OTTAWA (CIS) – Kylie Masse, a swimmer from the University of Toronto, and Thomas Cooper, a basketball player from the University of Calgary, are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Feb. 14, 2016.
OTTAWA (CIS) – Kylie Masse, a swimmer from the University of Toronto, and Thomas Cooper, a basketball player from the University of Calgary, are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Feb. 14, 2016.
Masse, a second-year kinesiology major from LaSalle, Ont., was named female athlete of the meet at the conference championships held in London, Ont., following one of the most dominant performances in OUA swimming history. The 5-foot-8 sophomore, who helped the U of T women capture their third straight team title, won all six finals she competed in in OUA record time, including the 50-metre (26.82), 100m (56.55) and 200m (2:04.44) backstroke events, the 100m butterfly (57.84) as well as the 4x50m (1:50.39) and 4x100m (4:06.89) medley relays, while also adding her name in the Canadian record book thanks to her times in the 50 and 100 back. Masse, who a year ago claimed seven medals in as many events (0-4-3) in her first appearance at the Speedo CIS championships, will be one of the athletes to watch at the 2016 national meet next week in Quebec City (Feb. 26-28).
Dalhousie swimmer Phoebe Lenderyou, McGill hockey player Gabrielle Davidson and Saskatchewan basketball player Dalyce Emmerson were also nominated for the women's award.
Cooper, a fourth-year arts student from Chattanooga, Tennessee, averaged a remarkable 36 points per contest as the nationally fourth-ranked Dinos (16-3) clinched first place in the Canada West Pioneer Division thanks to a two-game sweep on home court against Regina, 115-91 and 95-79. The 6-foot-5 guard, in his first season with Calgary after transferring from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, tallied 42 points and six rebounds last Friday and added 30 points (on 13-of-19 shooting), six boards, three assists and three steals the following night. Cooper, whose 42-point performance was the best single-game total by a Dino in more than two decades, currently leads the Canada West conference in scoring and ranks second in the country with 26.1 points per outing.
