CIS WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FINAL 8: Top-seeded Windsor downs OUA foe Laurier 81-53

Langlois, a Windsor native who was named the CIS defensive player of the year for the third straight season on Thursday, shot a formidable 10-of-15 from the field while teammate Korissa Williams picked up a game-best 10 rebounds and 10 points for a double-double to help the No. 1 Lancers extend their playoff winning streak to 13 games over the last three post-seasons.
“We have such a deep and experienced lineup, on any given night, someone can step up. I guess tonight it was my night,” said Langlois, who was also voted to the second all-Canadian team for the season. “We never take any game or any team for granted. But on the other hand, we’ve been there before. Myself, I’ve been doing this for five years. So in a sense, even though it’s the national championship, it’s just another basketball game.”
The Lancers, who are seeking their fourth-straight Bronze Baby Trophy as the top women's basketball team in the country, move on to the national semi-finals on Saturday afternoon where they will face either No. 5 Fraser Valley or No. 4 McGill.
“We’ve been waiting for this night for a year, really, because we knew we were hosting. So it’s good to get that first one out of the way. I’m very, very pleased with what I saw tonight,” said Windsor bench boss Chantal Vallée, the CIS coach of the year.
The Golden Hawks are making their fourth overall appearance at the championships having played last at the 2011event at the University of Windsor where they finished fifth overall. Laurier moves into the second consolation semi-final taking place at 12:00 p.m. Saturday.
Whitney Ellenor and Bree Chaput recorded 11 and 10 points respectively for the Golden Hawks, who earned their spot in this year's championships with a 70-65 double-overtime victory over Carleton in the OUA bronze-medal match last weekend.
“Windsor played really well out of the gate. They jumped on us and we had a really hard time stopping them in the first quarter,” said Hawks head coach Paul Falco.
The three-time defending champions flexed their muscles early in the contest, scoring 29 points in the opening quarter. The Lancers went up 10-2 within a couple of minutes after tip-off, as Jocelyn LaRocque's three-pointer was followed by another long-ranger from Jessica Clemencon. Langlois then notched a couple of running lay-ups, using her speed to penetrate through the Golden Hawks defence. The duo of Langlois and Clemencon combined for 20 points in the period, helping Windsor to a healthy 16-point spread.
The Golden Hawks were able to find their legs in the second quarter, holding the OUA champions to less than half their opening quarter production. Ellenor, a native of Pickering, Ont., tallied four points in the quarter and picked up seven through the first half of play to lead the Golden Hawks offence, which shot 33.3%.
Windsor's offence dropped off in the second-quarter but they maintained a considerable lead going into the locker rooms, holding a 43-25 advantage at the half-time break. Langlois was superb in the opening half, going 8-of-9 and a perfect 4-of-4 from beyond the arc. The Windsor native scored 11 of the Lancers 14 points in the second quarter, and led all players with 20 points.
The OUA bronze-medallists began the second-half with a 6-1 streak to pull within 13 points of the Lancers. Chaput capped off the Golden Hawks mini-run with a pair of made free-throws in an effort to bring the visitors within striking distance.
However, after a slow start to the third quarter, Windsor was sparked by a couple of speedy lay-ups from Williams. The Lancers then brought full-court pressure and converted on a couple of Hawks turnovers to further pad their lead. Caitlyn Longmuir's second three-pointer of the third gave the tournament hosts a 68-38 lead heading into the final quarter of play and en route to their 25th straight victory, including regular season and playoff matches. .
Windsor shot 49.2% throughout the contest, while the Golden Hawks worked at a 34.5% efficiency. The Lancers out-rebounded Laurier 45-30
Windsor faces the winner of the final quarter-final match, which features the RSEQ champion Martlets and Canada West finalist Cascades, Saturday evening at5:00 p.m. The contest will be available live on Sportsnet 360 and at www.CIS-SIC.tv.
