York Lions @ Toronto Varsity Blues
The York University Lions men's volleyball team won a thrilling five-set match against the Toronto Varsity Blues at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym on Friday evening (Jan. 20).
Ray Szeto (Sutton, Ont.) and Gregory Ivan (Toronto) were also stellar for the Lions. Szeto had 16 points on 11 kills, three service aces and two blocks, while Ivan had 14 points on eight kills, five blocks and one service ace. Szeto also chipped in with 11 digs and Ivan had seven.
Setter Marvin Macalino (Ajax, Ont.) tallied 34 assists on the night and added nine digs.
The Lions twice had to come back from a set down in the match, dropping the first and third sets but coming back in both the second and fourth sets to tie the contest each time. They finally put it all together in the fifth, winning 15-12 to earn the two points in the standings.
The win got them back to .500 on the year at 6-6 and expanded their lead over the Varsity Blues. The Lions' 12 points now have them comfortably in seventh place, eight points up on Toronto (2-10).
The Lions will head west next weekend for a pair of road games. They'll be in Windsor, Ont., on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 28) for a game against the Lancers and then will travel to London, Ont., on Sunday to take on the Western Mustangs. Both matches will begin at 3pm.

Queen’s Gaels @ RMC Paladins
KINGSTON, Ont. (January 20, 2012) The Gaels (8-6) drew off their bench during their sweep of the winless RMC Paladins (0-14), giving setter Matthew Bonshor of Surray, B.C. a chance to direct the offense. The Gaels won 25-19, 25-19, 25-18 for the straight sets victory.
First year Mike Tomlinson of St. Pauls, Ont. led the Gaels with a team high nine kills to go along with eight digs and one solo block. He was the main focal point of the Gaels offense throughout the night, along with Mathew Taylor of Toronto who recorded eight kills and six digs.
Kingston native Tyler Leknois led the RMC squad with 10 kills. He was the only player to register double digit kills. However, RMC only recorded 20 kills as a team, meaning Leknois provided half of their total offense. The Gaels also beat RMC in total digs, registering 43 in comparison to RMC's 38.
Jacob Glantz of St. Catherines, Ont. led the Gaels with 9 digs.
The Gaels play next on January 28th at 2 pm against the Ryerson Rams (2-9).

Waterloo Warriors @ McMaster Marauders
Hamilton, Ont. - The McMaster men's volleyball team took down the visting Waterloo Warriors on Friday night. Set scores in the three-set win for the Marauders were 25-18, 25-12, 25-19 in favour of the home team. Setter Austin Campion-Smith (Bowmanville, Ont.) earned the Big Mac Player of the Game honours for his 27 assists.
In the first set of the match, Waterloo would take an early 8-5 lead but McMaster would eventually tie it up at nine with an ace from Jori Mantha (Vanier, Ont.). Tied again at 13, McMaster would take a three point lead going in to the technical timeout thanks to some tough serves from Tyson Alexander (Shanty Bay, Ont.).
The Warriors continued to struggle with Alexander's serve, calling a second timeout at 19-13. The timeout wouldn't help as McMaster dominated at the net for the rest of the set. A big block from middle Alex Elliott (Cobourg, Ont.) would make it 22-15 for McMaster. Two Marauder mistakes would put the Warriors within five but it wouldn't be enough as Jeremy Groenveld (Welland, Ont.) would redeem himself with a big kill from the back row. The Marauders would finish off the set 25-18.
McMaster would take an early lead in the second at 5-1. With both teams utilizing their middles, Waterloo would pull within two. The Warriors would continue to make mistakes throughout the beginning of the second and the Marauders would soon rebuild their four point lead. By the technical timeout, McMaster would double that lead at 16-8.
The Marauders would push through the second set, as the Warriors were unable to stop middles Alexander and Elliott. A kill from Mantha would end the set 25-12 for McMaster.
In the third set, both teams would trade points early on. Waterloo would take an 8-6 lead but McMaster would fight back with some blocks up front from Alexander. Tying the score at nine, the Marauders would then take the lead with two mistakes from Waterloo hitters. The Warriors would tie it back up at 13 but the Marauders would lead going in to the technical timeout with a score of 16-14.
Waterloo would flirt with McMaster's two point lead throughout the second half of the third set, but McMaster would eventually build the lead to five points with a huge block from Mantha on the outside. Waterloo would miss their serve on the final point of the game to close out the match.
Setter Austin Campion-Smith earned the Big Mac Player of the Game honours for his 27 assists. Alexander tallied 13 points with seven kills, four aces and two blocks and Mantha and Elliott both added ten points each in the win. Kevin Stevens (Winnipeg, Man.) shared the team-high eight kills with Elliott.
For the Warriors, the Big Mac Player of the Game was Cameron Wheelan (Barrie, Ont.) with seven kills in the match. Fiodar Kazhamiaka (Waterloo, Ont.) scored a game-high 13 kills and setting Scott Thomson (St. Mary's, Ont.) added 24 assists for the Warriors.

Windsor Lancers @ Western Mustangs
LONDON, Ont. – It was a packed house and loud crowd Friday night for the Western Mustangs’ 3-0 win over the Windsor Lancers (9-5) at Alumni Hall. It was also a big win for Western who experienced their first loss of the season last weekend to the Waterloo Warriors.
Set scores of tonight’s game were 25-20, 26-24 and 25-22.
The Mustangs were only able to get ahead a point or two in the first set before the Lancers would come back and tie the game. This went on for most of the set until the Mustangs pulled ahead late and took the set 25-20. Mathieu Poulin had five kills and three digs for the Mustangs in the set.
It was no different in the second set. The Windsor team not wanting to fall behind by two straight sets, put up some big blocks and attacks. Western countered with offensive play from Mathew Waite and Phil James who capitalized on a defensive error from Windsor’s Ryan Le for the final point and the 26-24 win.
Western came out wanting to quickly take the third set and wrap up the game, but Windsor had a different plan and challenged the purple and white right to the end. Like the first, the set was point-for-point. The Mustangs pulled ahead on an ace from Derek Kuiack and took the third and final set 25-22.
Poulin finished the night with 15 kills and eight digs and led the Mustangs with 15 total points.
Kyle Williamson (14 kills, 3 digs) and Harrison Oake (12 kills, 4 digs, 1 solo block) each had 14 points for the Lancers.
The Mustangs will host McMaster on Saturday, Jan. 28 and York on Sunday, Jan. 28. Both games are at 3 p.m.

Waterloo Warriors @ Ryerson Rams
Rookie outside Zachary Doherty (Goderich) had a team-high eight kills, while Jordan Dyck (St. Catharines) picked up nine points, and the Waterloo Warriors claimed a 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-16, 23-25) victory over the Ryerson Rams men's volleyball team at Kerr Hall Gym on Saturday afternoon.
The Rams (2-10) are tied for second-last in the OUA with Toronto, while the Warriors (8-7) move closer to a playoff berth with the win, currently sitting in sixth place.
Luka Milosevic (Toronto) recorded a game-high 17 kills and Alex Dawson added 14 for the Rams.
Cameron Wheelan (Barrie) picked up an early kill while James Evans (Rockwood/Warriors) tallied an ace, and the Warriors took a commanding 8-2 lead in the opening set. Roman Kabanov (Toronto) had his dig find the backcourt as the Rams attempted to get back in the set, but two more points from the Warriors maintained the healthy advantage.
Stefan Ristic (Belgrade, Serbia) hit back-to-back kills, and the Rams pulled a bit closer to Waterloo, down 16-12 at the technical. However, three straight errors coming out of the break helped the Warriors break away. James Evans (Rockwood/Warriors) and Tyler Motherwell (Scarborough/Warriors) each tallied a kill late in the set, and Dawson put his serve into the net to give Waterloo a 1-0 match lead.
Kills by Ristic and Dawson (Scarborough, Ont.) gave the hosts an early 7-4 lead in the second, but Waterloo responded to notch the set at 9-9. An ace by Kabanov put Ryerson up by two once again. Back-to-back blocks from the Rams put them up 16-12 at the technical timeout. Milosevic tallied back-to-back kills, and an error from the Warriors extended the lead to five for Ryerson.
London, Ont. native Marc Reardon's kill from the middle gave the men a set-point, and they made good as Milosevic found the open court to even the match at 1-1. This broke a streak of 12 straight set losses for the men over the course of four matches.
Ristic opened the third with an ace, but the Warriors streak for five straight points soon after, leading Porosa to call a timeout. The Rams fought back through the middle portion of the set, coming within one of Waterloo at 12-11.
Two blocks in a row from Doherty restored a four-point Warriors lead at the technical. Some miscommunication by the Rams led to another point for Waterloo, and Porosa took a timeout to regroup the men down 18-13.
However, Doherty had an ace right after the timeout to continue increasing the lead, and the Warriors would not look back, taking the third set over Ryerson and a 2-1 lead in the contest.
The squads traded leads in the early going of the fourth set, with the hosts grabbing two straight points to go up 12-10 when Waterloo called its first timeout. Kabanov tallied a kill, and Ryerson spread the lead to four going into the technical break.
The men held the advantage as the teams exchanged points over the next few plays. However, a block from Wheelan pulled the Warriors to within one, and they evened the set at 21-21. Wheelan grazed the line with a kill, and Waterloo pulled in front, erasing a once five-point deficit.
The momentum swung away from the Rams, as Kabanov was blocked to spread the lead to two. However, the men came back to even the game at 23-23.
Wheelan touched the ball over the Rams blockers on the next point, and Dyck stymied an attempted kill to clinch the set and the match for Waterloo.
The men return home to the PAC for three straight home games to close out their regular season with hopes of winning two of three to push for a post-season berth. Waterloo is 4-2 at home this season.

Guelph Gryphons @ McMaster Marauders
Hamilton, Ont. - The McMaster men's volleyball team continue to dominate in the OUA as they took down the Guelph Gryphons in four on Saturday night at Burridge Gymnasium. Big Mac Player of the Game for McMaster was Jeremy Groenveld.
In the first set of the match, the Marauders and Gryphons would both come out fighting hard for the first lead of the match. It would be McMaster that would earn a three point lead at 10-7 thanks to some serves from middle Tyson Alexander. By the technical timeout, the Marauders would increase their lead to four at 16-12. With digs from libero Sean Lowe and Jeremy Groenveld in the back court, McMaster would seal the deal in the first set 25-17.
The Marauders wouldn't slow down in the second set, as outside hitters Jori Mantha and Kevin Stevens would keep the Gryphons guessing all the way until the end. Taking a lead early on, McMaster would hold on to it through to the technical timeout at 16-12. With Guelph needing a few points to stay alive in the set, the Marauders wouldn't allow it, scoring two more before Guelph was forced to call a timeout. It wouldn't help as a variety of blockers helped take McMaster to the end as they won their second set of the match.
McMaster would once again regain the lead with a huge block from Alexander and a Gryphon on the net would put the Marauders back up by two at 18-16. The lead would change again as the Gryphons would string together a few points from their outside hitters to take a three point lead at 22-19. A hit from Alex Elliott and a block from the middle following that would get McMaster the ball back at 22-21. Down 24-23, the Marauders would miss their serve on the 25th point to give Guelph the third set win.
With the Marauders up 4-0 in the beginning of the fourth set, Guelph called an early timeout and rallied to come within one. Fortunately for McMaster, the Gryphons would be unable to stop the connection between setter Austin Smith and Alexander in the middle and the Marauders would continue to utilize him, going up again 9-5. The Marauders would maintain their four point lead going in to the technical timeout with a score of 16-12. Guelph would call a timeout after a big block from Elliott to give the Marauders a five point lead at 18-13. Daniel Groenveld would come off the bench for McMaster and help the Marauders take down the Gryphons late in the fourth. Up 22-18, McMaster would finish off the set with some smart play by Stevens and some serves from Groenveld. The Marauders would win the fourth 25-18.

Guelph Gryphons @ Ryerson Rams
TORONTO- Winston Rosser recorded a game-high 11 kills, and Drew Whitaker added nine to lift the Guelph Gryphons over the Ryerson Rams men's volleyball team in straight sets (25-17, 25-21, 25-17).
Luka Milosevic recorded seven kills to lead the Rams (2-11), who are ninth in the conference. The Gryphons (9-5) move up to sixth place in the league.
However, Rosser was on early for the Gryphons, picking up four kills and an ace to give his team a 16-13 lead at the technical. The visitors dominated the second part of the set, ending the first with a 6-1 streak to take a 1-0 match lead.
Milosevic (Toronto) and Brandon Jordan (Londont, Ont.) each picked up an ace in the second, putting Ryerson up 7-3. Guelph looked out of sorts, and the Rams took advantage, extending the lead to six on a block from Aleksa Miladinovic (Belgrade, Serbia).
Guelph cut the difference in half on two-straight attack errors from Ryerson, and after a kill from Rosser made the score 11-9, the Rams called a timeout to try and halt the Gryphons tide. Marc Reardon (London) brought an end to the streak with a kill, but Guelph came back with two more points to even the game at 12-12.
Rosser put the Gryphons ahead with an ace, and they sailed into the technical on an 11-2 run with a 16-13 lead. Ryerson fought back to pull within a point after kills from Toronto natives George Sakvarelidze and Kyle Konietzny.
However, they could not make up the deficit, and Guelph took a stranglehold on the contest on a kill from Mark Wilson.
Ryerson committed three errors in a row to give Guelph a five-point advantage after staying with the Gryphons early on. The visitors took a 16-11 lead into the technical break. The Rams got some life after a lob from Miladinovic on his own backcourt found some space in Guelph's side. He followed that up with an ace to pull his team within three, and a net error from Guelph made the score 18-16.
However, Guelph responded on kills from Drew Whitaker and Greg Houston to retain a four-point spread. Mark Wilson came up with a block, and back-to-back aces from Houston sealed the win for the Gryphons.
The Rams conclude their home games next weekend, playing host to the Queen's Gaels and RMC Paladins before hitting the road for three contests to round out their conference schedule.
