Brock 3 @ Ryerson 2
TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams women’s hockey team dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision to the visiting Brock Badgers on Thursday night at Mattamy Home Ice.
The win was the sixth straight for the Badgers who move to within one point of the Waterloo Warriors for the final playoff spot in the OUA. The Rams struggles in 2014 continue as they drop their eighth in a row and fall to 5-15-0.
Rams interim head coach Pierre Alain pulled goaltender Emma Crawley(Herring Cove, NS) with over two and a half minutes remaining the third period in favour of the extra attacker. The move would pay off as Melissa Wronzberg(Thornhill, Ont.) scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season to bring the Rams within one with 2:19 to play.
Ryerson continued to press in the final two minutes, generating a number of scoring chances but were unable to get one past Brock goaltender Jenna Sosnoski (New Dundee, Ont.).
Fifth-year forward Brianne Veale (Sault Ste Marie, Ont.) scored two goals for the Badgers including the game winner on a breakaway midway through the final frame. Brittany Gillmor (St. George Brant, Ont.) had the other Brock goal.
Victoria Arci opened the scoring with a highlight reel goal to give the Rams a 1-0 lead early the first period. The third-year defenceman from Woodbridge, Ont. finished off an end-to-end rush by firing a shot to the top corner past Sosnoski.
Crawley stopped 37 of 40 shots for the Rams, while Sosnoski turned aside 25 of 27 shots.
The Badgers were 1-for-3 on the power play, while Ryerson went 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
The Rams return to the ice on Saturday, January 25 when they host the Guelph Gryphons for a 7:30pm start at Mattamy Home Ice. The Badgers next game is Saturday at the University of Toronto
