Stacey Scott both sat in the box, the Lakers put pressure on the Mustangs, eventually beating Western's starting netminder Kelly Campbell to take a 1-0 lead.
Giveaways in the neutral zone and puck-clearing trouble plagued the Mustangs for most of the second period. While the purple and white still outshot the Lakers 18-6 in the period, the Lakers were once again the only team to score a goal. The Mustangs defence were pinching, hoping to create an offensive attack, which in the end resulted in a 3-on-1 heading back towards Campbell. She cleared the first shot, but was not able to reel in the rebound. Laker Alexane Papineau got credit for the goal and the Lakers took a 2-0 lead heading into the third and final frame.
The Mustangs answered back in the third period and two Western goals scored within 31 seconds of each other had the team back in tying position before the midway point. Brittany Clapham potted the Mustangs first goal of the game off of multiple rebounds while rookie Jessica Sorensen continued her strong start, scoring the tying goal on a 2-on-1 with 13 minutes remaining.
Just as both teams began to get a lot more physical, Carly Rolph netted the game-winner for the Mustangs at 13:53 off of a beautiful shot high on the stick side. With the Mustangs now up 3-2, Nipissing pulled out all the stops in order to tie the game, but fell short of getting a third goal even with an extra player for the last minute.
Rochefort turned aside 42 shots for the Lakers and Campbell 24 for the Mustangs.
"Personally I didn't think we played well in the second period," added Brown. "We had some bad bounces. We had a good talk in between the second and third periods, and between the first and second period. And I think the players responded, especially in the third knowing that there was something meaningful on the line here."
Western now hits the road for five games, the first being against rivals the Windsor Lancers on Saturday, October 26. The red-hot Lancers (3-2-1) are on a three-game win streak of their own and will look to take down the Mustangs and move up in the OUA standings. Puck drop is 4:00 p.m. at South Windsor Arena.

Guelph 1 at Queen’s 3
NAPANEE, Ont. (October 19, 2013) – Rookie forward Clare McKellar (London, Ont.) netted two goals to lead the No. 6 Queen's Gaels over No. 9 Guelph Gryphons at the Strathcona Paper Centre in Napanee, Ont.
The defending OUA champion Gaels improve their record out of the gate to 4-0-1 while the Gryphons fall to 3-2-0.
McKellar opened the scoring at 14:02 of the first period on a pass from Jessica Wakefield (Lucan, Ont.) to take a 1-0 lead.
Queen's defenseman Courteany Jacklin (Regina, Sask.) notched her first career CIS goal early in the second period while McKellar added her second goal of the game late in the second to close out the Gaels offensive thrust.
Gaels' Shawna Griffin (Redwood Meadows, Alta.) registered two assists in the game.
Guelph's Amanada Parkins added a meaningless goal at 5:27 of the third period to close out the scoring 3-1 in favour of the Gaels.
Queen's Mel Dodd-Moher (Stittsville, Ont.) collected her second win of the season making 23 saves. Guelph's goalie Stephanie Nehring made 18 saves on 21 shots in the loss.
The Gaels next game is a road trip to Oshawa to face the UOIT Ridgebacks on Friday, Oct. 25.

Waterloo 2 at UOIT 1
The UOIT women’s hockey team suffered their first conference loss of the season on Friday night as the Waterloo Warriors came up with a 2-1 victory in the Ridgebacks home opener.
After going 4-0-0 to start the season on the road, the Ridgebacks were not able to pull out the victory on home ice despite outshooting the Warriors 35-22.
Penalties would put the Ridgebacks behind the eight ball as they took ten minor penalties compared to just five by Waterloo. Rachel Marriott would take advantage of a power play opportunity as she scored her first career OUA goal with 11 seconds left in the first period. Katie Dillon (Oshawa, Ont.) was in the box after being called with an illegal equipment penalty.
Waterloo was able to double-up their lead four minutes into the second period when Kaitlyn McDonell scooped in a rebound in a scramble in front of the Ridgeback net.
After several scoring chances in the Waterloo zone, Sam Forchielli (Hamilton, Ont.) was finally able to get UOIT on the board with five minutes to go in the second frame as she took a pass from Sarah Worthington (Whitby, Ont.) and slipped one through the five-hole. Dillon would record a second assist on the play which cut the Warriors lead to one.
UOIT would continue to apply a lot of pressure in the third period, but were unable to beat Waterloo goaltender Rebecca Bouwhuis, who made 34 stops in her second win of the year.
Tori Campbell (Lethbridge, Alta.) made 20 saves in her first career loss. The freshman netminder has a goals against average of 1.38 in five games this season.
The Ridgebacks are 4-1-0 on the year and sit in the top spot of the OUA standings tied with the Western Mustangs (4-1-0). Waterloo is in seventh place with a 2-1-1 record.
The nationally ranked Laurier Golden Hawks (3-1-0) will be visiting the Campus Ice Centre on Saturday night. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Laurier 4 at York 1
Laurier Golden Hawks captain Laura Brooker's three-point performance proved too much for the York University Lions women's hockey team to compete with, as the No. 4 Golden Hawks defeated York by a score of 4-1 Friday night (Oct. 18) at Canlan Ice Sports.
Brooker (Fergus, Ont.) notched two goals and an assist in the game, helping Laurier improve to 3-1 on the year, while York drops to 1-3 with the loss.
Brooker would waste no time getting started in this one, capitalizing on an early turnover in the neutral zone to jump out on the breakaway. She would convert on the rush against goaltender Megan Lee (Orillia, Ont.), giving her team a 1-0 lead with just 41 seconds elapsed.
The attack wouldn't diminish, as Brooker found teammate Heather Platt (Mississauga, Ont.) four minutes later at the top of the circle in the Lions' zone. Platt would go bar down on Lee with a strong slap shot, extending the lead to two.
The Golden Hawks would add yet another quick goal a minute later as a tough scramble in front of the net bounced the puck back to the point to Candice Styles' (Orangeville, Ont.) stick. Styles would take advantage of a goalie screen for Laurier's third goal in five minutes.
York replaced Lee after the score, turning to back-up goaltender Jessalyn Bogacki (Thunder Bay, Ont.) for a fresh start. The score remained 3-0 after the first.
Bogacki provided a much-needed boost between the pipes for the Lions, making 21 saves in the second period alone. Inspired by her performance, the Lions began to rebound, creating scoring opportunities of their own.
Taking advantage of a fast change following a penalty kill, Renata Bastos Gottgtroy (Auckland, New Zealand) would finally solve Laurier's defence, sneaking by the defenders and scoring York's first goal of the contest with three minutes remaining in the second.
York would continue to pressure in the third, hoping to shrink Laurier's advantage. But Brooker would again assert her dominance by stripping a York pass over the middle and jumping out on her second breakaway of the game. Brooker scored her second goal, beating Bogacki on the backhanded deke for the final goal.
The Lions will look to rebound Saturday (Oct. 19) when they host the Waterloo Warriors at 7pm at Canlan Ice Sports.

Laurentian 2 at Western 6
LONDON, Ont. – The Western women's hockey team skated to an exciting 6-2 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs Friday night at Thompson Arena.
Western spread the scoring around on Friday with six goals coming from six different players, helping the No. 10 nationally-ranked Mustangs to improve to 4-1-1 on the season.
"I thought for 50 minutes of the game we were very, very good, but there were stretches where we just didn't seem to be ourselves. We're not playing 60 minutes yet. The team is not at that level yet," said Mustangs head coach Chris Higgins.
The Voyageurs took an interference penalty not one minute into the first frame giving the Mustangs several shots on net. It was not until the teams were back at even strength though that the Mustangs' Madison Turk put one past Voyageur goalkeeper Emily Toffoli to take a 1-0 lead. Western's second goal of the game came from Brittany Clapham at 16:57 of the first. Turk shot the puck down the ice, narrowly missing the net, and as the team rushed down into the offensive zone, the commotion in front of the net allowed Clapham to tip the puck into the net to make the score 2-0.
Western encountered some difficulty on the penalty kill in the second period, allowing Laurentian to get deep in the Mustang zone. However, Mustangs netminder Olivia Ross stood on her head keeping the Voyageurs at bay. A few moments later Marlowe Pecora put Western up 3-0 on a beautiful wraparound goal at 8:28. Shortly thereafter, as Ross turned aside yet another shot, Western began to take penalties, eventually providing Laurentian with a 2-man advantage. Western successfully killed off the penalties and just as they did, Laurentian's Samantha Morell put her team on the board. At the end of the second period, Western continued to lead 3-1.
The offence picked up for both teams in the final frame with four goals coming in the third period. Although the Mustangs controlled the play while in the Laurentian zone they had trouble clearing it out of their own end with Ross denying scoring chances from the Voyageurs. Midway through the period the Mustangs offence broke through scoring three goals in a seven minute span. Second-year forward Natasha Panahi tallied her first goal of the season at 7:47 and less than a minute later, veteran Carly Rolph gave the Mustangs their fifth goal of the game. Stacey Scott scored Western's only powerplay goal at 15:41. The Voyageurs scored their second goal of the game with a minute and a half left closing out the scoring and making it a 6-2 final for Western.
When asked about his team's defensive game, Higgins replied, "Some of them had a tough game. We gave up two breakaways, but we talked about that between periods about getting a good forward high to help our defence out when that happens. And we're trying to get out defence to not hit the shin pads so much and take the puck behind the net and work from there.
And looking to tomorrow's matchup against the Nipissing Lakers, Higgins added, "They're a much better team tomorrow. And I'm hoping that we just continue to get better. Hoping we get the mistakes out of our system."
The Mustangs are right back at it on Saturday afternoon at Thompson Arena, hosting the Nipissing Lakers at 4:00 p.m. Fans from around the world can watch all of the action live on Mustangs TV.
