Windsor set to host OUA women's basketball championship, presented by ArcelorMittal Dofasco
Playing for a championship is familiar territory for the Windsor Lancers. The squad, lead by four-time OUA West coach of the year Chantal Vallée, has played in the last five title games, winning four of them. Windsor enters this gold medal match ranked No. 1 in the CIS and on the heels of a 21-1 regular season and playoff wins over McMaster and Laurier.
The Lancers feature a talented and experienced roster, boasting three 2013-14 OUA West all-stars. Fifth-year forward Jessica Clemençon (St. Rambert, France) leads the squad in both scoring and rebounding, scoring 18.2 points and grabbing 7.7 boards per game. The former OUA and CIS player of the year is a dominant presence in the post for Windsor.
Right behind her is fifth-year guard Miah-Marie Langlois (Windsor, Ont.) who averaged 15.3 points and 5.8 rebounds during the regular season plus added a team-high 4.9 assists per game.
Fourth-year guard Korissa Williams (Windsor, Ont.) rounds out the dynamic trio. She averaged 14.3 points per game for the while also contributing 5.1 rebounds and 3.4 assists.
The Queen’s Gaels are in search of their first OUA women’s basketball title since 2000-01. The Gaels, under the guidance of 2013-14 OUA East coach of the year Dave Wilson, enter the gold medal game ranked No. 10 in the CIS on in the midst of a nine-game winning streak. That streak includes playoff wins over Toronto and Carleton. The Gaels finished the regular season in first place in the OUA East with a record of 16-6.
The Gaels have three 2013-14 all-stars of their own in Liz Boag, Jenny Wright and Gemma Bullard. Wright (Kingston, Ont.) led the trio in scoring, averaging 13.0 points per game, but was followed closely by Boag and Bullard who pouring 12.0 and 11.4 ppg respectively.
Boag (Kingston, Ont.) was the top ball distributor for the Gaels. The fourth-year guard handed out a career-high 77 assists this season. She was also the top three-point shooter for Queen’s making 45 of her 119 shots from long distance, a 37.8 percent success rate.
In addition to her 11.4 points per game, Gemma Bullard (Guelph, Ont.) added 67 total rebounds and 33 steals for the Gaels, while overcoming injuries to play in a career-high 19 games this season.
In their only meeting this season, Windsor claimed an 82-56 win over Queen’s in early November at the St. Denis Centre, the site of Saturday’s championship game.
The OUA women’s basketball championship, presented by ArcelorMittal Dofasco, will tip off at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 9 from the St. Denis on the campus of the University of Windsor. The game can be seen live on GoLancers.tv.Â
Before the action gets underway in the finals, OUA East player of the year Elizabeth Roach (Ottawa) and the Carleton Ravens will host the Laurier Golden Hawks in the OUA bronze medal game. At stake is a berth in the CIS women's basketball Final 8. The Ravens finished the regular season with a 16-6 record and were the second seed in the east division, while Laurier was third in the west division with a 15-7 mark. Tipoff from the Ravens Nest is slated for Saturday at 3 p.m.
