Western Mustangs – Excalibur Classic:
TORONTO, Ont. – Undefeated in regular season play so far this year, the Western Mustangs men’s volleyball team claimed their second consecutive York Excalibur Volleyball Classic title at York University on Dec. 30.
In pool play, the Mustangs swept the Guelph Gryphons and Sherbrooke Vert et Or 3-0 on Dec. 28, and host York Lions 3-0 on Dec. 29 to land a spot in the semi-final.
The semi-final game against the Toronto Ruffriders, a senior men’s volleyball team, resulted in another 3-0 win for the Mustangs.
Paired up against the Waterloo Warriors for the final, the Mustangs took the match 3-1 and the championship title, their second in as many years.
Garrett May won tournament MVP and Mathew Waite was named to the All-Star team.
Regular season games for the Mustangs will continue on Fri. Jan. 6 at Alumni Hall against Ryerson and Sat. Jan. 7 against the visiting Toronto Varsity Blues. Both games are at 8 p.m.
December 30, 2011 – The York University Men’s Volleyball team won the bronze medal at the 33rd Annual Excalibur Volleyball Classic. The finish was the team’s best finish in a decade. The Western Mustangs took home the gold medal, beating the Waterloo Warriors in the championship final.
The Lions began tournament play with a victory over Sherbrooke, winning the match three sets to zero (25-22, 25-17, 25-16). The Lions beat the Guelph Gryphons, 3 – 1 (25-22, 21-25, 25-12, 25-17) in their second game, but fell to the eventual champions, Western, 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-14) to finish group play.
In the championship semi-finals, the Lions went the distance with Waterloo, ultimately losing in a thrilling five set match, 3-2 (25-19, 26-24, 15-25, 23-25, 15-12). The Lions were able to capture the bronze medal against the Toronto RuffRiders with another five set victory, 3-2 (14-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-21, 15-10).
Garret May of Western was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament; while Greg Ivan and Ray Szeto represented York on the tournament’s All-Star Team.
Special thanks to the Pakmen U17 volleyball team, who served as volunteers for the tournament all week and ensured that the event was a success.
The Lions are back in action on Saturday, January 14 against Royal Military College.
